Claims.
This invention relates to lock constructions and in particular to one employing a knob operated latch which may be actuated from either or both sides of a door, means being employed 5 for preventing opening of the door or manipulation of the latch from the outside.
A particular object of my invention is to provide a construction which is foolproof, which has few parts, which will operate silently and easily l0 and a mechanism which can be used for either a right or a left hand door, the change being made in the assembling of the lock without the necessity of using difierent pieces for right or left hand doors.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a lock combination which can open from both sides of the door, which can open from the inside but is locked from the outside and which cannot be tampered. with and which is of sturdy and wearproof construction.
Changes and variations may be made in the construction shown and described without de-' parting from the principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence such in- 5 vention is not to be confined to the structures shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates a lock housing from which one side plate has been removed to disclose the internal mechanism. The housing consists of the front and rear walls 6 and '7 respectively, and end walls 8, as well as 55 the side walls 9, one of which, as noted, has been Serial No. 620,792
removed. Suitable corner pieces 10 are employed for the reception of the screws that are employed in holding the side plates 9 on the housing. Each of the side plates 9 is provided with a suitable opening in which is disposed and held in any suitable manner, such for instance as by the screw 11, the tumbler cylinder 12 whose projecting finger 13 is used to engage the latch 14 to withdraw the same independent of the action of the knob bar.
The construction of the latch 14 and its associated parts is illustrated in Figure 4, the numeral 14 indicating particularly the latch end having the usual bevelled'side and flat side as is usual. The latch 14, however, is provided with the rearwardly extending legs 15 terminating in outwardly extended flanges 16 which are arranged to be engaged by the knob actuated mechanism and the projection 13 of the tumbler lock 12. The latch 14 carries a pin 17 which is reduced at one end as at 18 and adjacent said end is housed within the cylindrical portion 19 of a spring receptacle 20, the spring being indicated by the numeral 21 and being arranged to pass over the reduced portion 18 of the plunger 17 to maintain the latch 14 normally extended. The movement of the latch 14 is regulated by a stop plate 22 which is secured in any suitable manner to the side wall 9 and extends through and across the undercut portions 23 and 24 formed in the legs 15 of the latch. These undercut portions are provided at opposite sides of the latch as well as at opposite sides of each individual leg and terminate adjacent the latch body 14. The spring receptacle is secured as by the screws 25 to the wall 7 of the housing and when it is desired to use the lock in a door, that is right or left hand, it is simply necessary to take out the spring receptacle 20 together with the latch 14 and reverse the position of the latch 14 and replace the mechanism so that the bevelled face of the latch will be opposite to that shown in Figure 4.
Referring to Figure 3, it will, be noted that the side plate 9 is provided with an opening through which passes the knob bar portion 26 (see also Figure 5) this opening in the plate 9 forming a journal for the boss 2'7 formed on the free latch lever 28 provided with the pivoted latch finger 29 whose free end is overturned for a purposeto be hereinafter described.
The end of the finger 29 is arranged to engage one of the flanges or. wings 16 of the latch 14 to actuate the same against the action of the spring 21. In the position illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the parts are as they would be seen from the outside of the door and it will be noted that the portion 26 of the knob bar indicated in general by the numeral 30, is threaded to the portion 31 thereof, as at 32,so that the parts of the knob bar 26 and 31 may have movement relatively to each other so that they can actuate the various latch levers. In this respect and referring particularly to Figure 5, it will be noted that manipulation of the inside knob of the door operating the parts 26 of the knob bar, will actuate the latch lever 28 so that the latch 14 may be actuated at any time from the inside of the door.
Referring to Figure 2, the mechanism is as just described in connection with Figures 3 and 5 except that there is illustrated the intermediate latch lever or control member 33 which is journalled on the boss 34 of the member 28 and also on the boss 35 of a locking latch lever 36 to be hereinafter referred to. This intermediate latch lever is provided with a nose 3'? on its upper portion and a depending shank 38 provided with a pin 39 which engages the compression spring 40 secured at one end within the sleeve 41 which is held in the lower right hand corner block 10 as illustrated in Figure 2. This sleeve 41 is additionally held in position after being forced by the screws which are threaded into the corner block 10 to hold the side plates 9 in position to form the housing.
The face 42 of the shank 38 provides a corner with the rounded hub portion of the member 33 into which is arranged to snap the free end of the lock lever 43 pivoted as at 44 to one of the plates 9 and secured at its opposite end through the medium of a toggle link 45 with a toggle lever 46. This toggle lever 46 is pivoted as at 4'7 on a pin secured in the plate 9 and at both sides of this pivot pin 4'7, has secured thereto the plungers 48 and 49 which are in turn pivoted to said toggle lever 46 to cause actuation of the same and consequent operation of the lock lever 43. In the position illustrated in Figure 2 when the plunger or finger piece 48 is pressed and it will be understood that these plungers are slidable in the front plate 6 of the lock housing, it engages the nose 37 of the intermediate latch lever 33 and at the same time actuates the toggle lever 46 to rotate the lock lever about its pivot point so that the free end thereof comes up into the notch formed by the meeting surfaces of the hub and shank portions of the intermediate latch lever. This plunger 48 being positioned against the nose 3'7 will prevent jiggling of the intermediate latch lever 33 to disengage the lock lever 43. When the plunger 49 is depressed or pushed inwardly, it rocks the toggle lever 46 and the parts assume the position illustrated in Figure 1 in outline.
