The present invention relates to removing and replacing doors on coke ovens.
In previous devices of this kind, the doors of coking ovens are placed in a very inconvenient j 5 position when removed from the oven so that it is quite inconvenient to clean the same of old luting or the like when so removed. Also, previous door moving devices have the disadvantage of being in the way of other devices also operating on or in l0 the same coking ovens such as coal leveling, coke pushing, and coke discharging so that it is necessary to move the heavy machinery which usually supports such devices to spot the machine correctly so that these other devices can also operl l5 ate correctly on or in the same coking oven. This is a decided disadvantage in loss or" power required for such moving of the machine and in loss of time for the movements and in correctly locating the machine opposite a coking oven which is a rather 2.0 dicult operation due to the size and weight of the machine and the usual inability of an operator thereof to see clearly where or which way to go due to the usual long distance between the operators position and the oven door. '2.5 The present invention aims to eliminate or remove all of these disadvantages andl to provide a device which removes and replaces the doors of coking ovens and at the same time permits all of the operations on and in a coking oven and the doors thereof to be performed while the machine remains in one position opposite the same coking oven door.
The object then of the present invention is to provide a machine which 1) can be moved into a position opposite a coking oven door, (2) which can perform coal leveling and coke pushing and oven door moving operations while the machine remains in one position, (3) which moves the 49 door to one side and as far as possible away from the oven for such purposes as removal of old luting material, (4) in which this sidewise moving of the door is preferably performed automatically during the removal and replacing of the door, and (5) in which the door can be locked, preferably automatically, in any desired position.
These objects, as well as others which are or will become apparent in this specification and in usual interpretations thereof, are attained by the mechanism illustratively shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication and in which:

The machine is a complete single machine and comprises the framing A suitably trussed for required strength and rigidity and lightness Yof weight to require as little power as possible to #'19 move the same.
The framing is mounted on the axles .A1 and the track wheels A2 thereon running on the rails or tracks A3 which extend transversely of and in I front of coke ovens. The coke pusher B is mounted in the framing to move longitudinally therein substantially at right angles to the tracks A3.
The coal leveler E is also mounted in the framing to move longitudinally therein substantially parallel with the coke pusher andv is located ver- 85 t'ically of the pusher so that the leveler and the pusher can operate in the same coking oven without moving the machine from its positionopposite the oven.- 1
The coke pusher B is moved longitudinally by 99 the gear Bl engaging a rack on the pusher. The gear B1 is operated by the motor B2 in the cab through the chain B3 and the sprocket B4. 1
The leveler E is moved longitudinally by the gear El operated by the chain E2, the latter being 95 operated by the motor B2 in the cab.
The ram-like member 10 is guided in the framing to move longitudinally in a definite path'substantially parallel with the path of pusher and leveler and may be so moved by any suitable .190 means as illustratively shown and described below for instance, is spaced horizontally sidewise of the pusher, and has the two vertically spaced bosses 11 on the front end thereof and the brackets 12 and 13 on the top thereof near the y105 front end.'

The head 18 has the lugs 19 and 20 extending over the outside of the corresponding bosses 11 and is vertically supported thereon. The shaft 17 is keyed onto the lugs so that rotation of the shaft 17 swivels the head 18 according to rotation of the shaft 17 caused by rotation of the shaft 14.
The shaft rotating `member 21 is secured to the shaft -14 to rotate therewith and vis located forwardly adjacent to the bracket 13. The rotatable roller 22 is journaled on the outer end of the member 21. y
The guide 23 is channel-shaped cross-sectionally and is rigidly secured to the framing. The front portion of the guide is parallel with the path of travel of the ram 1G and the rearportion is twisted and slopes downwardly; the twist being concentric with the axis of the shaft 14 so that the roller is guided in between the side parts oi the guide 23 and `thereby vrotates the shaitla onefourth of a revolution through an angle of 90 degrees when the ram. 10 is moved backwards yfrom .the door gripping .position shown and thereby swivels the head 18 to a position of 9G degrees fromfthe position shown in full lines.
