Claims.
My invention relates to dispensing packages for rolls of flexible web material such as waxed paper, tissue paper, paper towelling and the like.
There has been considerable development in 5 the art in the provision of containers having a cut-off knife so arranged with reference to an opening in the package through which the web material may be withdrawn for dispensing, in which, after a desired length has been withdrawn,
the person using the container tears off a desired length by pulling the web against the cut-off knife. The difficulty with this type of dispensing container is that when the web has been torn off, in order to secure a finger grip on the flexible material in order to withdraw another piece, it has been necessary to pry open the container in order to grasp the end of the web.
It is the object of my invention to provide a dispensing container which is so constructed and arranged that after a desired length of web material has been torn ofi a small portion will be advanced from the dispensing opening in the package so that a subsequent piece may be readily withdrawn conveniently and without danger.
It is further my object to provide a dispensing container in which the tearing edge or knife may be applied to the cover of the container which makes the application of the knife to the blank from which the carton is made and the setting up of the container a simple operation";
The above objects and other objects to which reference will be made in the ensuing disclosure I accomplish by that certain combination and arrangement of parts, of which I have illustrated a preferred embodiment.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the cut and scored blank from which my preferred type of dispensing container is made up.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the dispensing container after it has been set up.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the set up container illustrated in Figure 2.
Referring first to the blank, I have shown an integral sheet cut and scored so as to form four enclosing walls 1, 2, 3, 4, articulated together along the lines a-a, bb, and c-c respectively. The walls 1, 2, 3 and 4, which in the example 50 shown are of similar size, have closure flaps 5, 6,
'7 and 8 respectively, the closure flaps 5 being articulated to the wall 1, the closure flaps 6 to the wall 2, the closure flaps '7 to the wall 3 and the closure flaps 8 to the wall 4. As the flaps 8 are 55 the last ones which are tucked in in the setting up of the carton, these cated at 9.
The wall portion 4 has articulated to it a tuckin flap 10, which in the setting up of the carton is tucked in after the end flaps have been inter- 0 locked. After the container has been set up from the blank it is preferable to insert a wire stitch 11 as indicated in Figure 3 to secure the overlapped flaps 5, 6 and 7 together. It will further be noted that the end flaps 6 have tongues 12 articulated thereto which may be employed to tuck in and bind the flaps 5, 6 and 7 securely together.
Articulated to the wall 1 I have shown the cover flap 13 which has a serrate cut-off knife 14 secured thereto with crimping eyelets 14a.
I provide a tongue 15 in the cover member 13 and another tongue 16 in the wall portion 14, which when the container is set up are in registry, so that by depressing the tongue 15 with the thumb or fingers the tongue 16 will also be depressed.
In setting up the container the walls 1, 2 and 3 are folded at right angles to each other and the tongues 5, 6 and 7 placed in overlapping position so with the tongue 12 folded over the overlapping flaps, and with a stitch or rivet securing the ends together. The roll of flexible material is then inserted in the container. A small end of the web is drawn upwardly and the wall member 4 with 35 the tuck-in flap 10 is then folded over so that the withdrawn piece of the web extends between the outer surface of the tuck-in flap 10 and the inner surface of the wall member 1. Tongues flaps are rounded as indi- 17 which are articulated to the cover member 13 are then tucked in inside the overlapped end flaps 5, 6 and 7. This brings the serrate knife into registry with the line of articulation c-c between the wall flap 3 and the wall flap 4, and with the length of the web which has been withdrawn extending up first between the outer surface of the flap 10 and the inner surface of the wall 1 and then between the outer surface of the wall 4 and the inner surface of the cover 13.
In employing the dispensing container the person using it holds it in the hand, withdraws a desired amount, and then before tearing off a desired length of piece the tongue 15 is depressed. This draws back a certain amount of the web material. The web is then torn off, and when the tongue 15 is released its resilience in combination with the resilience of the tongue 16 causes a small portion of the web as indicated at 18 in Figure 3 to be fed out so as to provide a finger hold for the next piece which is to be withdrawn. 0
While I have only shown one specific way of providing resilient portions 01. the walls or cover of the container which will advance a sufilcient quantity of the web to provide a finger grip for a piece to be subsequently withdrawn, other modifications in such arrangements will occur to others skilled in the art without departing from the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A dispensing carton for a rolled web or flexible material composed of a blank having four enclosing walls with interlocking end fiaps, a cover flap articulated to one of said wall members, having a member mounted at its free edge against which a desired quantity oi the web may be torn 0!! after its withdrawal from the box formed by the setting up of the four wall members, and means for feeding out a sufllcient length of the web to provide a finger grip after a desired length of piece has been torn 01!, said cover fiap being provided with tuck-in end flaps for retaining said cover flap in overlapping relation mom of said wall members, said 'means comprising a depressible tongue in said cover fiap, and a registering tongue in said wall member which is overlapped by said cover member.
2. A dispensing package for a rolled web of flexible material comprising a container having enclosing walls with a rolled web of flexible material retained within said container, said container having a cover member overlapping one of the walls of the container, and having a cutoff knife, said cover member being provided with means for withdrawing a portion of the web prior to the tearing ofif of a desired length of piece, said means being resilient so as to feed back a finger gripping portion of the web after the tear? ing ofl operation.
3. A dispensing package for a rolled web of flexible material comprising a container having enclosing walls with a rolled web of flexible material retained within said container, said container having a cover member overlapping one finger gripping portion 01' the web alter the tearing ofi operation, said means comprising a depressible tongue in said cover member with a tongue in one or the walls overlain by said cover member.
4. A dispensing carton for a rolled web of flexible material composed of a cut and scored blank set up' into a box and having a cover flap with tongues at the sides thereof for interlocking with. the box, said cover flap having a member mounted at its edge for permitting the tearing oflf of a desired quantity of the web after its withdrawal from the box, and means on said cover tor'drawing back a small portion of the web prior to the tearing oil of a desired length, said means being resilient so as to feed out a sufiicient length of web after the tearing of! of a piece to enable a person using the dispensing carton to secure a finger grip on the end of the web for its subsequent withdrawal.
5. A dispensing carton for a rolled web of flexible material composed of a cut and scored blank set up into a box and having a cover flap with tongues at the sides thereof for interlocking with the box, said cover flap having a member mounted at its edge for permitting the tearing ofl of a desired quantity of the web after its withdrawal from the box, and means on said cover for drawing back a small portion of the web prior to the I JOSEPH C.
