Description

H. R. WINN. INKIN'G APPARATUS FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
*Patented Aug. 14,1877.
N.FETERS, PHOTD-UTNDGRAPHER WASHINGTON, n. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. WINN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN INKING APPARATUS FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,065, dated August 14, 1877; application filed March 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY R. WINN, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Inking Apparatus for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improved ink fount, more particularly designed as an attachment to printing-presses of the Gordon class, havingarotaryink-table, and having for its object to effect a regular and uniform delivery and distribution of color upon the inking-roller of such a press.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section.
In the drawing, A represents a bracket,
which may be adjustably secured to the frame of the press by means of a tap bolt through the slot or at one side of and below the ink table. The rear end extends back of and above the said table, and to it is hinged an arm, A, to the front end of which is removably attached an ink-fount, B, open at the front end, across which a metal roller, (J, is journaled in brackets b, with a ratchet, c, at one end, with which a spring-pawl, d, engages. Above the roller a gate, D slides in guides at the sides of the fount, and is raised or lowered by a thumb-screw, e, tappedthrough the girtf.'
The arm carrying the fount rests upon a curved block, E, having-a lug, g, at the bottom, projecting through a slot, h, in the brackets. A screw, F, is tapped through thelng g,
' by turning which the block E may be moved up or down the inclined end of the bracket,
the eii'ect of which is to raise or lower the fount and its roller in plane.
The bracket should be so adjusted as to just have the rear roller of the press pass under and behind the fount-roller, which it partially rotates in so doing, if in contact therewith, in passing back the latter roller taking ink out of the fount. turns forward the fount-roller is stationary, and a portion of the ink on the contact-surface is taken oft by the former.
The amount or thickness of the film of color on the press-roller is gaged by the gate D, and the length of contact on the fount-roller by adjusting the elevation of the fount.
When it is desired to run the color off the ink-table, the fount-arm can be thrown back out'of the way; and to change colors the fount may be removed, and another charged with the desired color can be secured to the arm.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The fount B, provided with the roller 0, a ratchet and pawl, and the adjustable gate D, in combination with a jointed bracket, adapted to support it above the ink-table of a press, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the block E and screw F with the jointed bracket A A',,for adjusting the plane ofan ink-fount above the ink-table of a press, substantially as described.
