Description

c. L. BEHRENS. l FIRE-ESCAPES AND HANGING-SCAFFOLDS- Patented Aug. 21,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE;
CARL L. BEHRENS, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
vIMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-SCAPES AND HANGING SVCAFFOLDS.
e'pecication forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,322, dated August 21, 1877; application lfiled May 28, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, CARL L. BEERENS, of the city of Davenport, in Scott county, and State of Iowa, have invented a Hanging Scaiiold or Life-Preserver, of which the following is a 'specification ing.
The sca'old is illustrated in the horizontal t section, Figure 1, and the vertical sections,
Figs. 2 and 3.
The hollow cylinders c and d are fastened4 at the upper and lower ends ot' the box. Oylinder c is provided with the slotted pill g, which is shown on larger scale in Fig. 4, and is used to stop the motion of the box by press ing the rope in between its sides. The beveled pieces e, with the rollers f f lat the lower rear edge of the box, are to lead the box over small projections in its ldownward direction. In order to lead the box over larger projections, the rope h is attached to the under side ot' the box. The remaining rollers p are attached for easier moving.
1n case the box is pulled up or downsffrom below, the bearingrope i, led throlngh the cralnp-irons k k, will keep the box steady.
It will be evident that, it' the rope is led through the cylinders c and d and over the pulley b in the lower side of the b`ox,'and attached to the pulley l above, the sca'old can be easily moved np and down, and that the beveled piece e, with the rollers f j', will lead the box over small projections in its downward direction.
Having thus fully describedV my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe com bination ot' the hanging box a, cylinders c d, the former provided with a movable slotted pin, g,pnlle,yy b, rollersff, and rollers P P, ropes l1, fi, and cramp-irons K K, all constructed as shown and described.
Y CARL L. BEHRENS.
