li' his present invention relates to sewing machines, and more particularly to machines of this character used in the manufacture of shoes and the like and has particular reference to a combined tape and binding feeding device, whereby the tape and binding may be simultaneously sewed about the free edges of the shoe at a single operation. This device may be built as an attachment for application to a sewing machine of conventional type, or may be built into a machine as a permanent part thereof.
In the present manufacture of shoes it is customary to apply a rubberized reinforcing tape about the edges of the shoe upper and to subsequently sew a strip of binding, commonly known as French or imitation French binding, over such tape'at opposite sides of the upper material, the tape to provide a reinforcement for the edges of the shoe upper to eliminate where possible the use of the vamp stay, back seam stay as well as to reinforce the edges of slipper straps and to prevent the entire edge of the upper from stretching, and it is accordingly the purpose of the present invention to provide a machine whereby such tape and binding may be simultaneously and accurately sewed in position-at the edges of the shoe upper at a singleoperation. The binding provides a finished edge to the-work.
Reference may be made to my co-pending application Serial No.' 358,228, filed June 4th, 1929, the present case representing a continuation in part thereof.
One of the important obj ects.of the present invention is to provide a tape guide and control or take off means adapted to cooperate with means for feeding the binding material into a position for simultaneously sewing to the edge of the shoe material, said tape guide and control means embodying a step by step feed mechanism and tensioning means for the tape operatively connected with the operating means for the sewing machine whereby to control the feeding of the tape to the work inaccordance with the speed at which the machine is operated.
In reinforcing the tape is not always laid flush and in alignment with the edge of the work. This is essential if a firm, uniform edge is to be given to the work and is accomplished bymy invention in which the binding and tape are applied together.
It has been found that under prior practices, in taping around curves, the tape tends to loosen if held only by adhesive, whereas by the present invention the tape is sewed on and looseness prevented. a
A further object is to provide a device of this character of a simple and practical construction, which is compact, efficient and reliable in per-, formance, which may be detachably mounted in position upon sewing machines of conventional construction without necessitating any material changes or alteration therein and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose'for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction,combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:--

Referring now to the drawings in detail, for the purposes of illustration I have disclosed the invention upon a type of sewing machine indicated generally at 5 and which includes a supporting base 6, standard '7, horn 8, vibrator presser foot support 9 and reciprocating needle mounting 10.
The standard '7 is of a hollow construction, as more clearly, illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawkings, and within which is positioned the connecting rod 11 operated in the usual manner by the machine drive means; the lower end of said connecting rod being attached to the crank shaft 12 which extends forwardly within the horn 8.
The connecting rod 11 is connected to the crank shaft'by a bearing bracket 13, the lower section of the bracket being provided with a pair of spaced eyes 14 between which the upper end of a vertically disposed rod 15 is positioned and,
pivotally attached thereto. The lower end of the rod 15 is pivotally attached between a pair of spaced eyes 16 extending laterally from a collar 17 fixedly secured at the lower end of a-reciproeating. rod 18.
The rod 18 is reciprocably carried by a casting 19 secured within the lower portion of the standard! by a pair of attaching brackets 20. An arm 21 extends rearwardly from the casting 19 through an opening 22 at the rear of the stand ard and upon the outer end of which is supported a pair of upright tape guide rollers 23.
The guide rollers 23 are disposed in spaced parallel relation with their upper ends provided with a bridge member 24. The opening 22 in the standard 7 is of suflicient size to also permit of the-insertion of the tape 25 therethrough after the same passes between the guide rollers 23 from the tape reel (not shown) which may be supported in any suitable manner at a point adjacent the rollers 23.
The tape 25 is of a construction well known in the art for use in securing to the inner surface at the edge of a shoe upper indicated at 26 for the purpose of reinforcing such edge of the upper and the tape is rubberized or provided at one side with an adhesive as shown at 27 in order that the entire surface of the tape may adhere to material.
The tape is fed into the standard 7 and under a guide roller 28 mounted at the upper portion of the casting 19 and over a guide roller 29 journaled within an opening 30 formed in the upper end of the reciprocating rod 18. The tape being stretched between the roller 28 and the upper edge of a channel 31 and through the roller equipped end of the rod 18 the tape will be moved upwardly and downwardly during the reciprocating movement of the rod 18 when the same travels either above or below the horizontal plane of the tape.
