The invention relates to duplicating machines of the type employing a gelatine matrix on which the master sheet is first impressed and of which copies to the desired 'number are taken, and has reference more particularly to novel means for accurately registering the master and copy sheets with the forward edge of a gelatine matrix.
In order to secure, in the operation of the above type of machines, correct positioning and aligning of the master and copy sheets with the forward edge of the gelatine band so that the duplicated copies will be provided with adequate inarginal edges, the machines are equipped with margin barsmounted within the frame of the machine or on the platen carriage and parallel with the surface of the band. One of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide hectograph machines with improved means for initial positioning and squaring the sheets withthe forward edge of the gelatine band and which will also form a stop whereby to insure the introduction of the forwardedge. of the sheet to the proper amount or extent.
Another objectv is to provide a pivotally mounted margin bar which will have an infinite number of adjustable positions within certain defined limits of movement of the bar to fulfill an infinite number of marginal requirements.
A still further object is to provide a margin bar pivotally mounted on the carriage frame which will have an operative toinoperative positon with respect to the copy holder, and which in inoperative position will permit the use` cfa vmargin bar positioned on the frame of the machine independent of the carriage. p l Another object is to provide an` improved margin `bar for machines of the class described, mounted in the traveling platen carriage and adapted to be positively located in paper feeding position and withdrawn therefrom by the upward anddownwar'd movements respectively of the platen roller.
Yet another object is to provide a margin .bar having an innite number of adjustable marginal positions, the adjustment being effected by means of a manually operated handle.
A still further object is to provide an adjustable marginal bar mounted within the carriage and constructed to compensate for variations in the distance between the frames of the carriage and further adapted to withstand normal wear inthe operating parts without materially effecting the operating efficiency of the same.
A still further object is to provide a margin bar of right angled cross section having a 'nar- (Cl. lOl-133) row iiat connecting surface angularly disposed to the two legs, whereby thin sheets or heavy card stock will be supported and held in the same relative position for registration.
With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specication, drawings and claims appended hereto.

