- GRINDING MACHI'NE Filed June 15, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 (Ittorneg Patented Dec. 12, 1933 UNITED STATES GRINDING MACHINE Andrew Strom, Cincinnati, Ohio, assignor to 7 Cincinnati Grinders Incorporated, Cincinnati,
. Ohio, a corporation of Ohio 1 Application June 15, 1931. Serial No. 544,421 9 Claims. (01. 125-11) This invention relates to improvements in grinding machines and especially to improvements in devices for truing, trimming and forming a grinding wheel.
An object of the invention is the provision of a truing tool adapted to trim and true a grinding wheel to apredetermined form for grinding formed work pieces such as seaming rolls, or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved truing tool adapted primarily for tapering the sides of an abrading or grinding wheel, and contouring the operative face of said wheel to a predetermined crosssection.
These and other objects are attained bythe means illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification thereof, and it is to be understood that any modifications may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope-of the appended claims, without departing fromor exceeding the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary illustration of a grinding machine illustrating the device of this invention mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the showing in Figure 1. I
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3- -3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the mechanism illustrated in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view as seen from line 5-5 on Figure 4, particularly illustrating the slides forming a detail of the invention.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary elevational view of certain parts of the mechanism as seen from line 77 of Figure 3.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale of the final formof the grinding wheel resulting from the use of the truing or trimming mechanism illustrated in the drawings.
Throughout the several views of the drawings similar reference characters are employed to denote the same or similar parts.
As noted above, the truingmechanism is adapted to be used in connection with grinding machines which may consist of a bed or base 10 a spindle 14 supporting for movement therewith a grinding wheel 15. The final form of the grinding wheel 15 is illustrated in Figure 8,'and has.
the sides 16 and 17 thereof tapering toward one another, the former terminating in a round nose 18 of a radius indicated by the arrow A, while the latter has a larger rounded portion 19. indicated by the radius arrow B. It is to be under stood that these radii may be 'varied, as will later appear.
The mechanism for so forming the grinding wheel consists of a base plate 20 secured as by cap screws, or the like, 21 to the carriage 12, and the said base plate has formed therein a V-shaped guideway 22 receiving a corresponding ly shaped tongue or guide 23 depending from the main'slide 24. The base plate 20 has s cured to its forward end a plate 25, see Figure 3, in which is journaled a screw 26, having on one end, exteriorly of the plate 25, a knob 2'7,and the said screw is held against axialmovement relative to the plate by a collar 28 integral with the screw and a nut 29 threaded thereon. The main slide 24 has depending at one end thereof a lug 3G in which is formed the internal threads cooperating with the threads of screw 26. By this means the slide 24 and parts carried thereby are actuated toward and from the grinding wheel relative to the base plate 20.
Intermediate its ends the slide 24 is provided axis of the bearing or trunnion 32 by plate 34 beneath the said bearing 32 contacting with. the adjacent portions of the base 24, and-a b t 35 extending through the plate 34 into the 32. The guide plate 33, see Figure 5, is 811mb neled to provide bearing faces 36 on which is supported supplemental slide 3'? which has along each side thereof a flange 38 contacting with the said bearing faces 36. Plates 39 are secured by any suitable means, such as bolts 40, to the sides of the guide plate 34 and overlie the flanges 38 of the supplemental slide 37, thereby preventing inadvertent disass'ociation of the supplementary slide 37 and guide 33. As seen in Figures 5 and 6, the guide 33 is provided with a pair of pockets 41 in which are mounted-springs 42 contacting at their lower ends with the base of the pockets,
and at their upper ends with pendants 43 secured as by cap screws 44 to the rearmost end of the supplementary slide 37. From this it will be seen that springs 41 tend to shift the slide 37 to the right, as seen in Figures 3, 4 and 6, which movement is limited by an end plate 45 secured by bolts, or the like, 46 to the outer face of the guide member 33 against which the pendants 43 are yieldingly held. 4
The supplementary slide 37 is provided intermediate its ends with an opening. or bore 46a receiving a bearing lug or trunnion 47 depending from oscillatable plate 48. The forward end of the said supplementary slide 37 is provided with an opening 49 for affording ample clearance for the grinding wheel during the operation of the truing device. As seen in Figure 4, the plate 48 is slightly more than a semi-circle, and is provided near its ends and spaced about 180 degrees apart with pins 50 and" 51, for a pur-.- pose which will later appear. The oscillatory movement of the plate 48 relative to the supplementary slide 37 is limited by contact pins 52 and 53 adapted to engage the cut oil or flat face 54 of the said plate 48.
