9 Claims. (Cl. 200-90) This invention relates to mechanical interrupter units for electrical circuits and, more particularly, to such devices of the magnetic type adapted to readily make and break electrical circuits, such as that of a potential changer.
A general object of the invention is the provision of such a device preferably of the double .001! type which is quiet, steady and emcient inoperation, is simple in construction and can be readily duplicated in commercial production.
More specific objects of the invention are the provision in such adevice of a U-shaped armature support which will allow compactness in form with the attainment of relatively great lengths in the armature structure or vibratory member; the provision of a rocker type anchor age-for the armature support on the base of the magnetic interrupter to permit adjustment of the contact pressureand to compensate for variationsin the shape of the U-shaped armature support; the provision of an auxiliary reed on which is mounted one cicruit contact point and carried by the armature support spaced from the armature with the use of adjustable means to control the amplitude of vibration of the auxiliaryreed; and the provision of a simple adjustable support mounted on the base member of the magnetic interrupter to carry the second circuit contact point, the structure of the interrupter insuring a substantially constant frequency and steady operation.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
- 'he invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the applicationof which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing, the mechanical interrupter of the present invention consists of a magnetic interrupter having a base member 10 of sheet metal, preferably of magnetic permeable material such as iron. One end of the base member 10 is bent at right angles to provide a support 11 and the other end of the base member 10 is provided with a pair of bolts 12-12 between which is positioned the crowned member or'rocker 13 preferably a laterally elongated and crowned boss struck up from the sheet metal of the base member 10. Twomagnetic coil cores 14-14 of magnetic permeable material are .preferablymounted on the base 10 and two ma netic 'coils 15-15 are mounted on the cores 14-14. Although it is possible to use one magnetic coil in the structure of the present device two such coils 15-15 connected in series are preferred.
A U-shaped armature support 16 having an elongated portion 1'7 extending toward the coils 15-15 isgmounted on the base member 10 by bolts 12-12. A pair of strap members 18-18 rial is mounted upon the end 17 of the support 16. An auxiliary, reed 21 of resilient metallic material having good electrical conductivity is also mounted upon the end 17 of the support 16 and spaced from the armature 20 as shown.
A nut 22 is secured to the armature 20 and receives the end of'a headed bolt 23 extendin through an aperture in the auxiliary reed, 21. The bolt 23 will thus allow control of the dimension of the space between the armature 20 and the auxiliary reed 2l'so that the amplitude of vibration of the auxiliary reed 21 may be adjusted. A circuit contact point 24 is mounted upon the end of the auxiliary reed 21.
An insulating member 25 is mounted upon the right angle support 11 and a circuit contact point support arm 26 is adjustably secured thereto, preferably by a bolt 27, the adjustment being allowed by a slot 28 in the arm 26. The arm 26 carries a cooperating circuit contact point 29.
It is to be understood that in accordance with the present invention the. armature 20 may be made integral with, the U-shaped support 16 and the auxiliary reed secured thereto, or the auxiliary reed 21 may be made integral with the U-shaped support 16 and the armature 20 secured thereto.

ally to serve as a spacing member. It is likewise possible to use structure other than the nut 22 and the bolt 23 for governing the space between the armature 20 and the auxiliary reed 21, the structure shown being preferred, however, because of its simplicity and due to the fact that adjustment of the amplitude may be obtained thereby.