The tape is then fed through the channel 31 which is formed at the under side of a plate 32 secured to the upper edge of the casting 19 and thence through the eye 33 of a resilient guide 34 disposed adjacent one end of a tubular guide 35 extending forwardly under the horn 8 of the machine to the forward edge thereof.
The forward edge of the tubular guide 35 is bent upwardly and around the side of the horn with the upper end of said tubular guide terminating adjacent a mouth 36 formed at one side of the throat plate 37 of the machine. As illustrated in Fig. 19, the guide 35 is an elongated member of an internal section corresponding approximately to the shape-and size of the tape passing therethrough and is provided with a compound bend adjacent one end. The friction between the tape and the guide, during passage of the tape therethrough, is suflicient to maintain the tape under slight tension between the point where it enters the guide and the feed of the machine which is adjacent the mouth of the guide thereby preventing wrinkling as the tape is attached to the work. The throat plate is of a construction well known in the art usually mounted at the outer end of the horn in operative association with the presser foot 38 and needle 39.
The tape is fed through the throat plate with its adhesive surface uppermost for engaging the under side of the material 26 as the same is fed under the presser foot and needle in a manner for sewing thereto.
The presser foot pushes the binding against the leather; the leather against the tape. and the tape against the binding and the binding against the feed, and then the feed and presser foot move or walk together in a conventional manner.
At the same time the tape is secured to the underside of the shoe material, a strip of binding material indicated at 40 is also fed into position for sewing in overlapping relation at the edge of the material, the binding 40 being fed into position with respect to the shoe material subsequent to the placing of. the tape 25 to the underside thereof 'so that the binding material will also overlap the outer edge of the tape, as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 22 of the drawings.
The binding material 400 and 40 is of a character well known in the art and is commonly known as French or imitation French binding to finish the raw edge of the work, the foregoing description relating particularly to imitation French binding.
This binding material is automatically fed to the'machine in a manner well known in the art through guides 41 into a guide 42 positioned upon the upper portion of the horn 8 adjacent the 6 coupling member 43 with the reciprocating rod' needle, after which the binding passes through a folding device shown at 43 having its discharge end positioned at the edge of the shoe material 26 for folding the binding so as to overlap both the upper and lower edges of the material ready for sewing thereto in a manner whereby a single thickness of the binding, as shown at 44, will be sewed to the outer surface of the material and a single thickness 45 will be sewed to the under surface of the material and outwardly of the tape 25 by a single row of stitching 46, which also extends through the tape so as to simultaneously secure the said tape'and binding to the edge of the shoe material.
The invention further includes means for automatically controlling the take off or withdrawal of the tape 25 from its supply and feeding thereof into sewing position and to automatically maintain a proper tension upon the tape so as to prevent wrinkling thereof or permitting the gummed side of the tape to adhere to the guide means to which the gummed tape is fed.
The casting 19 is provided with a recess 47 through which the reciprocating rod 18 is inserted, said recess providing a chamber within which to limit the movement of a coupling member 48 frictionally carried by the rod 18.
The coupling member is formed witha bore 49 through which the rod 18 is inserted and said member is also formed with a recess 50 having communication with said bore and openings of the member.
The block 51 is slidably positioned within the recess and yieldably forced against the rod by a coil spring 52 retained in the recess by a threaded plug 53 by means of which the tension of the.
spring may be regulated whereby to increase the frictional engagement of the block 51 and rod 18.
Accordingly, the coupling member 48 is adapted for vertical movement with the rod 18 until its edges engage the top or bottom portion" of. the recess 4'7 whereby its movement is arrested without interfering with the further movement of the .rod.
To one side of the coupling member 48 is attached a screw 54 inserted through an opening 55 of a reciprocating plate member 56 disposed parallel with thereciprocating member 18 and slidably disposed within'a groove 57 formed in the casting 19.
The upper end of the plate is provided with prongs 58 which are adapted to extend upwardly within the channel 31 for engaging the tape 25 and interrupting the movement thereof through said channel.
