Description

' Dec. 12, 1933. F. RAU
PAPER TACKING MACHINE Filed Jan. 18. 1932 Patented. Dec. 12, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAPER TACKING MACHINE many Application January 18, 1932,
and in Germany In Serial No. 587,888. bruary 28, 1981 1 Claim- (Cl. "-1) The present invention relates to a paper tacking machine, wherein'the paper, that is to be clipped or tacked together is passed through between two wheels provided with wedge shaped s teeth thus tacking the paper sheets together. Such machines are already known per se. The essential feature of the present invention as hereinafter described lies in the resilient mounting of one of the tacking members.
The invention is described hereinafter. The drawing shows a section through the machine.
In the case of such tacking machines as hither.- to known, one of the tacking elements was mounted either in or on a yielding or resilient lever, or is in cross pieces provided with rubber buffers or in guiding slides. All these designs however have the disadvantage that the resiliency i. e. the ability to yield of one of the tacking members does not act quickly enough, as this type of resilient mounting has in the first instance to overcome certain frictional resistances, a fact which is very deleterious considering that the various documents to be tacked together are frequently made of paper of varying thickness.
I have designed a mounting which ensures a substantially frictionless yet resilient action and which is also very cheap to manufacture. I, have ascertained by experiments that the present invention enables a very much larger number of sheets of paper to be securely tacked together than was hitherto possible, a. fact which is solely due to the elasticity of the mounting of one of the tacking members.
The tacking or crimping machine which essentially comprises a body 3 is clamped on the table 1 by means of the clamping screw 2.
The bottom tacking or crimping wheel 4 is mounted in the body 3 and can be rotated by means of a crank handle 5. The top tacking or crimping member or wheel 8 is mounted and loose- 1y rotates on a slightly bowed spindle '1 consisting of resilient steel wire. This resilient steel wire spindle is at one end mounted in a bearing journal or sleeve 9 which is pressed into a suitable bore in the body 3, and is at its otherextremity mounted in the bore provided in a regulating screw 8. This regulating screw 8 can be axially displaced thus causing the spindle 7 to be more or less bowed and the tacking wheel 6 to be pressed more or less go against the bottom tacking wheel or member; Rotation of the regulating screw in a clockwise direction increases the pressure between the two tacking or crimping wheels. A table 10 is provided which serves to carry the paper to be crimped toas gether. The device above described is an embodiment of the invention; it is of course self evident that it would also be possible to make the spindle of a bundle of resilient steel wires instead of only of one such wire. The machine functions as 101- lows, viz:
The paper to be tacked or crimped together is passed through two wheels 4 and 6, provided with teeth of a special shape the paper being rolled through between said wheels by rotating them by means of the crank handle 5, it being possible for the top tacking wheel 6 which is mounted directly on a resilient spindle to adjust itself instantly to the various thic of the papers to be tacked together without having first of all to overcome frictional resistances. The extent of the pressure exerted may be adjusted according to the thickness of the papers by means of the adlusting screw 8.
I claim:
A paper tacking or crimping machine comprising a pair of interengaged crimping wheels, a shaft to rotate one of said wheels, a fixed bearing for said shaft, a resilient, bowed shaft for the other wheel on the bowed portion of which the said wheel is mounted loosely for rotation, and means to support the ends of said resilient, bowed shaft, said supporting means including adjustable means for axially moving one end of said shaft to thereby vary the extent of the heme. thereof 5 and hence correspondingly vary the pressure between the two crimping wheels.