Referring to the drawings, particularly Figures and 3, the machine is shown as comprising paced frame members 1G connected by a tie bar 1 at their respective ends and supporting a flat 90 platen 12 upon which is stretched the gelatin band 13, wound at each end of they platen upon spindles 14, journaled in the frame members 10. Adapted to travel over the surface of the gelatin band is a platen carriage designated in its entirety at 15, the same comprising a yoke member 16 having sliding engagement upon the horizontal rod 17, secured to brackets 18 formed integral Vwith the respective ends of one of the frames 10. The carriage proper comprises a pair of spaced parallel side members 20 and 21, connected at their ends by the spaced parallel end walls 22 and 23, the spaced side members being suitably secured to the yoke member 16 to form a unitary assembly. To facilitate the travel of the carriage over the platen l2, side member 21 has secured thereto depending studs 24 which rest `upon tracks formed upon the frames l0 and to properly locate the carriage at its forward end the same has secured theretov a bumper 25 110 adapted to engage a shoulder formed on one of the frames.
Pivotally mounted within the carriage end walls 22 and 23 is a handle arm 26 provided with a handle 27 and secured to the rotatably mounted shaft 28. Spring 29, mounted on shaft 28, is secured at one end to side member 20 and at its other end to the handle arm 26 so that the arm is resiliently maintained in upright position. Extensions 30 formed integral with the handle 26 provide journaling means for the shaft 3l on which is mounted the impression roller 32 driven by means of the pulley 33 at one end of the same, Figure 3, around which passes the cable 34 suspended at one end from the rotatable arm 35 and being secured at its other end to any suitable bracket formed on the respective side frame l0. During travel of the carriage back and forth on the surface of the platen it is seen that positive rotation is imparted to the impression roller 32 through means of the Cable, the impression roller serving to feed the sheet 36 from copy holder 37 between the same and the pressure roller 38 supported in the pivoted links 39 and spring pressed in the desired direction by spring 40. With roller 32 in contact with the pressure roller 38 the sheet is impressed upon the surface of the gelatin band 13 to impart to or receive an impression therefrom, as is common and well known in machines of this class.
In its forward position the carriage andthus the impression roller 32 is definitely located with respect to the forward edge of the gelatin band 13, since the carriage is limited in its movement towards the left, Figure 2, by meansoi bumper 25. .With the impression roller in released position the copy sheet 36 is inserted between the same and the pressure roller 33, the leading edge `engaging the margin bar 42 so that the position of the margin bar determines the extent of margin provided on the forward edge of the same. Margin. bar 42 is provided with bearings 43, Figure 5, formed integrally with the ends of the bar and with a lower paper supporting end of right angled cross section, the right angle surfaces being connected with a hat surface 44 disposed at approximately 45 to the same. Pivot shafts 45 and 46 pass through the bearings 43 of the margin bar and support the same within the end walls of the carriage.l Shaft 45 has a tight iit with its respective bearing 43 but is loosely mounted within side wall 22, while shaft 46 is loosely mounted in its respective bearing and is threaded at its other end to support 47, the support being in turn suitably secured to thev end wall 23. Coil spring 48, located on shaft 46, between support 47 and the margin bar, servesto resiliently urge the bar in a direction towards the left, as viewed by the operator in Figure 3.
A feature of the present invention, among others, is the provision of a margin bar which will have an innite number of adjusted positions within the limits of movement of the bar so as to permit the placing of the entire copy sheet upon the gelatin band or the placing of the sheets so that their front edge 'overhangs the front edge of the band, which may be readily grasped for removing the sheet. Referring to Figure 2 the handle arm 26 has secured thereto at one end a plate 50 having slot 5l provided therein. Stud 52 integral with member 53 is adapted to operate within the slot, the member 53 being in turn adjustably threaded to the connecting rod 54.
v A guide 55 provided with an integral bearing portion 56` is loosely mounted on the pvot shaft 45 and is provided with a longitudinal bore through which the connecting rod 54 passes, the same being slidably mounted therein. As shown in Figure 4, rod 54 has secured to its end a pivot member 57 rotatably mounted in the bifurcated end of link 58. The other end of the link is bored to accommodate the stud 60 on which is integrally formed or secured the eccentric 61, the eccentric being located within housing 62 and having threaded thereto the handle 63. The housing is slotted at 64 for receiving the handle and inadvertent rotation or jarring of the eccentric 61 is prevented by means of spring 65 and washer 66. The housing 62 is formed integrally with lever 68, the same being bored at its 0pposite end forming bearing 69, by means of which the lever isY rigidly secured to the pivot shaft 45 so that actuation of lever 68 will impart rotation to the pivot shaft and corresponding pivotal movement to the margin bar 42.
