Claims. (Cl. 198-226) This invention relates, generally to stokers and refers more particularly to underfeed stokers in which a reciprocating ram or plunger is 1' provided for feeding or advancing the fuel into the furnace.
One of the essential objects of the invention is to provide a stroke of this type in which a sectional liner is provided within the ram case for engagement with and to compensate for the ram.
Another object is to provide astoker wherein certain sections of the liner are adjustable while other sections are removable or replaceable.
' Another object is to provide a stoker wherein the adjustment of the adjustable liner sections may be readily accomplished without disturbing any part of the furnace by the actuation of suitable means accessible outside the ram case.
A further object is to provide a stoker wherein the only portion of the ram case engageable by the ram is removable so that repairs and/or replacements of such portion may be made without affecting any'other part.
Other objects, advantages and novel details of construction of'this invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings; wherein:

Referring now to the drawings, A is the front wall of a furnace, and B is a retort extending through and projecting rcarwardly. from said wall. C is a ram case in front of the wall-and having its rear end opening into and secured to the forward end of the retort, and D is a hopper for the green fuel mounted upon and discharging into the case in front of the wall A, E is a ram in the case for-feeding the fuel from the hopper D into the retort B, andF is a pusher bar movable in the retort B and fixed to a movable section G thereof for advancing the fuel longitudinally of the retort. connected to the crank portion J of a suitable drive shaft K in front of the case C. Preferably the ram E is connected by a pin L to the red I, while the bar F abuts a portion of the rod I and is connected thereto by the members 95 M, N, O, P and Q respectively, described in detail in my companion application filed July 30, 1932, bearing, Serial No.'627,0'72. p
In the present instance the ram E iswa'hollow casting and is substantially rectangular in configuration. The top and bottom walls 1 and 2 respectively thereof are parallel and have openings 3 and 4 respectively therein for the reception of the pitman rod I, while the front wall 5 is square and has an opening 6 that receives the pusher bar F. The side walls 7 and 8 respectively, are also parallel and are provided adjacent their rear ends with inwardly extending tubular portions 9 and 10 respectively that receive and constitute bearings for the pin L. The 0 side walls 7 and 8 are also provided with the longitudinally and vertically extending reinforcing ribs 11 and 12, respectively, and have openings 13 and 14, respectively, therein affording access to the connections between the pusher bar F and the link members M. V
The case 0 for the ram is a casting and is mounted upon suitable supports Band 16, respectively, in front of the wall A. The upper wall 17 of the case is provided adjacentits rear end with an opening 18 and is provided about the edges of said opening with an upwardly extending marginal flange 19 that constitutes the lower section of and a support for the hopper D. The bottom wall 20 of the case has a removable section 21 that is plate-like in form, as illustrated in Figures 14 to 16 inclusive, and constitutes a slide for the bottom wall 2 of the ram. Located within the case C is a liner having five separate sections 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 respectively for engagement with and to compensate for the ram E. As shown, these sections are -mounted upon the top and side walls of the case C and cooperate with the removable section 21 of said case to guidethe ram. Preferably the top section 22 is a cast metal plate of the configuration illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 and is adjustably comiected to the top wall 17 of the case in advance of the flange 19 by bolts 2'7 rotatably mounted in tubular screws 28 in the wall 1'? of the case. The top sections 23 and 24 are in the form ofcast metal strips, as illustrated in Figures 12 and 13, and are removably held in elongated recesses 29 and 30 respectively in the top wall 1'7 at opposite sides of the opening 18 by bolts 31 and nuts 32. The side sections 25 and '26 are also cast metal plates, as illustrated in Figures 10 and 11, and are adjustably connectedto the side walls 33 and 34 of the case by bolts 35 rotatably mounted in tubular screws 36 in said side walls.
In use the sections 22, 23 and 24 respectively of the liner are engageable with and constitute slides or guides for the top wall 3 of the ram, while the sections 25 and 26 respectively constitute slides or guides-for the side walls 'I and 8 respectively of the ram. Consequently the sections of the liner and the removable section 21 of the case are the only parts with which the ram contacts while in operation. The removable section 21 of the case is preferably fastened to the case by bolts 40 accessible from beneath the case, and the bolts 27 and 35 respectively and screws 28, 32 and 36 respectively are all accessible from outside the case, hence the liner sections may be readily adjusted as desired. As a result repairs, replacements or adjustments may be made without disturbing or affecting the case C or any other part of the stoker.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. Ina stoker, the combination with a ram case, and a ram movable in said case, of adjustable liner sections within the case forming a guide for the ram, and means for adjusting the liner sections relative to the case, including tubular members accessible outside the case and adjustable in the case against said sections, and members also accessible outside the case and rotatably mounted in the tubular members and adjustable in said sections.
2. In a stoker, a ram case having a ram passageway of substantially square cross section, the bottom wall of said passageway having a section that is removable without disturbing any other part of the case and that constitutes a slide for a ram, the side and top walls ofthe passageway being rigidly connected together and provided with an aljustable lining that constitutes a guide for the ram, said lining comprising individually movable plate-like members substantially parallel to said top and side walls, and securing means for 'the lining including means for moving said members toward and away from said top and side walls.

In a stoker, a ram case having a ram passageway, the side and top walls of the passageway being rigidly connected together and provided with an adjustable lining for engagement with the ram, said lining comprising individually movable plate-like members substantially parallel to said top and side walls, and securing means for the lining including means for moving said members toward and away from said top and side walls. 5. In a stoker, a ram case having a ram passageway in which a ram is adapted to slide and having an adjustable lining for parts of said passageway for guiding the sliding movements of the ram, the lining comprising relatively movable sections, and connections between said sections and case including means accessible outside the case for positively moving the sections toward and away from the parts aforesaid of said passageway.
6. In a stoker, a ram case having a ram passageway of substantially square cross section, the bottom wall of said passageway having a section that is removable and constitutes a slide for a ram, the top and side walls of the passageway being rigidly united and provided with an adjustable lining operable to guide the ram on said slide, said lining comprising individually movable plate-like members substantially parallel to said walls, and connections between said members and walls operable to positively adjust the respective members toward and away from said walls.

In a stoker, a ram case having a ram passageway, the top and side walls of said case being rigidly united and provided with an adjustable lining that forms a guide for a ram, said lining comprising individually movable members substantially parallel to said top and side walls, and securing means for said lining including means accessible from the outside of the case for moving said members toward and away from said top and side walls.
8. In a stoker, a ram case having a ram passageway of substantially square cross section, a section of the bottom wall of said passageway being removable without disturbing any other part of the case and constituting a slide for the ram, the top and side walls of the passageway being rigidly united and provided with individually movable liner sections for the top and side walls, and means associated with said top and side walls for positively adjusting the liner sections toward and away from said top and side walls. In a stoker, a ram case having a ram passageway of substantially square cross section, a section of the bottom wall of said passageway being removable Without disturbing any other part of the case and constituting a slide for the ram, the top and side walls of the passageway being rigidly united and provided with individually movable liner sections detachably con- 3w pen part of the case and constituting a slide for the ram, the top and side walls of the passageway being rigidly united and provided with individually movable liner sections for the top and side walls, and means for positively adjusting said liner sections toward and away from said top and side walls, including means extending transversely of both said sections and walls and accessible from the outer sides of the case.