The front bottom end of the head -18 has the bracket 24'thereon with the pivot pin 25 mounted therein. TIF-he .housing C is ymounted on the front top `end of the head 18 and carries the pivot pin 29. The A`doorengaging arm 30 ispivoted in this pivot pin and ,has the v,doorfengaging toe 31 similar to the toe 27 and for the same purpose.

The door operating motor 40 is mounted on top of the housing and rotates the shaft 41 and the "bevel gear 42 thereon which meshes with and rotates ythe bevel gear 43 and the shaft la thereon. The worm 45 is on the shaft 44 and in lmesh with the teeth 46 on the `upper door engaging arm 30 so that rotation of the motor will .engage `the toes on the door for movement of When desired, or if found convenient theldoorslightly to primarily break the luting or sealing lso that the door can be moved more easily horizontally. This motor can also be used and yin fact finds .good use in raising and lowering the door after it is moved away from the :oven or toone side thereof for cleaning of the door or vother useful purposes.
'This door engaging means has the very decided .advantage of .being able to take hold of doors located at diiferent heights from the floor.
The bracket 47 is secured to the front bottom of the ram and carries the pivot pin 48. The latch 19 is pivoted onto the pin 48 and has the nose 50 which engages a notch in the part 51 of the head to hold the head in a door opening position. Similar notches can be provided in the head to hold the same in any other position in relation'to the ram, for instance in any of the positions'shown in dotted lines in the drawings. The iinal position is shown as being substantially at right angles to the axis of the ram although this angular relation can be varied.
The shelf 53 is secured to the framing and has the iioor or cam-like surface 54. thereof a deiinite distance below the bottom of the ram.
The latch 49 is Yof bell crank formation and Vhas the arm 55 with the roller 56 journaled on the outer end thereof. This arm is of suicient length so that the same hangs almost perpendicular and by its weight automatically moves the nose into the-notch and so that the roller 56 extends a sufficient distance below the level of the floor 54 when the head is in door engaging relation to the ram and the noseis in the notch.Y
When the ram and head move backward or away from an oven, the nose remains in the notch until the roller contacts the inclined part 57 of the floor 5a whereupon it will ride up on the incline and thereby pivots the latch on its axis and moves the nose out of the notch and releases the head for swiveling thereof. The inclined part 57 is so located that the roller 56 rolls on the level part of the floor 54 and the nose is out of the notch beiore the above-described guide `23 starts to swivel the head.
Upon movement of the ram and head toward the oven, the above operation is reversed and the roller 56 rides on the floor 54 and the guide 23 swivels the head into door engaging position during the first part of the movement and, when the roller 56 reaches and passes the inclined part 57, the roller automatically drops down due to gravity and thereby moves the nose into the notch and holds the head in a relation to the ram to take hold of a door on an oven orto replace a door on an oven.
The rotatable shaft 58 has the pinion 59 meshing into the gear 60 on the shaft 6l. The pinion 62 (Fig. 5) is keyed onto the shaft 61 and meshes with the rack 63 on the bottom of the ram to move the ram toward and away from an oven according to the direction of rotation of the shaft.
lThe rollers 64 are journaled on the shafts 65 which extend into the brackets 66 supported on the framing. The rollers contact the rack 63 radially to support the ram and head vertically and have the radial flanges 67 extending into suitably formed grooves or depressions 68 to guide the ram and head sidewise.
The flanged rollers 69 are each journaled in the brackets 7G and the circular faces thereof contact the plate 7l on the ram for vertical confinement oi the ram and the flanges thereof contact the corresponding edges of the plate 71 for sidewise guiding the ram.
The operators cab 72 may be located at any convenient place on the framing and may have control means therein as, for instance, the control switch 73 for the motor e0.
No chassis structure, wheeled or otherwise, is
shown in the drawings since it appears obvious that any kind of chassis can be used to bring or move the framing and mechanism thereon VME into a position opposite any one of a number of coking ovens.
The drawings show one framing carrying the pusher ram, the leveler ram, and the door operating mechanism.
