INVENTOR Patented Jan. 30, 1934 PATENT. OFFICE srnmc WIRE COLLAR SNUBBER William 0. Dailey, Portland, Oreg Application May 31, 1929. Serial No. 367,507
Claims. 01. 2-132) This invention is primarily intended to be worn upon shirts and other apparel. having'soft collars, or unstarched collars.
The invention consists of a one piece element 5 made from spring material that is adapted for being worn in a manner to engage the underside of each of the collar ends and to engage the points of the collar and maintain the same in normal position and alignment. The central portion of the one piece element rests substantially horizontal when in normal wear, and a leg downwardly extends from the ends of the horizontal portion with a pointed end adapted for engagement with the underside of the collar Point and to maintain the same in a taut condition and in normal position and alignment. Offsets are placed near the end of the horizontal portion of the body element with upturned bends being placed at opposite sides of the body elements. The purpose of the upturned loops is to engage upon and rest upon the neck tie of the wearer and to maintain the tie in precise placement and position. A return bend is placed at the end of the bottom of each leg, with a point terminating the leg. The purpose of the return bend is to limit the distance that the point may penetrate the collar and to facilitate a compression being developed with the leg portion of the device, to thereby develop'a tension with the end and point portion of the collar. To facilitate the placement of the device, and to develop a tension within the collar end and point, I place a fold or loop within each of the leg elements at a-point that may be easily grasped by the user. A loop may beplaced central of the mid section of the body element to locate the central portion relative to the collar, or upthroughout the several views.
per shirt button.
The primary purpose of my device is to maintain the ends and points of soft collars in placement and in position.
A further object of my invention is to maintain the neck tie in position and in full raised position and to prevent the same dropping down and below the collar, or upper shirt button.
A still further object of my invention consists in providing a device, through the use of which, soft collars may be worn-much longer than now maintains, and that will maintain the collar in a high state of respectability and in fine appearance.
A still further object of my invention consists in providing a device that may be worn,
- without its appearance being known, and without the same showing.
A still further object of my invention consists in providing a device made from spring material adapted for being used in conjunction with a soft shirt collar and necktie, and which has points adapted to engage the points of the collar, and for exerting an upward pressure upon the underside of the tie and for maintaining the tie in raised position and simultaneously maintain the collar points stressed and the intermediate ends of the collar under tension. The terminal ends of the device are adapted for being manually engaged to the points of the collar at the desired position to vary the tension and stress applied to the collar and tie.
With these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in the appended claims, and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter shown in reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification.
In the. drawing- Fig. 1 is a front view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, front view, of a modified form of the upper side-of the body element.
Fig. 4 is still a further modified form of the upper side of the body element.
Fig. 5 is a still and further modified form of the upper side of the body element. 1
Fig. 6 illustrates one of my new and improved devices in place upon the wearer and illustrates the device in place and position relative to the shirt and collar of the user.
Like reference characters refer tolike parts I preferably make my device of round'sprlng material, but I do not wish to be limited in the construction of the same from round materials, as equally satisfactory results may be obtained through the use of other materials. I preferably construct the same from piano wire, or from other high grade materials and supply the same 0 from polished metal, or I plate the same, depending upon the character of trade to which the same are to be supplied.
I have found best results are to be obtained when I form the body element of a single piece of material. The central portion 3 of which may be formed curved from the horizontal and inclined rearward at either end as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. A loop may be formed central of the body element as illustrated at 3A to adapt the same to the collar, or shirt button and to maintain the same fixedly positioned relative to the button when the same is to engage the button.
The central portion 3 made as illustrated in Fig. 4 forms a straight line. The central portion made as illustrated in Fig. 5 is curved a still greater amount to adapt the central portion of the body element to the contour of the body of the wearer and at the same time to fall below the collar, or shirt button and to thereby maintain the body element substantially in placement and in position.
Upturned bends 2 are disposed at either end of the central portion of the body element. The purpose and object of the upturned bends is to make the same engage upon the outside of the neck tie and to thereby maintain the tie in a raised position and in placement. Legs 4 downwardly extend at either side of the body element. A loop, or curl, is placed within each of the legs to facilitate the firm grasping of the legs, by the user, and to facilitate the positioning of the device in placement upon the shirt and collar. The loop 1 is placed substantially in spaced relation with the point 7 and the loop 6 to provide a leg portion 5 of substantial length. The point 'I is disposed upon the outside of the leg and loop 6 in order that the, same may be made to engage the underside of the point of the collar. The pointed end of the loop is made relatively short in order that. the point will not pass through the material forming the point of the collar.
.. While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted for fulfilling the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment'herein shown and described, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What I claim is-- 1. A device for supporting soft collars comprising two forwardly extending needle points adapted to penetrate the under side of the collar, said points terminating in half circle involuted loops,
and which are adapted to limit the penetration of the points into the collar, legs upwardly extending from said loops, inverted U -shaped bends terminating each of the legs, a central portion forwardly extending from said bends, and a hand engaging loop disposed upon each leg for facilitating the manipulation of the device.
' 2. A device for supporting soft collars comprising two extending needle points adapted to penetrate the under side of the collar, means for limiting the amount of penetration of the needle points within the collar fabric, legs upwardly extending from said means, inverted U-shaped bends terminating each of the legs, a central portion forwardly extending from said bends, and a hand engaging loop disposed upon each leg for facilitating the manipulation of the device.
3. A new article of manufacture comprising 9.
ly extending from said loops, a pair of loops disposed upon the legs adapted for assisting manipulation of .the assembly, inverted U-shaped bends terminating the legs, adapted for placement on the outer tie portion, and a central portion forwardly extending from the bends and adapted to tension the bends when placed upon the collar.

5. A soft collar supporter made up of a single length of wire formed to provide a central portion to underlie the knot of the tie used with the collar, the wire length at the respective ends of the central portion being deflected abruptly upwardly at a substantially right angle to the plane of the central portion, then formed in a return bend and projected in the opposite direction materially beyond the central portion to provide legs, the terminals of the legs being formed as sharpened points and the legs immediately adjacent said terminals being shaped to limitthe penetration of the pointed ends, the plane of the central portion being in its main length substantially in advance of the plane of the legs when considered in the position of use, that por-' tion of the device arranged above the central portion in a position of use serving to bear on the tie sections immediately beyond the knot under a pressure incident to the weight of the knot on the central portion, the length of the legs permitting the sharpened terminals thereof to engage the collar adjacent the free points of the outer band and hold such outer band in a substantially' predetermined, normally smooth, fitting position.
