To an arm 16 of the lever 16a pin -25 is secured which is engaged by a claw formed at the top end of an arm 18, which arm is connected with the printingmechanism and adapted to be moved upwardly and downwardly upon each printing stroke of the type cylinder 19. The arm 18 is made in two sections 18 and 18 jointed to each other at 182 and adapted to be rocked to bring the claw into and out of engagement with the pin 25, as is shown in Fig. 1 in full and broken lines, a spring 183 normally holding the upper part of the arm 18 in engagement with the pin 25. The link l0 is adapted to be shifted relatively to the slot 9 for varying the range of the opening movement of purpose it is connected by a link 46 with a block 41 slidably mounted in a slot L12l oi a plate i2 secured to the top plate 49. On a pivot bolt e6 rising from the plate 42 a bell crank lever 45 is mounted one arm of which is formed with an enlarged end formed with a cam slot 44 engaged by a pin 4:3 made integral with the block 41. The other arm of the said bell crank lever carries a pin 47 which extends upwardly therefrom and through a slot 48 made in the plate 49. By rocking the bell crank lever l5 by means of the pin 4'?, the block il is shited in a direction for rocking the link 10 relatively to the slot 9, so that the range of the rocking movement imparted to the bell crank lever 8, in response to the vertical movement of arm 13, is increased or reduced, and the range of shift in axial direction of the screw plug 4 is-correspondingly increased or reduced.

The levers 8 and 16 together (in the form shown in Figs. 1-5) and the lever 16 alone (in the form shown in Fig. 6) constitute in the two cases reciprocating mechanism, performing essentially the same organized steps in the operation.
The operation or the inking apparatus is as follows:
By the printing operation the type cylinder 19 is thrown forwardly in Fig. l, and the arm 13 is moved upwardly and downwardly for rocking the screw plug 4- and opening and closing the hole 5' thus allowing a slight amount of ink to be delivered through the said hole. Simultaneously the arm 18 ismoved upwardly and downwardly, and by the upward movement the roller 14 is first movedv across the type of the type cylinder 19 which has been set into printing posit-ion, and thereafter the roller is moved across the surface 20 andthe hole 5', thus taking a slight amount of ink from the said hole and spreading the same on the surface 20. At the beginning of the movement oi the type cylinder 19 towards the platen, the roller 14 is for a slight distance carried along, by reason of the elasticity of the leaf spring l5, until by the swinging of lever 16 the roller passes from engagement with the type cylinder, permitting the same to continue its movement towards the platen. If it is desired to change the shade of the print made by the type cylinder the link 10 is shifted relatively to the slot 9.
If the supply of ink within the casing 1 is exhausted, the said casing is removed from the pillar 22 and sent to the salesman for being refilled in the factory, another casing being in the' mean- 'ing in the wall of the casing time placed on the machine. It will be notedy that, together with the casing 1, the roller-14 and the lever 16 carrying the same are removed and sent to the salesman. I have found that for giving satisfactory results it is desirable that the operator be not able to fill the casing 1 with ink, because it is important that always a high quality ink be used. Further, it is desirable that at the same time the roller 14 be sent to the manufacturer, because the said roller, which ordinarily consists of rubber, wears out after a certain length of time, and it should be replaced by a new roller whenever a new supply of ink is needed.
In the construction so far described the mechanisrn for opening the valve l, 5' is independent of the .lever 16 and the inking roller lll. But I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to this feature, and that in some cases l provide an inking apparatus in which the valve is opened by the lever 16. This modication is shown in Fig. 6, in which the said lever 16 opens the valve through the intermediary of the inking roller le. As shown in the said figure, a ring 31 is hired in a hole made in the wall of the casing l, and the 'said ring is engaged by a valve cone 26, the rounded end 32 of the said valve cone extending outwardly through the hole of the ring 31. The stem 2'7 is embedded in a socket 28 of a screw plug 29 screw- 1 opposite to the ring 31. Between the said wall and a collar 27 of the stern 27 there is a spring 30 which tends to force vthe valve cone 26 outwardly and into position for closing the hole made in the ring 31. By screwing the plug 29 more or less inwardly or outwardly the range through which the valve cone 26 may (by the spring-borne roller 14) be shifted is varied, and thus the amount o ink delivered from the casing l may be varied. Between the head 36 and a nut 33 an' arm 34 is clamped 1 to the plug 29, and the said arm carries a pin 35 adapted to engage in any one of a series of sockets 37, made in the wall of the casing 1, for securing 29 in adjusted position,