It is quite obvious that the framing can be divided so that the pusher and leveler are on one framing and the door operating or extracting device is on another framing or a coke guiding or receiving means on one framing and the door operating means on another fra-ming. Each of the framings may have wheels thereon so that each can move as a unit independent of the other. In such cases I prefer to use a coupling means between the two units so that the two units will always be brought together at a definite distance from each other to locate the rams in correct co-operation with each other.
This structure is not shown in the drawings Abut appears to be quite obvious and within mechanical skill. Such devices as a railway car coupling, very well known, can be used for purposes such as this.
Itis to be noted that the coke pusher and the coal leveler are vertically of each other and that the ram for the door operating device or head is at one side of the pusher and leveler; that the door extracting head is on the end of its ram and extends angularly therefrom and terminates in front of the -pusher and leveler when the door 'operating head is in position to engage the door and that the head can swivel on a pivot so that the samel can be moved out of the way of the pusher and the leveler when the latter are to be used.
The predominating object of this structure and arrangement is to remove and to replace the door on the same oven without moving the machine. The door operating head is automatically moved out of the way during the removal of the door to allow the pusher and leveler to enter and operate in the same oven without moving the machine itself and is automatically moved into position to replace the door in correct position during the door replacing movement of the head without moving the machine itself.
In operation:
The machine shown and described is moved into such a position opposite a coking oven that the coke pusher and the coal leveler and the door operating head can each operate in the same coking oven while Vthe machine remains in one position.
The door operating ram is located at one side of the pusher ram and is operated for movement thereof toward and away from the oven door by means of the shaft 58.
The door extracting head extends angularly from its ram to in front of the oven door when it is locked against lateral movement.
When the door-operating ram and head moves toward the oven and reaches the oven door, the door engaging toes come under the brackets on the door. Whereupon the motor 40 is started to engage the toes with the brackets.
The shaft 58 is then rotated to move the head with the door thereon away from the oven. The guide 23 and the latch 49 retain Athe angular relation between the head and the ram thereof during the first part of this movement and, during further movement, in the same direction, the roller 56 rides onto the shelf 53 and releases the latch 49 from the head and, immediately thereafter, the guide 23 and associated mechanism swivels the head on the pivot shaft 17 and there- 'remains in one position; said door operating deby moves the door thereon sidewise and away' from the front of the coke pusher and thereby clears the way for the pusher and leveler to operate in the same oven.
When the operation of theshaft 58 is reversed, the above operations are reversed and the oven door is replaced on the oven while the machine remains in one position for coal leveling and coke pushing and replacing the oven door.
Changes and modifications can be made in the structure and arrangements of elements shown and described within the spirit and intent of the present invention and of the appended claims; therefore, without limiting myself to the precise structure and arrangements of the parts as shown and described.
I claim:
l. A machine for coking ovens comprising a ram movable longitudinally, an oven door operating means pivotally mounted on said ram to swivel the door horizontally relative to said ram and comprising a member stationary on the machine and having a spirally extending groove therein, a roller on and movable with said ram and engaging said groove to swivel the door upon a longitudinal movement of said ram, a door engaging means carried by said door operating means and individually operable to engage and to release the door.
2. A machine for coking ovens including a sidewise movable head, oven door engaging members pivoted on said head, a motor on and movable with said head, a worm on said head and operated by said motor, a gear sector on one of said members and in mesh with said worm, a connecting 1\ 10 rod between said one member and another door engaging member, and an adjusting means for said connecting rod to adjust the length thereof and thereby adjust said members to differently spaced engageable parts of oven doors.
3. A machine for coking ovens including a pivotally mounted oven door engaging head, latch means to normally retain said head against pivotal movement thereof, guide means to swivel said head to move the door sidewise away from the oven, and means torelease said latch means to release said door for swiveling thereof by said guide means.
4. A machine for coking ovens including a pivotally mounted oven door engaging head, means to move said head toward and away from an oven, guide means to swivel said head out of the way of other operable parts of the-machine during its movement away from the oven and to swivel the door back to its original position during its movement toward the oven and a locking means normally holding said head against swivelling and released by movement of said head for swivelling of said head by said guide means'.
5. A machine for coking ovens including a movable coke pusher and movable coal leveler and a movable oven door operating device, all operable in the same oven while the machine vice including a movable head, means for normally locking said head automatically, a guided means to move said head sidewise during operation of said door operating device and means to release the locking of said head just before said head starts to move sidewise.
