Claims. (01. 17s 259) This invention relates to improvements in connecters designed primarily for attaching cables to storage battery terminals.
The primary object of the present invention is l to provide a connecter which may be easily and quickly attached to the .terminal'post of a battery and which may also be easily disconnected therefrom, even though the terminal be badly corroded.
It is, of course, well known that the majority of 'connecters between cables and battery terminals are in the form of split rings, the ends of which are drawn together by a nut and bolt in order to tighten the ring about the terminal post'of the battery. Due to the acid of the battery the terminal posts become badly corroded and this corrosion also affects the connecters so that the threads upon the bolt which secures the connecter to the terminal become so badly eaten that it is practically impossible to remove the bolt.
' With the device embodying the present invention the foregoing difficulties are overcome by providing the terminal receiving portion of the connecter which is in the form of a split ring having ears extending in spaced parallel relation from the ends thereof, with a pin extending between the terminals upon which is mounted a cam member which, when rotated, bites into th adjacent battery terminal post.
It will, of course, be readily understood that by reversely rotating this cam member the connection between the split ring of the connecter and the terminal post will be loosened so that the connecter may be lifted off without difficulty.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming. part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates generally the cable connecter by means of which a cable is attached to a battery terminal post, a terminal post being indicated by the numeral 2.
The connecter l is in the form of a split ring 3 to which is integrally attached a sleeve 4 in which the end of a cable'5 may be secured. The ends of the ring 3 are extended laterally to form the spaced parallel arms 6 through which apertures 7 are formed for the reception of anoscillatable pin 8 which is cut away upon one face as indicated at 9 at a point which will lie between the arms 6 when the pin is in position.
Disposed between the arms 6 upon the pin 8 is a cam body 10, the peripheral'surface constituting the high point thereof being provided with ribs 11 which bear against the side of the terminal post 2 when the device is placed in position thereon, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. This cam body 10 has an arm 12 by which it may be rotated upon the pin 8 to bring the ribbed high point thereof into engagement with the terminal.
As shown in Figure 3 when the connecter is placed in position over the terminal 2 the pin 8 is oscillated by means of the lever 13 extending at right angles from one end thereof so that the recessed portion 9 will be directed toward the post 2. I
The cam 10 is oscillated until the grooved surface thereof comes into contact with the post, the edge of the aperture through the cam through which the pin 8 passes being positioned in the recess 9 as illustrated. After placing the parts in the position described the pin 8 is oscillated by swinging the arm 13 downwardly so as to force the unrecessed portion of the pin against the edge of the aperture through the cam thus 2 causing the cam to be forced inwardly so that the ribs thereof will bite into the post 2.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a double cam action is employed for locking the connecter onto the battery terminal post, that is the cam body 10 is first eccentrically rotated so that the ribbed surface thereof will be brought into contact with the post, after which the pin is oscillated so that the cam will be forced out of the recess therein and moved with sufficient member disposed between the ends of the ring.

2. A battery terminal connecter of the character described, comprising a split ring member having spaced arms extending from the ends thereof, said ring member being designed to receive a battery terminal post and further being adapted to have a cable attached thereto, an oscillatable pin member extending through and connecting said arms and having arecess formed therein intermediate its ends to position between the arms, a cam member mounted upon said pin between .said arms and having ribs formed thereon for engagement with the adjacent terminal post, said'cam member being rotatable on the pin to move it to position against the post, and the said ribs of the cam member being forced into the terminal post through the oscillation of the pin to cause the cam to ride out of the recess in the pin.
3. A battery terminal connecter of the character described, comprising a split ring body designed to receive a battery terminal post, a pin member connecting the ends of said ring and oscillatably mounted therein, a fiat member disposed -between said ring ends and having a circular edge portion arranged for engagement with a terminal post positioned in the ring and further having an aperture therethrough eccentric to said circular edge, through which aperture said pin extends, and said pin being formed to provide a cam surface disposed in said flat member aperture which, upon oscillation from one position, effects movement of the curved edge of the apertured member inwardly for contact with a post in the ring.

A battery terminal connecter, comprising a split ring to which an electric cable may be attached, said ring being designed to receive a battery terminal post and having the ends thereof in spaced parallel relation and provided with aligned apertures, a centrally apertured body disposed between the ends of said ring and having a circular edge portion, and a pin extending through 'the apertures of said ring ends and through the aperture of said member, said pin having an eccentrically formed circumferentially extending area which is disposed within the aperture of said member, said circumferentially extending area of the pin facilitating the shifting of the circular edge of said member relative to a terminal post located within the ring body, when the pin is rotated.

A battery terminal connecter, comprising a split ring to which an electric cable may be attached, said ring being designed to receive a battery terminal post and having the ends thereof in spaced parallel relation and provided with aligned apertures, an apertured body disposed between the ends of said ring and having a circular edge portion, a pin extending through the apertures of said ring ends and through the aperture of said member, said pin having an eccentrically formed circumferentially extending area which is disposed within the aperture of said member, said circumferentially extending area of the pin facilitating the shifting of the circular edge of said member relative to a terminal post located within the ring. body. when the pin is rotated, said apertured member having the aperture therein eccentric to the circular edge thereof, means for facilitating the rotation of said pin, and means formed integrally with the member for facilitating its oscillation on and about the pin.