It will thus be seen that the device of the present invention efliciently attains the objects set forth above and in addition provides a magnetic interrupter which is efficient and steady in operation characterized by a substantially constant frequency of vibration desirable in potential changers of the type depicted in the copending application of William P. Lear, Marvin E. Nulsen and Raymond S. Yoder, Serial No. 835,056, filed September 27, and assigned to the same assignee.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be-made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents, is:
1. A magnetic interrupter comprising a relatively flat metallic base member, at least one magnetic coil core mounted on the face of said base member, a magnetic coil mounted on said core, a U-shaped armature support spring mounted on one end of said base member and having an elongated arm extending toward and substantially parallel with the face of said core, an armature mounted on said support arm and spaced from said core, an auxiliary reed mounted on said support spring in spaced relation to said armature to be moved therewith when said support spring is iiexed by movement of said armature, a fixed contact point, another contact point mounted on said auxiliary reed for cooperation with said fixed contact point, adjustable means between said armature and said auxiliary reed to control the dimensions of the space therebetween while allowing relative movement between said armature and said auxiliary reed when the latter is stopped by said fixed contact point while both are being carried outwardly by recovery action of said support spring.
2. A magnetic interrupter comprising a relatively flat metallic base member, at least one magnetic coil core mounted on the face of said base member, a magnetic coil mounted on said core, a U-shaped spring armature having one end mounted on one end of said base member and an elongated arm extending beyond substantially parallel with and spaced from the face of said core, a shorter auxiliary reed carrying at one end a circuit contact point and mounted at the other end on said armature and spaced from the latter beyond the mounting point of said auxiliary reed, and an adjustable member between said armature and said auxiliary reed located between the ends of said auxiliary reed to control the dimensions of the space between said armature and said auxiliary reed. 1

A magnetic interrupter comprising a relatively fiat base member, a support member mounted on said base member and extending at a substantial right angle to said base member, at least one magnetic coil core mounted on said base member, a magnetic coil mounted on said core, a U-shaped armature support mounted on the end of said base member opposite said right angle support, an armature mounted on said U-shaped support extending adjacent to and spaced from said core, a pair of circuit contacts, an auxiliary reed mounted on said U-shaped support spaced from said armature and carrying one of said circuit contact points, means to govcm the space between said armature and said auxiliary reed, and means to carry the other of said circuit contact points and mounted on said right angle support with said circuit contact points in face engagexr .nt.
4. In a magnetic interrupter the combination comprising an armature member, a base member, and a rocker anchorage between said armature member and said base member.
5. In a magnetic interrupter a base member, a crowned member on said base member, an armature member, and means to secure said armature member on said base member with said crowned member interposed between said armature member and said base member.
6. In a magnetic interrupter the combination comprising a base member, a crowned member mounted on said base member a U-shaped armature member one end of which is disposed adjacent said crowned member, and adjustable means to secure said armature member to said base member with said crowned member interposed therebetween to allow adjustment of said armature member with respect to said base member.
7. In a magnetic interrupter a base member of sheet metal, a crowned boss struck out from said base member, a pair of bolts mounted on said base member on opposite sides of said boss, a U-shaped armature member having one end in contact with said boss and being provided with a pair of bolt holes to receive said bolts, 9. pair of nuts to cooperate with said bolts to secure to said base member said armature member in an adjusted position and in contact with said boss.
8. In a magnetic interrupter the combination comprising a relatively fiat base member having one end turned up at right angles to the main body portion thereof, a U-shaped armature support mounted on the other end of the main bodv portion of said base member, an armature mount ed on said support, an auxiliary reed mounted on said support and spaced from said armature, a circuit contact point mounted on said auxiliary reed, adjustable means between said armature and said auxiliary reed to control the dimensions of the space therebetween, a second circuit contact point in face engagement with said first mentioned circuit contact point and a support for said second mentioned contact point adjustably mounted on said right angle portion of said base member.
9. A magnetic interrupter comprising a base member of sheet metal having a substantially fiat major portion and a right angle portion bent up from one end thereof, a pair of magnetic coil cores mounted on the major portion of said base member, a U--shaped armature support mounted on the end of said base member opposite said right angle portion, a crowned member interposed between said base member and said U- shaped armature support, an armature mounted on said armature support extending adjacent to trically insulated therefrom, a second circuit contact point mounted on said circuit contact point supportand in face engagement with said first mentioned circuit contact point, and means to secure said circuit contact point support to said right angle portion and to allow relative adjustment therebetween.