The tape is thus intermittently retained against movement during the reciprocating action of the plate member-56 and the rod 18. The position of theplate when disengaged from and engaged with the tape, is more clearly illustrated in Figs. 13 and 14 of the drawings. 1
An angular plate 59 is secured-to the casting 19 with one edge thereof inserted within the groove 57 to retain the plate 56 in position in said groove.
By reason of the frictional engagement of the 18 it will be apparent that the initial upward or downward movement of such rod will operate 'to raise or lowerthe plate 56, as the case may be, into or out of engagement with the tape 25.
Upon reaching the limit of its movement within the recess 47, the further movement of the coupling member 48 will be interrupted while the movement of the reciprocating member 18 continues. Accordingly a considerably greater throw for the member 18 is provided for than is neces-.
sary for the plate 56,
Accordingly by virtue of this added movement possible for the reciprocating member 18, the upward movement thereof will serve to initially secure the tape against movement and as the reciprocating member 18 continues in its upwa d movement a portion of the tape will be drawn inwardly of the opening '22 into the standard from its supporting reel. The initial downward movement of the reciprocating member 18-will first serve to release the plate 56 from the tape so that the same may be drawn into a position for sewing by the needle through the operation of the sewing machine and the continued down movement of the reciprocating member is permitted by slack in the tape previously drawn from the supply roll. The function of the reciprocating member will be more clearly understood from an inspection of Fig. 5 of the drawings.
In Fig. 26 the attachment is illustrated in connection with a slightly different type of machine from that of Fig. 1, although both machines are conventional except insofar as the combination thereof with the attachment is concerned.
Where the machine in Fig. 1 is adapted to form an imitation French binding, the machine of Fig. 26, is designed to produce a genuine French binding and it will'be noted that the attachment of the present invention is equally well adapted to either type of binding.
A comparison of Figs.,22, 24 and 25 will illustrate the difference between the two types of binding, it being noted that in forming the genuine French binding the binding tape 400 is stitched as at 460 to the leather 26 on the opposite side thereof from the reinforcing strip 25 and with its inside face exposed (see Fig. 24) and subsequently is turned over the edge of the leather and secured in position by means of the adhesive 270, to conceal all stitching (Fig. 25) whereas the imitation French binding is applied, U-fashion over the edge of the strip 26 and reinforcement 26 i with the stitches extending completely through the several lamihations (Fig. 22)
The sewing machine 60 of Fig. 26 isa post' machine of conventional type adapted to the formation of French binding as distinguished from the machine 60 of Fig. 1, which is designed to produce an imitation French binding and includes a support 61, a standard 62, a post 63 and ahead 64 for the presser foot and reciprocating needle mounting. The usual operating parts are provided in the standard 62. The casting 19 is attached to the machine in a manner.
similar to that indicated in Fig. 1 and the attachment is also connected to the operating parts in a similar manner.
The tape 25 is conducted through the tube 35,
around a pulley 65 and up through the post 63 'to the work. The tape 400 is at the same time being fed from any suitable source of supply to the work. Both the binding tape and reinforcingtape are fed to the work by means of the conventional feed dogs in a manner similar to Fig. 1 and stitched as illustrated in Fig. 24. The turning over of the tape 400 will, of course be effected by a separate operation.
It will accordingly be apparent that regardless of whether an imitation French binding or a. genuine French binding is being formed that the tape 25 and the tape 40 (or 400) may be simultaneously fed into position for sewing to the edge of the slipper or shoe 26 at a single operation of the machine.
It is obvious that my invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications in construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A shoe sewing machine attachment for a machine having a needle operatively mounted thereon comprising a binding material guide means and tape controlling and guide mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work by the needle, said tape controlling mechanism including a pull-01f for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said pulloff to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically.
2. A shoe sewing machine attachment comprising a binding material guide means and tape controlling and guide mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, and means operatively connecting said mechanism with the driving mechanism of the machine, said tape controlling mechanism including a pull-off for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said pull-01f to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically.
3. A shoe sewing machine of conventional type, a binding material guide means and tape controlling and guide mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, means operatively connecting the tape controlling mech anism with the machine, said tape controlling and guide mechanism, including a pull-off for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said pull-01f to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically.

