and in Germany September 3, 1931 c claims. `(cI. 23S-79) My invention relates to improvements in calculating machinesand more particularly in calculating machines of the type comprising setting disks adapted to be axially shifted into and out of engagement with the numeral wheel operating devices andcarrying laterally directed stepped teeth the desired number of which is brought into position for acting on the numeral disks. The object of the improvements is to provide a calculating machine of this type by means of which products of several factors may be taken and other calculations performed' without setting intermediate products by means of the keys on the said setting disks. With this object in view my invention consists in providing a mechanism numeral disks to the setting disks which is simple in construction and reliable in operation.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown inthe accompanying drawings, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings Fig. `1-is a sectional elevation of the machine showing a part only of the keyboard and the key mechanism,
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a partial sectional the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 4 4 oi' Fig. 1, and l t Fig. 5 ls an elevation showingtwo cam disks used in the mechanism for transmitting the values from the numeral disks to the setting disks.
In the following I shall describe a calculating machine o1 the construction shown and described in the application for patent of Haase, Ser. No. 595,913, led February 29,1932.
As shown in the figures the casing of the machine comprises a base plate 1 and side walls 2 elevation taken on In which van the teeth stepped teeth 55 ot different lengths, while the setting disks 5 are provided with ive teeth 56 of their teeth into positionior engagement with intermediate gear wheels 6 connected with the nu- Ineral disks 7. For` thus shifting the setting disks keys or similar hand-operated devices wardly and out ot engagement with vthe numeral wheel 6, as is shown in Fig. 2. When one o1' the keys 50 is depressed one of the said setting disks are in position for cooperation with the inter- 100 is entered into the machine by only shifting the setting disk 5, and the iigures 6, 7, 8 and 9 are entered into the machine 105 by shifting both setting disks. For this purpose the noses 13 corresponding to the keys representing the lgures l and 6 are bent laterally so fm' that the setting disk 4 is shifted in axial direction one step and so that only the longest tooth gets 11 into position for engagement with the intermediate gear wheel 6, the noses corresponding to the figures 2 and 7 are bent outwardly so far that the said setting disk 4 is shifted two steps, so that two teeth get into position with the intermediate gear wheel 6, the noses 13 corresponding to the figures 3 and 8 are bent so far that three teeth 55 get into operative position, and the noses 13 corresponding to the figures 4 and 9 are bent so far that all the teeth 55 get into operative position. The noses 13 of the bars 11 are bent laterally only at the keys representing the figures 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and so far that they shift the setting disk 5 one step. Thus, for transmitting the numbers from 1 to 4 into the machine only the setting disk 4 is shifted, for transmitting the number 5 into the machine only the setting disk 5 is shifted, and for setting the numbers from 6 to 9 into the machine both setting disks 4 and 5 are shifted. For locking the keys in depressed positions a locking device 15 is provided, and for resetting the keys the said locking device 15 is thrown out of operation by means of a. cam member 17 shifted by a resetting key 16, whereupon the depressed keys and the setting disks 4 and 5 are returned into initial positions.
For mechanically transferring the numbers set on the numeral disks 7 of the main counting mechanism to the setting mechanism 4, 5 the following mechanism is provided: 'I'he gear wheels 57 of the numeral disks 7 are in mesh with gear wheels 19 rotatably mounted on a shaft 18, and to the hubs 20 of the said gear wheels 19 cam disks 21 and 22 are secured. The cam disks 21 are arranged in four steps of different radii and corresponding to the numbers from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9, while, the cam disk 22 has a single step for the numbers from 5 to 9. The said cam disks cooperate with slides 23 and 24 guided in slots of transverse walls 58 and 59 and acted upon by springs 25 tending to shift the same forwardly and into engagement with the cam disks 21 and 22. Normally the slides are held out of engagement with the cam disks by pins 26 fixed to a rock shaft 27. To the said rock shaft a hand lever 28 is secured which is acted upon by a spring 29 tending to rock the same rearwardly and with the pins 26 into engagement with arms 60 secured to the slides 23 and 24. When the hand lever 28 is rocked forwardly, in Fig. 1, the pins 26 release the slides 23 and 24 and the springs 25 shift the said slides forwardly and into engagement with the cam disks 21 and 22. To the rear ends of the slides 23 and 24 bars 30 are secured which project downwardly therefrom and into position for engagement with pins 31 secured to slides 32 and 33. Normally the said slides 32 and 33 are pulled rearwardly by springs 34, so that the pins 3l bear on the bars 30. The slides 32 are formed each with four notches and shoulders 61, and the slides 33 each with a single shoulder, and the said shoulders are engaged by spring pawls 35 secured to a rock shaft 36. When the hand lever 28 is rocked forwardly for releasing the slides 23, 24 the said slides and the slides 32, 33 are pulled forwardly, and when the hand lever 28 is released and rocked rearwardly by the spring 29 the slides 23 and 24 are likewise rocked rearwardly by the pins 26, while the slides, 32 remain in projected positions in which they are locked by the pawls 35. When the slides 32 and 33 are shifted forwardly they slide on inclined cam faces 37 and 38 of the bars 10 and 11, and they shift one or both setting disks 4 and 5 towards each other and into positions for engagement with the intermediate gear wheels 6. l0 are rocked through a greater or smaller angle according as the slides 32 and 23 are allowed to be projected more or less by the springs 25 and the steps of the cam disks 21, so that the number set on the numeral disk 7 and corresponding to the operative step of the cam disk 21 is transmitted to the corresponding, setting disk 4, and the slide 33 will be shifted sufficiently for engaging the cam 38, or it will not be so shifted, according to the number appearing in the corresponding numeral disk. During this transferring operation the keys and their mechanisms are not acted upon. If now the main shaft 3 is rotated, the number carried into the setting apparatus is entered into the calculation in the same way as if the said value had been set by means of the keys.
The setting disks 4 and 5 are reset by means of the resetting key 16. At its bottom end the stem 62 of the said resetting key 16 carries a cam 39 which cooperates with a rail 40 acted upon by a spring 41 and connected with an arm 63 secured to the shaft 36. When the key 16 is depressed the cam 39 shifts the rail 40 rearwardly in opposition to the spring 41, so that the pawls 35 are retracted from their shoulders, and the bars 32, 33 are retracted from the cam faces 37 and 38 by the springs 34, whereupon the bars 10 and 11 and the disks 4 and 5 are returned into initial positions by the springs 14.
When the hand lever 28 is operated for transferring the number set on the numeral wheels to the setting disks 4 and 5, and the said setting disks are still in operative positions for transmitting a number set thereon by the keys, a wrong figure might appear in the setting disks at the end of the transferring operation by means of the lever 28. Therefore, at the beginning of the rocking movement of the hand lever 28 the keys are first reset, and for this purpose one of the pins 26 fixed to the rock shaft 27 forces a rod 42 forwardly, which rod is formed at its front end with a bevelled face 43 adapted to engage a lug 64 secured to the comb 17 and to shift the said ,comb laterally and in a direction for throwing the locking devices 15 out of locking engagement with the keys.
I claim:
