SHEET FEED ROTARY PRIn'rnvG r'REss Howard M.Barber,- Pa wcatuck," Conn., a'ssignor to 0.3. Cottrell & Sons Company, 1 -R,. L, a corporation of Delaware Westerly,
Application April 30, 1932'. :Serial No. t608,41 3
14'Claims. (o1. 101 174) each transfer device being arranged to take successive sheets from its particular source of sheet supply andtotransfer the sheets directly to alternate surfaces of the impression cylinder; thereby eliminating the handling of the sheets more than" once-on their way from their source of sheet supply to, the impression cylinder.
,Apractical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in -which: 'M g V Fig: 1 representsa detail side elevation of a sheet feed rotary printing press with my; improved sheet-feeding mechanism included there,- m; I i Y 1 Fig.2 represents a detail ,end view of the press withvthe form cylinders and delivery mechanism removed; and 1 :7 I l r Fig.3 represents a longitudinal vertical central section through the press.
Five form cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4, 5are shown arranged around the upperside-of their impressioh' cylinder 6. :This impression cylinder 6 is herein shown as having three impression surfaces '7, 8, 9' and their three sets of sheet grippers 10,- 11,12, the distances between thegrippers equaling the circumferences of the form cylinders,
7 -.Two sources of sheet supply are herein shown as sheet feed tables 13 and 14 arranged, oneabove the other, on the same side of the'impression cylinder, the upper feed table being provided with the sheet stop 15 mounted on its rock shaft 16, and the lower sheet feed table being provided with the sheet stop 17 mounted on its rock shaft 18 l 1 Two rotary sheet carriers 19, 20, which 'are herein shown asreels are arranged to transfer the sheets from their respective upper and lower sheet feed tables 13 and 14 tothe impression cylinder 6. Theupperrotary sheet carrier is provided with a set of grippers 21 which is arranged to take a sheet every second revolution of the rotary carrier from the sheet feed table 13 and transfer it to the grippers of alternate impression surfaces of-the impression cylinder 6. Similarly, the lower rotary sheet car'r'ier20 is provided with a set of grippers 22 which is arranged to take a sheet every second revolution of the carrier from the lower sheet feed table '14 and transfer I the sheet to the grippers of alternate impression surfaces of the impression cylinder 6. Therefore, successive impressioncylinder surfaces re- PATENT OFFICE ceive sheets alternately from said'two sources" of sheet supply.
As the rotary carriers 19 and 20 transfer a.
sheet at alternate revolutions of the carriers to the impression cylinder it is necessary to pro- Y vide meansto makerthe sheet stops 15 and 1'7 and therotary carrier grippers 21 and 22 inoperativeat every other revolution of their respective carriers. It is also necessary to control the operation of the impression cylinder grippers so that each set of grippers 10, 11 and 12 will alternately take sheets from the two rotary"sheet carriers. l The means plishing this result is constructed, arranged and operated as follows: l
i The cam shaft 23 for controlling the operation of the sheet stop 15 of the feed table 13 and'also foreco'ntrolling the operation of the grippers 21' of 'the rotary carrier 19 aswell as theoperation of the-grippers 10, 11, 12- of the impression cylinder is driven from the shaft 24; of the rotary carrier 19' through a chain and sprocket connection 25, 26, 27 at one-half the speed of the said rotary carrier "19; This cam shaft 23 is provided with a cam 28 which operates the sheet stop-15 to release the sheet every second revolution of; the
'rotary'c'arrier 19 through the lever29 carried by the rock shaft 16. A cam 30' on the cam shaft 23 serves to control the operationof the tumbler actuating pins 31, 32, to'actuate the grippers 21 to take the sheet from thefeed table 13 and transfer it to the proper set of impression cylindergrippers, through the rock shaft 33 and its rock levers 34, 35, 36. Another cam 3'1 on the shaft 23 controls, througha rock lever 38, the lateral movement of the movable member 39 of the impressioncylinder gripper cam 39, 40, so that the movable cam member 39 can be moved out'of its operative position to permit the passage of the impression cylinder grippers which have taken a sheet from the lower rotary carrier 20.
The cam shaft llfor controlling the operation of the1sheetstop17 forithe lower sheet feed table 14 and also thetumbler actuating. grippers 22 of the rotarylcarrier 20..is. driven at half speed from the shaft 42 of the rotary carrier 20 through the chain and sprocket connection 43, '44, 45.
shaft 41 is provided with a cam 46 which operates the sheet stop 17 to release a sheet from the table 14every secondrevolution of the rotary carrier 20, through a lever 47 carried by the rock shaft 18;, This cam shaft 41 is also provided witha whichI have shown for accom-- This cam 48 which controls the operation of the turnbler cam actuating pins 49, 50 to operate the grippers 22 to take a sheet from the table 14 and transfer it to the proper impression cylinder grippers, through a rock shaft 51 and its levers 52, 53 and 54.
The delivery mechanism is herein shown as including a rotary carrier 55 located at the underside of the impression cylinder 6, which delivery carrier 55 is provided with a set of grippers 56 arranged to take the printed sheets from the sue cessive impression cylinder grippers and transfer the sheets to a suitable endless delivery carrier 57. A cam 58 is located in position to open the delivery carrier grippers 56 .to receive the printed sheet from its impression cylinder grippers. Another cam 59 is arranged in position to open the delivery carrier grippers 56 for-trans ferring the printed sheet to the endless delivery carrier 5'7.
' From the above description it'will be seen that each sheet transfer carrier operates every second revolution to take a sheet fromits sheet feed table and transfer the sheets to alternate surfaces of the impression cylinder so that successive impression surfaces bearshee'ts from alternate sheet feed tables. It will also be seen that the fixedmemb'er 40 of the impression cylinder gripper cam operates to open the impression cylinder grippers successively after the last printing impressions on the sheets to permit the printed sheets to be taken by the delivery carrier and transferred thereby .to the endless carrier. It will also be seen that the movable member 39 of the"impression cylinder gripper cam is moved out of the way of the set of grippers which is to take a sheet from the lower transfer carrier 20, thereby permitting the grippers to take the said sheet. Said movable cam member is moved into the wayof the set-of grippers 'which .is to take a sheet from the upper transfer carrier :19, thereby causing said grippers to remain open until in position to take the said sheet.-
It will also be seen that by this invention the sheets are transferred from each source of sheet supply" directly to the impression cylinder, :thus ensuring greater accuracy in register than is possible where, as heretofore, the sheets weretaken from one source by a carrier, transferred to an other carrier and then transferred by the latter carrier to the impression cylinder.