While in describing the' invention reference has been made to particular examples embodying the same, I wish it to be understoodthat my invention is not limited to the constructions shown in 13 the drawing, nor to the use of the inking apparatus in typewriting machines, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts,
without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. An inking apparatus, comprisingan ink contype to be inked, a fountain including an ink container and having an orifice through which ink may pass, and a valve in said orifice, reciprocable mechanism adapted with each reciprocation to shift said valve, such mechanism being equipped with a roller which in the range of reciprocation passes successively across such orice and over the face of the type to be inked.
3. In inking apparatus, in combination with type to be inked, a fountain including an ink container, and having an ink-spreadingsurface andan orifice through which ink may pass from the container to the spreading surface, and a valve in such orifice, reciprocable mechainsm adapted with each reciprocation to shift said valve, such mechanism being equipped with a roller. which in the range of reciprocation passes successively over the ink-spreading surface and over the face of the type to be inked. l
4. In inking apparatus, in combination with type t be inked, a fountain including an ink container, and having a orifice through which ink may pass from the container, and a valve in such orifice, reciprocable mechanism, and adjustable connection between such mechanism and the valve, whereby with each reciprocation of the mechanism the' valve may be shifted through a range that is variable operator, the said mechanism being equipped with a roller which in the range of reciprocation passes successively across such orifice and over -the face of the type to be inked.
5. In inking apparatus, in combinationV with a rcciprocable type carrier, a fountain including an ink container, and having an orifice through which ink may pass from the container, and a valve in such orifice, mechanism reciprocable in response to reciprocation of the type carrier and adapted with each reciprocation to shift said valve, the said mechanism being equipped with a roller which in the range of reciprocation passes successively across such orifice and over a type face upon said type carrier.
6. In inking apparatus, in combination. with a reciprocable type carrier, a fountain including an ink container and having an orifice through which ink may pass from the container, and a valve in such orifice, mechanism reciprocable in a plane transverse to that in w ch the type car-A rier reciprocates and adapted with each recipro` cation to' shift said valve, the said mechanism be'- ing equipped with la yieldingly mounted rollerl which in the range of reciprocation passes successively across such orifice and over a type face upon said type carrier.
7. In inking apparatus, in combination with type to be inked, a fountain including an ink container and having anink-spreading surface and an orifice through which ink may pass from the container to the spreading surface, and a valve normally closing such orifice and protruding above the level of such ink-spreading surface, and a reciprocable member equipped with a roller. said valve cone is within the discretion of the ing engagement with roller in the range of member reciprocation passing successively over the ink-spreading surface and the face ofthe type tobe inked and in passing over the inkl-spreading surface making unseating engagement with the so protruding valve.

An inking apparatus, comprising an ink container, a valve controlling the delivery of ink from said container, a screw plug on which the valve cone is mounted, the operating mechanism of a typewriting machine. and mechanism con mechanism for turning said screw plug for opening and closing saidv valve.

An inking apparatus, comprising an ink4 delivery of inkr container, a valve controlling the from said container, a screw plug on`which the mounted, the operating mechanism of a typewriting machine, mechanism controlledy by said operating mechanism for turning said screw plug for opening and closing said valve, and means for adjusting said mechanism for varying the opening movement of said valve.

In inking apparatus, in combination with type to be inked, a fountain including an ink container and having an ink-spreading surface and an orifice through which ink may pass from the container to the spreading surface, and a springbacked valve normally protruding above the level of such ink-spreading surface, and a reciprocable member equipped with a yieldingly mounted roller, said roller in the range of member over the ink-spreading surface making unseatthe so protruding valve. 12. In inking apparatus, in combination with type to be inked, a fountain including an ink container and having an ink-spreading surface and an orice through which ink may pass from the container to the spreading surface, and a spring-backed valve normally closing such oriflce and protruding above the level of such inkspreading surface, adjustable means for limiting the range of valve movement, andk a reciprocable member equipped with a yieldingly mounted roller, said roller` in the range of member reciprocation passing successively over the ink-'spreading surface and over the face of the type to be inked and in passing over the ink-spreading surface making unseating engagement with the so protruding valve.