In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type, a binding material guide means and tape controlling and guide mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of saidbinding material and tape to the work, means operatively connecting the tape controlling mechanism with the crank shaft of the sewing machine, said tape controlling and guide mechanism including a pull-01f for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said pull-off to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically. i
5. In combination with a sewing machine of the conventional type, having operating mecha-.
. nism including a crank shaft, a binding material guide means and tape controlling mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding material and feed the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, means operatively connecting said tape controlling mechanism to said crank shaft, said tape controlling mechanism including means for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said pull-ofi to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically.
6. In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type, a binding material guide means and a binding tape controlling mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding material and feed the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, means operatively connecting said tape controlling mechanism to the machine, said tape controlling mechanism including a pull-ofi operable to withdraw said tape from a. source of supply, and means synchronized therewith to retain the tape against movement periodically during operation of the machine.

In combination with a sewing machine of the conventional type having a work feed, and a connecting rod in the sewing machine for driving a portion thereof, a binding material guide means, and a tape controlling mechanism adapted to guide the binding and control the feed of tape respectively into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, means operatively connecting said tape controlling mechanism to the connecting rod,
. said tape controlling mechanism including means for preventing feed of the tapeto the work and for withdrawing tape from a source of supply while held against feed, during operation of the machine.
8. In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type having a connecting rod for driving a portion thereof, .a binding material guide means, and a tape controlling mechanism adapted respectively to guide the binding and control the feed of tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, means operativelyconnecting said tape control mechanism to the connecting rod, said tape controlling mechanism including a pulloff operable to withdraw said tape from a source of supply, and means'synchronized therewith to retain the tape against movement periodically during operation of the machine.

In combination with .a sewing machine of conventional type having a connecting rod for driving a portion thereof, a binding material guide means and a tape controlling mechanism adapted respectively to guide the binding and feed the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, a reciprocable member, means operatively connecting said member to said connecting rod, tape guiding means carried by said member, and reciprocable means'operatively connected to said member and arranged to periodically retain the tape against movement", said last.named means cooperating with said member for providing a step by step movement of the tape.
10. Incombination with a sewing machine of conventional type having a connecting rod for driving a portion thereof, a binding material guide means and tape controlling mechanism adapted to. respectively guide the binding material and feed the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, a reciprocable member, means operatively connecting said member to said connecting rod, tape engaging means comprising, means limiting the movement thereof, and means frictionally connecting said tape engaging means to said member for engaging and disengagingthe tape upon the initial movement of the member, said connecting means providing for the continued movement of the member independent of the tape engaging means.
11. In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type having a connecting rod for driving a portion thereof, of a binding material guide means and a tape controlling mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding and feed the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, and a combined tape controlling and tensioning means comprising a reciprocable rod operatively attached to said connecting rod and having means at one end provided with means for sliding engagement with the tape, means operatively connected with said reciprocating member for engaging the tape'and retaining the same against movement during the initial upward movement of said member, said last named means being further adapted for disengagement from the tape upon the initial downward movement of said member, and means operated by the continued downward movement of the member for tensioning the tape.
12. In combination a sewing machine having a standard provided with a horn extending forwardly thereof, a throat plate supported at the forward end of the horn in operative association with the needle and presser foot of the machine, binding material guide means carried by the horn and a tubular tape guide channel adjacent said horn, said throat plate having a guide channel opening adjacent the discharge end of the tape guide channel for receiving the tape therefrom, and means mounted within the standard and operatively connected with the machine driving mechanism. for controlling feed of the tape through said tubular guide during the feeding thereof, including means to periodically hold the work against feed through saidguide and to withdraw said tape from a source of supply.
13. In combination a sewing machine of conventional type having a standard provided with a horn extending forwardly thereof, a throat plate supported at the forward end of the horn in operative association with the needle andpresser foot of the machine, a binding material guide means carried by the horn and a tubular tape guide channel adjacent said horn, said throat plate having a guide channel opening adjacent the discharge end of the tape guide channel for receiving the tape therefrom, and means mounted within the standard and operatively connected with the machine drive mechanism for controlling feed of-the tape through said tubular guide channel during the feeding thereof, said last named means comprising a pair of reclprocable members, one of said members having the tape inserted through one end for pulling the tape transversely of its line of travel, and the other of said members having one edge engageable with the tape intermittently whereby to periodically secure the tape against movement and means frictionally connecting said members for uniform initial movement and providing for continued movement of said first named member independent of said last named member.