6. A machine for coking ovens including a movable coke pusher and movable coal leveler and a movable oven door operating device, all operable in the same oven while the machine releu feo Vse
mains in one position; said door operating device-including a longitudinally movable ram, a head movable sidewise on said ram, a guide to move said headsidewise during operation of said door operating device, and a latching means to retain said head against sidewise movement While said door operating device is idle.
7. A machine for coking ovens including a movable coke pusher and movable coal leveler and a movable oven door operating device, all operable in the same oven while the machine remains in one position; said operating device including a movable head and a latching means tor retain said head against movement while said door operating means is idle. e
8. A machine for coking ovens including a movable coke pusher and movable coal leveler and a movable oven door operating device, al1 operable in the same oven while the machine remains in one position; said operating device including a sidewise movable head, a latching means to retain said head against sidewise movement while said door means is being removed from and replaced on the oven, and a guide means to operate said latching means by and during movement of said door operating device.
9. A machine for coking ovens including a movable coke pusher and movable coal leveler and a movable oven door operating device, all operable in the same oven while the machine remains in one position; said door operating device including a sidewise movable head and latching means operated by movement or" said door operating device to automatically retain said head against sidewise movement at the end of movement of said door operating means and to automatically release said latching means at the beginning of movement of said door operating means.
10. A machine for coking ovens including a movable coke pusher and movable coal leveler and a movable oven door operating device, all operable in the same oven while the machine remains in one position; said door operating device including a ram and a sidewise movable head thereon, a latching member on said ram and adapted to releasa ,lyA engage a notch in said head to retain said head in a deiinite position in relation to said ram, and a shelf to operate said latching member to release the same from said notch at the beginning of movement of said door operating device and to release the same for engagement with said notch for latching of said door on said ram at the end of movement of said door operating device.
11. A machine for coking ovens including a movable coke pusher and movable coal leveler and a movable oven door operating device, all
` operable in the same oven while the machine remains in one position; said door operating device including a movable oven door engaging head; a guide to automatically move said head during operation of said door operating device, and a latch mechanism to automatically latch and release said head during operation of said door operating device.
l2. A machine for coking ovens includ-ingy a coal leveler, a coke pusher vertically below said coal leveler, an oven door operating device having a ram spaced sidewise from said leveler and pusher, a door engaging head movable on said ram and normally extending from said ram to in iront of the ends of said leveler and pusher, guide means to move said head away from the iront of said leveler and said pusher during operation of said door operating device and a latch means to normally retain said head against movement on said ram and automatically released when said head starts movement on said ram.
13. A machine for coking ovens including a coal leveler, a coke pusher vertically below said coal leveler, an oven door operating device having a ram spaced sidewise from said leveler and said pusher, a movable door engaging head on lsaid ram and normally extending from said ram to in iront of the ends of said leveler and pusher, a latch mechanism adapted to retain said head against movement when the same is in front of said leveler and pusher, means to move said head away from the iront of said leveler and pusher, and means to release said latch mechanism before said head is moved away from the front of said leveler and pusher.

A machine for coking ovens including leveler and pusher means and a movable oven door operating device; a part of said door operating device being individually movable andnormally in front of at least one of said means; a latch means to normally retain said part against individual movement, and mechanism to automatically release said latch means and move said part of the door operating device away from the front of said means and operated by and during a door removing movement of said door operating device.
l5. A machine for coking ovens including leveler and pusher means and a movable oven door operating device; a part of said door operating device being movable and Vnormally in front of at least one or" said means, latch mechanism to automatically releasably retain said part in that position and operated by and during movement of said door operating device, and means to move said door operating device.
16. A machine for coking ovens including leveler and pusher means and a movable oven door operating device; a part of said door operating device being movable and normally in front of at least one of said means, latch mechanism to automatically releasably retain said part in that position and operated by and during movement of said door operating device means to release said latch mechanism operated by and during movement of said door operating device, mechanism to automatically move said part away from the front of said means and operated by and during movement of said door operating device, and means to move said door operating device.