Referring to Figure 1, the locking latch lever 36 is provided with a latch finger 50 having a turned over end portion 51 the same as the latch finger connected with the member 28 and the purpose of the turned over portion 51 is to prevent the finger 50 from snapping into the undercut portions of the latch when the same is operated by the tumbler look. This locking latch lever 36 is provided adjacent its lower end with a looking out out 52 and therebeyond a free latching cut out 53. As illustrated in Figure 1, the solid line position of the member 43 engaging, as it does, in the locking cut out and maintained therein by the position of the member 33, as previously described with respect to Figure 2, prevents action of, the member 36 to operate the latch 14 which means that the door cannot be opened from the outside when the upper plunger 48 is pressed in. When, however, the lower plunger 49 is pressed in and the member 43 is thrown to the position shown in outline in Figure 1, the free latching cut out 53 permits operation of the member 36 over the free end of said member 43 with the result that the door can be opened from the outside, it being understood that it can be opened from the inside at any time.
Actuation of the members 28, 33 and 36 in one direction is limited by the pin 55 and in the opposite direction by the stop plate 22 that engages the leg 15 of the latch 14. Movement of the parts 28, 33 and 36 is yieldably resisted by the presser piece 56 pivoted as at 5'7 to the plate 9 and at its free end being of such width that it may engage against the upper portion of the members 28', 33 and 36 to normally maintain their lower ends against the pin 55 in the case of the members 28 and 36, it being understood that the shank 38 of the intermediate member 33 is spring pressed by the spring 40 and the member itself is not actuated by the presser piece 56. The shank 38 of the member 33 is constantly forced against the lock lever 43 by said spring 40 and it will be particularly noted that this action will cause the free end of the member 43 to snap into position, as illustrated in Figure 2 when the upper plunger 48 is pressed, thus effectively locking the parts together.
It will be further noted that the left hand, lower corner piece 10 does not act as a stop for the lock lever 43 and referring to Figures 6 and 7, this member 43 in its portion that engages the link 45, is provided with the stop surfaces 60 and 61 in its under cut portion 62, said stop surfaces limiting the swing of the lock lever in both directions.
A spring 63 positioned over a guide pin 64 bears against one face of the presser piece 56 to urge the same against the members 28 and 36. When it is desired to use the construction, for instance, in a right hand door or rather, with the bolt or latch 14 projecting to the right in Figure 1, it is simply necessary to remove the spring receptacle 20, remove the latch 14, reverse its position so that the bevelled side will be opposite to that shown, and then reverse the position of the parts 28 and 36 with 36 on bottom and 28 on top, leaving the member 33 in its intermediate position, thus rendering the latch inoperable from the outside of the door when it is in its locked position but rendering it operable from both sides of the door when it is in its unlocked position.
It is evident, that I have provided a lock of the latch type which may be operated in the usual manner with the tumbler control mechanism or through the knob mechanism depending upon the position of the control plungers in the lock. Also, there is provided a simplified but sturdy mechanism which may be used for either right or left hand doors with a minimum of change necessary and without the addition of extra parts and a lock which will not get out of order and is foolproof.
My invention is not to be restricted to the precise details of construction shown since va rious changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing the advantages derived from its use.
What I. claim is:-
1. In a look, a retractable latch, a plurality of latch levers including a free latch lever, a knob bar for actuating said latch lever from either side of the lock to retract said latch, and means for yieldably resisting the action of said lever, including a presser piece, arranged to engage said latch levers simultaneously.
2. In a lock, a retractable latch, a plurality of latch levers including a locking latch lever having a locking cut-out therein, a lock lever, and a toggle member for moving the lock lever into and out of said cut-out to respectively prevent and permit operation of said locking latch lever, and means operated by said toggle for preventing movement of the lock lever out of said cut-out.
3. In a lock, a retractable latch including legs having cut-out portions therein and a member engaging some of said portions for limiting the movement of the latch, a plurality of latch levers including a free latch lever and a locking latch lever, a knob bar for actuating said latch lever from either side of the lock to retract said latch, means for yieldably resisting the action of said lever, including a presser piece arranged to engage said levers simultaneously and a toggle operated means for preventing operation of said locking latch lever while permitting operation of said free latch lever.
4. In a lock, a retractable latch having leg extensions and a plunger thereon, said leg extensions having cut-out portions, a receptacle having a sleeve into which said plunger extends, a spring in the receptacle engaging said plunger to yieldably retain the latch in extended position, means for moving said latch and means for limiting the movement of the latch, including a stop plate for engaging in the cut-out portions of the leg extensions, a plurality of latch levers including a free latch lever, a knob bar for actuating said latch lever from either side of the lock to retract said latch, and means for yieldably resisting the action of said lever including a presser piece arranged to engage said latch levers simultaneously.
5.