14. An" attachment for sewing machines of conventional type having feed mechanism, presser foot and needle mechanism comprising means to guide a binding to said feed mechanism, means to guide a reinforcing tape to said feed mechanism, and means connected to the sewing;
mechanism of the machine for periodically holding the tape against feed thereby providing a step by step movement thereof to the feed mecha;
nism whereby said tape and binding may be fed into sewing position and simultaneously sewed to the work, and means operative in synchronized relation to said holding means for withdrawing the tape from a source of supply.
15. An attachment for sewing machines of the type adapted to apply and stitch French binding to a piece of work, having feed mechanism, presser foot and needle mechanism comprising means to guide a binding to said feed mechanism, means to guide a reinforcing tape to said feed mechanism, and means connected to the sewing mechanism of the machine for periodically holding the tape against feed thereby providing a step by step movement thereof to the feed mechanism whereby said tapeand binding may befed into sewing position and simultaneously sewed to the work, and means operative in synchronized relation to said holding means for withdrawing the tape from a source of supply.
16. An attachment for sewing machines of the type adapted to apply and stitch imitation French binding to a piece of work having feed mechanism, presser foot and needle mechanism comprising means to guide a binding to said feed 100 mechanism, means to guide a reinforcingtape to said feed mechanism, and means connected to the sewing mechanism of the machine for periodically holding the tape against feed thereby providing a step by step movement thereof to the feed mechanism whereby said tape and binding may be fed into sewing position and simultaneously sewed to the work, and means operative in synchronized relation to said holding means for withdrawing the tape from a source of supply.

A shoe sewing machine attachment for a machine having a needle operatively mounted thereon comprising a binding material guide means and tape controlling and guide mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding prising a binding material guide means and tape controlling and guide mechanism adapted to 'respectively guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, and means operatively connecting the mechanism with the driving mechanism of the machine, said tape controlling and guide mechanism including means for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and means synchronized therewith for engaging and retaining the tape against movement periodically.

A shoe sewing machine attachment for a machine having a needle operatively mounted thereon comprising a binding material guide means and tape controlling and guide mechanism adapted to respectively guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work by the needle, said tape controlling mechanism including a reciprocating pull-off for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and a tape engaging and clamping member movable in synchronized relation to said pull-off member to periodically retain the tape against movement during operation of the pull-off member.
20-, A 5 .112 sewing machine of conventional type having a needle and work-feeding mechanism, a binding material guide means and tape control and guide mechanism thereon, said binding guide means and tape guide mechanisms being adapted respectively to guide binding material and tape into position for simultaneous stitching of said binding material and tape to the work, said binding means and tape guide mechanism being so positioned relative to each other as to guide the tape and binding into a position where each will have an edge flush with an edge of the work, said tape controlling mechanism including a pull off for withdrawing the tape from a source of supply, and means for actuating said pull-off intermittently to draw oif lengths of tape proportioned to accord with demands of the feeding mechanism.

A shoe sewing machine of conventional type having a needle and work feeding mechanism, a binding material guide means and tape control and guide mechanisms thereon, said binding guide means and tape guide mechanism being adapted respectively to guide binding material and tape into position for simultaneous stitching of said binding materialand tape to the work, said binding means and tape guide mechanism being so positioned relative to each other as to guide the tape and binding into a position where each will have an edge flush with an edge of the work, thereby to provide a uniform surface formed by the three edges 'over which the binding may be folded, said tape controlling mechanism including a pull oiffor withdrawing the tape from a source of supply, and means for actuating said pull-oil intermittently to draw off lengths of tape proportioned to accord with demands 'of the feeding mechanism. I

A shoe sewing machine of conventional type having a needle and work feeding mechanism, a binding material guide means, tape control and guide mechanism thereon, and a work support, said binding guide means and tape guiding mechanisms being adapted respectively to guide binding material and tapeinto position for simultaneous stitching of said binding material and tape to the work, said binding means and tape guide mechanism beingso positioned relative to each other as to guide the tape and binding respectively to opposite sides of the work and into a position where each will have an edge flush with an edge of the work, said tape controlling mechanism including a pull off for withdrawing the tape from a source of supply, and means for actuating said pull-off intermittently to draw ofi lengths of tape proportioned to accord with demands of the feeding mechanism.
23. A shoe sewing machine of conventional type having a needle, and work feeding mechanism, a binding material guide means, and tape control and guide mechanism thereon and a work support, said binding guide means and tape, guide mechanism being adapted respectively to guide binding material and tape into position for simultaneous stitching of said binding material and tape to the work, said binding means and tape guide mechanism being so positioned relative b ,me'ans for actuating said pull-oi! intermittently to draw off lengths of, tape proportioned to accord with demands of the feeding mechanism.
24. In a sewing machine having a sewing mechanism, the combination with -a work support, of a tape guiding member effective to deliver tape in a continuous length to the work, as it is fed over the work support, feeding mechanism effective to press the tape against the work and feed the work forward, and a pull ofi device acting on the tape before it is delivered to the presser member and operating during the continuing operation of the machine in timed rela-' tion with said feed mechanism to draw ofi intermittently, lengths of tape, proportioned to accord with demands of the feeding mechanism from a source of supply and to deliver said tape to the guide free of tension.
25. In a sewing machine having a sewing mechanism, the combination with a work support, of a tape guiding member to deliver tape in a continuous length to the work as it is fed over the work support, and a pull off device acting on the tape before it is delivered to the work support and operating during the continuing operation of the machine in timed relation with the sewing mechanism to draw off intermittently, lengths of tape, proportioned to accord with demands of the feeding mechanism from a source of supply and deliver said tape to the guide free of tension.
26. In a sewing machine having a sewing mechanism, the combination with a work support, of a tape guiding member to deliver tape in a continuous length to the work as it is fed over the work support, and -a pull off device acting on the tape before it is delivered to the work support, and means positively connecting said pull oif device and said sewing mechanism whereby the pull oif device will operate in synchronism with the sewing mechanism to draw oil" intermittently, lengths of tape, proportioned to accord with demands of the feeding mechanism from a source of supply and deliver said tape to the guide free of tension.
27. In combination with a sewing machine of 120 conventional type having a connecting rod for driving a portion thereof, a binding material guide means and a tape control mechanism adapted respectively to guide the binding and feed the tape into position for simultaneous 125 sewing to the work, said tape control mechanism comprising reciprocable means for simultaneously holdingthe tape against feed to the work and for withdrawing more tape from a source 0! supply, means operatively connecting said last 130 named means to said connecting rod, said reciprocable means including a member for engaging the tape, and means operatively associated with said member and cooperating therewith to provide a step by step movement of the 135 tape. An attachment for a sewing machine 0 conventional type comprising means to simultaneously apply a reinforcing tape and a binding strip to the work, means to locate said tape and 4') strip with their edges flush with theedge of thework during the applying operation, means to guide said tape into position from below the work, means to place said tape under tension, a pull-off for withdrawing said tape from a source 140 of supply, and means movable by the pull-off to engage and retain the tape against movement apply and secure a reinforcing tape and a binding strip to the work, means to locate said tape and strip flush with the edge of the work during the applying and securing operation, whereby the securing means binds both the tape and binding uniformly to the work therebetween, means to guide said tape into position from below the work, means to place said tape under tension, a pull-off for withdrawing-said tape from a source of supply, and means movable by the pull-off to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically.
30. In a sewing machine of the type adapted to bind a piece of work, means to sew a reinforcing tape to the work and to bind the work in a single operation, means to locate the tape and strip with their edges flush with the edge of the work whereby every stitch binds both, the tape and binding uniformly to the work therebetween, means to guide said tape into position from below the work, means to place said tape under tension, a pull-01f for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means movable by the pull-off to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically.