With the impression roller 32 in released position, as shown in Figure 2, the margin bar is positioned substantially under the impression roller in position to receive the leading edge of the copy sheet inserted between the rollers. Upon actuation of handle 27 to the right the impression roller is depressed to impress the marginal edge of the paper upon the surface of the gelatin band 13. Movement of the handle arm 26 and thus the impression roller vto depressed position continues until one end of slot 51 engages the stud 52, whereupon further movement of the handle arm will impart movement towards the right to the connectingrod 54, thefsame serving to actuate link 58, lever 68 and the margin bar 42, to withdraw the bar from out of the path of the impression roller. As this operation takes place the impression roller engages the pressure roller 38 holding the sheet of paper between the rollers and as final downward movement is given to the impression roller the forward edge of the paper is impressed upon the gelatin, the position of the parts at the end of this operation being shown in Figure 1. `At the end of the printing stroke ka reverse of the above takes place, as the operator, to release the duplicated copy, actuates handle 27 towards the left, imparting upward movement to the impression roller 32 and the movement continues until the other end of slot 51 engages the stud 52, imparting movement to the connecting rod to the left, rocking the link 58 and thus lever 68 to locate the margin bar 42 again under the impression roller in position for receiving another sheet of paper. By the above construction it is seen that the margin barA has pivotal movement within the carriage, the movements of the same being controlled by the actuation of handle'27 to locatel the impression roller in depressed or released position. Thus automatically as the roller is released the margin bar swings into operative position to receive the inserted sheet and as the roller is subsequently depressed the bar automatically swings out of the path of the same leaving the forward edge of the sheet to be impressed upon the gelatin.
It will be seen that the position of the margin bar as it receives the inserted sheet in relation to the forward edge of the gelatin band determines the depth or extent of margin provided on theV forward edge of the sheet. Rotation of handle 63 from the full line position to the dotted line position, Figure 2, will accordingly vary the position the margin bar'assumes in relation to the forward edge of the gelatin band, the positions varying from no margin to maximum margin respectively. The handle 63 is directly' secured to the eccentric 61, as described, and thus actuation of the handle serves to rotate the eccentric within the housing 62. The position the eccentric assumes determines the adjusted position of lever 68 from maximum elevated position to maximum lowered position, as shown in full and dotted lines respectively in Figure 2. The rocking of lever 68 is imparted to the pivot shaft 45 as the lever is rigidly secured thereto and the rotation of the pivot shaft is in turn imparted to the margin bar.
The handle 63 is located in the upper part oi the carriage and is thus readily accessible at all times to the operator. During the operation of the machine should it become desirable to change the margin or the extent the forward edge of the sheets overhang the edge of the gelatin band, it is only necessary `for the operator to adjust the position of the Vhandle 63 rotating the eccentric 61 to properly position the margin ban The adjustment is accomplished Without any change in the operative parts of the carriage assembly and furthermore is innitely selective within the limits ol' movement of the bar.
It is to be understood that I do not Wish to be limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown, which is merely by Way of illustration and not limitation, as various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
l. In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, a margin bar mounted in and traveling with said carriage, and. rotatable means for adjusting the position of said bar in said carriage.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, a platen roller rotatably mounted in said carriage, and a pivotally mounted margin bar in said carriage, said bar having a plurality of adjusted positions with respect to said platen roller.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, a platen roller rotatably mounted in said carriage, a pivotally mounted margin bar in said carriage and disposed adjacent said roller, and means for adjusting the position of said bar.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, a platen roller rotatably mounted in said carriage, a pivotally mounted margin bar in said carriage and disposed adjacent said roller, and manually operated means accessible to the operator for adjusting the position of said bar.
5, In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, a margin bar, means pivotally mounting said bar in said carriage, and means operatively associated with the mounting means for adjusting the position of said bar.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, a margin bar,.means adjustably mounting the bar in said carriage, and means operatively associated with the mounting means and accessible to the operator for manually adjusting the position of said bar.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, a margin bar disposed adjacent the roller and having mounted means in the upper portion of said carriage, means maintaining the bar in desired position With respect to the roller, said means being constructed and arranged so that the position of said bar can be adjusted.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, a margin bar disposed adjacent the roller and having mounting means in the upper portion of said carriage, an eccentric operatively associated with the mounting means and operative for adjustably positioning said bar with respect to the roller, and a handle secured to the eccentric for manually adjusting the position of said bar.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage for movement from released to depressed position, a swinging margin bar, means for positioning said bar as the roller is located in released position to receive the leading edge of a sheet of paper, and manually operated means for adjusting the position of said bar.

