Description

De@ 5, 1933. H. J. wlLHoYTE FLOTING CORNER BEAD Filed Feb. 8. 1932 Hls ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 5, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application February 8,
' 2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in oating corner beads, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eiiicient in use and economical to manufacture.
It is common knowledge that the cracking of plaster in the corners vof rooms and buildings is commonly caused by the shrinking, settling or sagging of the corner studding and it is an object of this invention to provide new, improved, and inexpensive means to prevent ythe cracking of plaster in the corners of a room or building.
Another object of the invention is to4 provide new and improved means for preventing movement of the intersecting corner portions of plaster boards relative to each other should the corner studdingk adjacent said corner port-ions shrink, sag or settle.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention in use Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view on line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an element embodied in the invention; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another element embodied in the invention.
In the drawing, which illustrates a preferred and practical embodiment of the invention 1U and 11 indicate the corner studdings of a room and 12 and 13 indicate other studdings in the side walls.
My invention includes a bead or strip indicated generally at 14, formed of any 'suitable material such, for example, as metal, and shaped so Aas to fit in the corner 15 provided by the studdings ll() and 11; the bead or strip 14 including arms l16 and 1'7 in each of which is provided a-series of apertures 18.
The bead or strip 14 is supportedin the corner 15 by supporting strips or laths 19 and 20. The laths 19 have portions 21 inserted vthrough the apertures 18 in arm 16 of the strip or bead 14, these portions 21 being bent back upon the laths 19, the other ends of which are supported by and attached to the studding 11 by suitable fastening elements such as nails 22 or the like.
The laths 20 have portions 23, similar to the portions 21 and these portions 23 are inserted through the apertures 18 in arm 17 of bead or strip 14 and are bent back upon the laths 20, the other ends of which are secured to the studding 12 by suitable fastening elements such as nails 24 or the like.
1932. Serial No. 591,714
1 and .2.the end portion 26a of the plaster boardy 26 fits between the clips 25 and the arm 17 of the strip or bead 14; the end edge 26D of the board 26 abutting the arm 16 of strip or bead 14.
A common cause o1 the cracking of plaster is the shrinkage, settling and sagging of the corner studdings 10 and 11, and consequent settling and sagging of the plaster board such as 26 and 27 over which the plaster is laid. It is to be noted that the bead or strip 14 which I provide in my invention is not attached to the corner studding 10 and l1 but ioats relatively thereto so that if these studding shrink, settle, or sag, the bead or strip 14 will be held immovable by the laths `19 and 20 and thus the end portions 26a and 27a of the plaster boards 26 and 27 will be held immovable relative to each other and to the bead or strip 14 whereby ,the plaster vlaid upon` the boards 26 and 27 will be prevented from cracking in the corner should the studdings 10 and 11 shrink, sag or settle. k
While I have illustrated and described the pre-V ferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, Without departing from the spirit of the invention. VI, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and. modiiications as come within they,
scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what ll'. claim as new and desire` to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In building construction, va strip of material including intersecting arms `for abutment against the corner studdings of a building, supporting strips each having oner end portion attached to one of said arms'and'each having its other end attached to a support, intersecting plaster boards,
one of said boards having an end edge abuttingA one of said arms, and clips on said rst-named strip for the reception of an end portion of the other of said boards.
2. In building construction, a strip of material