31. An attachment for a sewing machine of conventional type, having a feed mechanism, a needle mechanism operatively mounted therein, and driving means therefor comprising a binding material guide, and a tape guide adapted respectively to guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape-to the work by the needle, said feed mechanism being effective to feed the tape and binding material through the guides, means operatively connected to said drive means for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and means synchronized with said tape withdrawing means for engaging and retaining the tape against movement periodicallyas it is fed to the work by said feed mechanism.-
32. A shoe sewing machine having an operating mechanism, a binding material guide means and a tape guide means adapted respectively to guide the binding material and the tape into position for simultaneous sewing to the work, a positive acting tape control means effective to withdraw said tape from a source of supply, and including means movable under the influence of said tape withdrawing means into and out of engagement with the tape thereby to retain the tape periodically against movement, and means operatively connecting said tape control means to said operating mechanism.
33. In a sewing machine of conventional type having a feed mechanism, and a drive mechanism, including a crank shaft, a binding material guide, and a tape gui,de,adapted respectively to guide the binding material and tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, and means operatively connected to said crank shaft for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and means cooperative with said tape withdrawing means for 'engaging and retaining the tape against movement periodically as it is fed to the work ,by said feed mechanism.
34. In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type having a drive mechanism, a binding material guide means and ,a reinforcing tape pull-oft" mechanism adapted respectively to guide the binding material and control the feed of the tape into position for simultaneous sewing thereof to the work, said pull-off means for the tape being operatively connected to said drive mechanism and having means to withdraw said tape from a source of supply, and means synchronized with said tape withdrawing means for engaging and retaining the tape against movement eriodically, as it is fed through the machine.
35. In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type and having a work feeding mechanism, and driving-mechanism, including a connecting rod, a binding material guide means and a tape guide means adapted respectively to guide the binding and tape into position for simultaneous sewing thereof to the work, said feed mechanism being effective to feed the tape and binding material through the guides, a pull-olfmechanism for withdrawing said tape 1 from a source of supply and controlling feed of said tape as it is fed to the work by said feed mechanism, comprising a reciprocable member operatively connected to said connecting rod, and means carried by said member for engaging the tape, and means operatively associatedwith said member, effective to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically, thereby to produce a step by step movement of the tape.
36. In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type, having a work feeding mechanism, and a driving mechanism including a connecting rod, a binding material guide means and a tape guide means adapted respectively to guide the binding and tape into position for simultane- 10b ous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, said feed mechanism being effective to feed the tape and binding material through the guides, a pull-01f mechanism for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and controlling feed of said tape as it is fed to the work by said feed mechanism comprising a reciprocable member operatively connected to said connecting rod, tape guiding means carried by said member, and reciprocable means operatively connected to said member and located to periodically engage the tape and retain same against movement, said last named means cooperating with said member for producing a step by step movement of the tape.
37. In combination with a sewing machine of 120 conventional type having a work feeding mechanism, and a driving mechanism including a connecting rod, a binding material guide means and a tape guide means adapted respectively to guide the binding and tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the'work, said feed mechanism being effective to feed the tape and binding material through the guides, a pull-ofi mechanism for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and controlling feed of said tape as it is fed to the work by said feed mechanism comprising areciprocable member operatively connected to said connecting rod, tape engaging means, and means frictionally coimecting said tape engaging means to said member for engaging and disengaging the tape upon the initial movement of said member, said connecting means providing for the continued movement of the member independent of the tape engaging means.
38. In combination with a sewing machine of conventional type having a work feeding mechanism, and a driving mechanism including a connecting rod, a binding material guide means and a tape guide means adapted respectively to guide the binding and tape into position for simultaneous sewing of said binding material and tape to the work, said feeding mechanism being effective to feedthe tape and binding material through the guides, a pull-off mechanism'for 5 withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and controlling feed of said tape as it is fed to the work by said feed mechanism, a reciprocably actuated rod operatively attached to said connecting rod and having means at one end provided with means to slidingly engage the tape, means operatively connected with said reciprocating member for engaging the tape and retaining the same against movement during the initial upward movement of said member, said last named means being further adapted for disengagement from the tape upon the initial downward movement of said member, and said first mentioned tape engaging means being effective upon the continued downward movement of said member to withdraw said tape from the supply source. 6

In combination, a sewing machine having a standard provided with a horn extending forwardly thereof, a throat plate and feed mechanism supported at the forward end of the horn in operative association with the needle and presser foot of the machine, binding material guide means carried by the horn and a tubular tape guide channel on said horn, said throat plate having a guide channel opening adjacent the discharge end of the tape guide channel for receiving the tape therefrom, and means mounted within the standard and operatively connected with the machine drive mechanism for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and means cooperative with said tape withdrawing means for engaging and retaining the tape against movement periodically as it is fed to the work by said feed mechanism.