In a duplicating machine the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, an impression member journaled in said carriage, a pivoted margin bar having a plurality of adjusted positions relative to said impression member, and means for adjusting the position of said bar comprising an eccentric and a handle secured thereto.

In a duplicating machine the combination with Ya printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, an impression member journaled in said carriage, a pivoted margin bar having a plurality of adjusted positions relative to said impression member, means for adjusting the position of said bar including a lever operatively secured thereto, an eccentric associated with said lever, and a handle for rotating said eccentric to vary the position of said lever and said margin bar.
12, In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, means journalled in the carriage and carrying an impression roller, a margin bar pivotally mounted in the carriage, a lever having connection with the bar, a housing in one end of the lever for receiving an eccentric, and connections from the eccentric to the journalling means for the roller, said connections being operative-upon movement of the means to locate the roller in a released position to move the bar into the path of the roller and out of its path as the means are actuated to locate the roller in depressed position, and a handle secured to the eccentric for rotating the same to vary the adjusted position of the bar.'

In a duplicatinfr machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, means journalled in the carriage and carrying an impression roller, studs extending from the carriage for pivotally mcuntinfI a margin bar therein, a lever formed with a housing in one end and having connection at its other end with the bar, an eccentric in the housing, and linkage connecting the eccentric with the journalling means for the roller, said eccentric being rotatable for varying the position of the bar.

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed and a carriage for movement over the bed, of an impression roller carried by the carriage, a margin bar pivotally mounted in the carriage, said bar having movement into and out of the pathof the roller as the same is located in a released and depressed position, respectively, and means for adjusting the position of said bar to vary its relative position with respect to the roller when tlie saine is in released position.

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a platen carriage adapted to travel over said bed, means journalled in the carriage carrying an impression roller, a margin bar pitotally mounted in the carriage, connections op tively connecting the bar with the journalling means for tlie roller, whereby the bar has movement as the means are rocked to locate the roiier in a released or depressed position, and adjusting means for varying the relative position of the bar with respect to the roller, said adjusting means being included in tlie connections.

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a carriage mount to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, means for moving said impression roller to and from a functionally operative position, a margin bar constrained to move With said carriage, and means actuated by the first mentioned means for displacing said margin bar intoA and out of a functionally operative position, said means for displacing said margin bar including' adjustable means for varying the functionally operative position of said margin bar with respect to said impression roller.

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a carriage mounted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, means for moving said impression roller to and from a functionally operative position, a margin bar constrained to move Withsaid carriage, and means operatively connected to the first mentioned means for displacing Said margin bar from a functionally operative position to a functionally inoperative position and vice versa, said means for displacing said margin bar including adjustable means for varying said functionally operative and functionally inoperative positions of said margin bar with respect to said functionally operative position of said impression roller.

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a carriage mounted to travel over said bed, an impression roller joui'- naled in said carriage, means for moving said impression roller to and from a functionally operative position, a margin bar constrained to move with said carriage, and means actuated by the first mentioned means for displacing said margin bar from a functionally inoperative position to a functionally operative position and vice versa, said means for displacing said margin bar including adjustable means for shifting the range of travel of said margin bar with respect to said impression roller.

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a carriage mounted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, means for moving said impression roller to and from a functionally operative position, a margin bar constrained to move with saidcarriage, and means for displacing said margin bar into and out of its functionally operative position and for shifting said functionally operative position of said margin bar to vary the length of 4the margins provided on the sheets being duplicated.

In a duplicating machine,v the combination with a printing bed, of a carriage mounted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, means for moving said impression roller toi and from a functionally operative position, a margin bar constrained to move With said carriage, and means actuated by the first mentioned means for displacing said margin bar from its functionally operative position to its functionally inoperative position and for shifting said functionally operative position of said margin bar with respect to said impression roller.

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a printing bed, of a carriage mounted to travel over said bed, an impression roller journaled in said carriage, means for 1 roving said impression roller to and from a functionally operative position, a margin bar constrained to move with said carriage, and means actuated by the rst mentioned means for displacing said margin bar into and out of a functionally operative position, said means for displacing said margin bar including an eccentric for varying the functionally operative position of said margin bar with respect to said impression roller.
