Description

T. J. JAMISON RABBLING DEVICE Jan. 9, 1934.
Filed June 24, 1931 Patented Jan. 9, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to rabbling devices, one of my objects being to provide a new and useful device of this character. Other objects may later become apparent.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation through open hearth furnace showing the rabbling device of this invention in position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional plan on the line 11-11 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged end elevation of the rabbling device.
Having reference to this drawing, an open hearth furnace 2, from which the molten metal has been drawn, has its floor or bottom 3 darnaged by holes 4 in which some of the molten metal has been retained. Before the bottom 3 can be renewed or repaired this retained metal must be rabbled out of the holes, this being quite customarily done manually with a great expenditure of man power and time.
My invention provides a means for rabbling out the holes in furnaces by mechanical energy. It consists of a shaft 5 to which an elongated plate 6 is pivoted by a bolt 7. This plate is positioned flatly against the shaft 5 and is arranged to normally hang vertically. It may, however, swing in line with the shaft 5 during its insertion and removal into and from a furnace through one of its charging doors.
In use the shaft 5 is thrust through a furnace door, the plate 6 swinging back along this shaft to permit insertion of the unit, and is positioned so that this plate hangs down over and into a puddle of molten metal contained in a hole in the furnace bottom. Power is then applied to the shaft to impart a rotative motion thereto, which may be an oscillatory one or a continuous rotation depending on the condition and character of the hole being rabbled, the plate 6 effectively rabbling the hole clean.
A convenient method of applying power to the shaft 5 is to provide its end with a coupling 8 which connects to a peel 9 of a furnace charging machine 10. This enables a cheap installation of my invention because charging machines are a necessary accessory to open hearth furnaces and are already in place. The charging machine here contemplated is the ordinary type which has a bucket or shovel arrangement on a peel which is inserted through a furnace door and rotated to discharge the load into the furnace.
Although I have shown and described a speciic form of my invention in accordance with the patent statute, I do not intend to limit my invention thereto except as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with an open hearth furnace charging machine having a peel and means for imparting rotative movement to said peel, oi a rabbling device comprising a shaft, means for coupling said shaft to said peel, an elongated plate iiatly positioned against and pivotally secured to said shaft adjacent its outer end and adapted to swing freely in line with said shaft and to be held against transverse movement relative thereto whereby said plate will normally hang vertically from said shaft and will move with said shaft when rotative movement is applied thereto and will swing in line with said shaft during insertion of the apparatus through a furnace door.
2. |The combination with an open hearth furnace charging machine having a peel and means for imparting rotative movement to said peel, of a rabbling device comprising a shaft, means for coupling said shaft to said peel, an elongated member pivotally connected to said shaft adjacent the outer end thereof and adapted to swing freely in line with said shaft and to be held against transverse movement relative thereto, whereby said elongated member will normally hang vertically from said shaft and will move with said shaft when rotative movement is applied thereto, and will swing in line with said shaft during insertion of the apparatus through a furnace door.