40. In com ination, a sewing machine of conventional type having a standard provided with a horn extending forwardly thereof, a throat plate and feed mechanism supported at the forward end of the horn in operative association with the needle and presser foot of the machine, a binding material guide means carried by the horn, and a tubular tape guide channel on said horn, said throat plate having a guide channel opening adjacent the discharge end of the tape guide channel, for receiving the tape therefrom, means mounted within the standard and operatively connected with the machine drive mechanism for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply and controlling said tape as it is fed to the work by said feed mechanism, said last named means comprising a pair of reciprocable members, one of said members having means to engage the tape at one end of the member for pulling the tape transversely of its line of travel and the other of said members having one end engageable with the tape intermittently whereby to periodically secure the tape against movement, and frictional means connecting said members for simultaneous initial movement and providing for continued movement of. said first named member independent of said last namedmember.
41. An attachment for sewing machines of conventional type having feed mechanism, a presser foot and needle mechanism comprising means to guide a binding to said feed mechanism, means to guide a reinforcing tape to said feed mechanism,.and means connected to the driving mechanism of the machine, and a pull-off mechanism for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said pull-oil to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically, and providing a step by step movement thereof to the feed mechanism whereby said tape and binding may be fed into sewing position and simultaneously sewed to the work.
42. An attachment for sewing machines of the type adapted to apply and stitch imitation French binding to a piece of work and having feed mechanism, a presser foot and needle mechanism, comprising means to guide a binding to said feed mechanism, means to guide a reinforcing tape to said feed mechanism, and means connected to the driving mechanism of the machine for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said tape withdrawing means to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically and providing a step by step movement thereof to the feed mechanism whereby said tape and binding may be fed into sewing position and simultaneously sewed to the work.
43. In combination with a sewing machine of a conventional type, having feed mechanism and needle mechanism, means to guide a binding to said feed mechanism, means to guide a reinforcing tape having adhesive on one surface, to said feed mechanism and means connected to the sewing mechanism of the machine for withdrawing said tape from a source of supply, and means operative in synchronized relation with said tape withdrawing means to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically and providing a stepby step movement thereof to the feed mechanism whereby said tape and binding may be fed' into sewing position and simultaneously sewed to the work, and means for applying pressure to said tape and work whereby to adhesively secure the tape to the work.
44. In a sewing machine, having a driving mechanism, a pull-off for removing tape from a source of supply, comprising a reciprocably' actuated rod operatively attached to said driving mechanism and having means at one end provided with means to slidingly engage the tape, means operatively connected with said reciprocating member for engaging the tape and retaining same against movement during the initial upward movement of said member, said last named means being adapted for disengagement from the tape upon the initial downward movement of said member, and said tape engaging means on the rod being effective upon the continued downward movement of said member to tension said tape.
45. In a sewing machine, having a driving mechanism, a pull-off for removing tape from a source of supply, and means cooperative with the pull-off, to engage and retain the tape against movement periodically as it is fed to the machine, comprising a reciprocable member operatively connected to said driving mechanism, tape guiding means carried by said member and reciprocable means operatively connected to said member and located to periodically engage the tape and retain same against movement, said last named means cooperating with said member for producing a step by step movement of the tape.
46. In a sewing machine, having a driving mechanism, a pull-off for removing tape from a source of supply, and means cooperative with the pull-oif, to engage and retainthe tape against movement periodically as it is fed to the machine, comprising a reciprocable member operatively connected to said driving mechanism, tape engaging means, and means frictionally engaging said tape engaging means to said member for engaging and disengaging said tape upon initial movement of said member, said connecting means off, to engage and retain the tape against movewent periodically as it is fed to the machine, comprising a reciprocable member operatively connected to said driving mechanism, means carried by said member for engaginsthe tape, last means being constructed and arranged to positively grip the tape and thereby hold same against movement when engaging the tape and means operativeiy associated with said member and cooperating therewith to produce a step by step movement of the tape.