Superimposed on the plate 48 is the tiuing tool support 55 which has integral therewith and extending from its forward face an ear or lug 56 through which a cap screw, or the like, 57 extends. The axis of the cap screw or bolt 57 is eccentric to the axis of the bearing lug or trunnion 47, as clearly illustrated-in Figure 3. A lug or projection 58 extending from the block 55 has threadedly mounted therein a carrier 59 carrying at one end the diamond or truing tool 60, and at the other end a. knurled adjusting knob 61; a lock nut 62 being provided for locking the diamond carrier 59' in adjusted positions. A gauge 63 is provided for definitely determining the distance between the diamond point and the face 64 of the truing tool block, which face 64 is definitely spaced as respects the axes of the trunnion bolt 57 and bearing lug or trunnion 47. A handle 65 is carriedby the block 55 for operating same, as will later appear.
As seen in Figure 3, the block 55 is maintained a in a definite position relative to the plate 48 by a spring pressed detent 66, as is the relative position between the plate 48 and the supplementary slide 37 utilizing a second spring pressed detent 67.
The relative positions of the guide 33 and 'main base 24 are likewise definitely maintained by a spring pressed plunger 68 having its reduced tip 69 received in a socket 70 formed in the guide plate 45. The spring pressed plunger itself is carried by a lug or boss 71 secured to and rising from the main slide 24.
The truing block 55 has secured to its rear face a roller, or the like, 72, see Figure 7, cooperating with a cam 73 rotatably carried by the upstanding lug 71, being pivoted thereto by a suitable pivot 74. The cam 73 is provided in one portion of its periphery with a depression 75 cooperating with the roller 72, and in a substantially diametrically opposed point with aidepression 76 cooperating with a stud 77 extending from the plate 45 carried by the guide plate 33. a i
The operation of the device is as follows: By reference to Figure 4 it will be noted that the guide plate 33, together with the parts carried.
thereby, extends at an angle to the axis of the main slide .24 and the base plate 20. The parts being held in this position by the spring pressed plunger 68 during the truing of the tapered side 16. At the commencement of the truing or trimming operation the truing tool block 55, and the parts carried thereby, are in the, ,position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 4, and at this time the springs 41 are compressed since the supplementary slide 37 will be pushed forward to the limit of its movement. vRelease of the pressure on the truing block 55, which in thedevice illustrated in the drawings is a manualpressure, permits the springs 41to expand thereby shifting the supplementary slide 37, and parts carried thereby, including the truing tool 60 to the right, as seen in Figure 4, causing the said diamond ortruing iwheel.
tool to trim and form the tapered side 16 of the At this time the truing block 55 is in a position similar to that indicated in dotted lines in Figure 4, but with the diamond point, however, at the point of the rounded nose 18 where it joins the tapered side 16. The truing tool block is now actuated about the axis of the stud 57,
whereby the small radius. nose 18 is formed. At the completion of the radius 18 the cam roller 72 is in the recess 75 of thecain plate 73 so that continued movement of the truing tool block will effect a rotation of the cam plate 73 about its axis, thereby, through the recess 76 cooperating with the stud 77, actuating the guide plate about.
the axis of the bearing trunnion 32 to incline the guide plate oppositely to that shown in Figure 4. However before the truing block is continued in its arcuate path, after having trued and formed the nose 18, the spring pressed plunger 68 is pulled outwardly to withdraw its reduced end 69 from the pocket 70 in which it was held during the truing of the tapered side 16. During the time that the guide plate 39 is being'positioned or oscillated the block 55 through its engagement with the stop stud 51, extending from the plate 48, was actuating the truing tool through an arc with the axis of the bearing lug or trunnion 47 as the determinate or point of pivotance for truing or forming the nose 19. This arc of movement of the truing tool while forming the nose i9 is a true are and is not interfered with by the shifting of the guide plate 33 because the axes of the trunnion 32 and trunnion 47 are coincident. When the diamond or truing tool 60 has completed its movement for completely forming the nose 19 it is at thebeginning of the tapered side 17 whereupon the spring pressed plunger forces its reduced end 69 into the pocket 70a for securing the parts in proper position for trimming or truing the grinding wheel.
It is to be understood that portions 18 and 19 may be formed of a greater or lesser radiusvthan A and B by simply adjusting the diamond point 60 further from or nearer the face 64 of the block '55 to thereby vary the relationship of the diamond point 60 to the axes of the bolt or stud 57 and trunnion bearing 47.
