First, to provide an improved swivel chair which isA freely rotatable and at the' .same time the spindle is maintained in vertical position, notwithstanding` WearV resulting from use.
Second, to provide a chair having these desirable features that is simple and economical in its parts and efficient and effective in operation.

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig.3 taken atright In the embodiment illustrated I provide apedestal 2 of the spider leg type formed as an integral casting, it being preferably cast of aluminum so that it is relatively light.` Owing to the channel section of the legs and the disposition of kthe walls, the walls may be quite thin and still the structure is very strong and rigid.
The seat 3 is provided with a back 4 supported by an upright 5. The details of the seat and back form no part of this invention and are therefore not illustrated.
The pedestal is provided with a central opening having an upturned flange at its edge. The pedestalbearing member 8 is seated on this flange and has a downwardly projecting peripheral flange 9 resting on the pedestal. The bearing member has an upwardly `facing conical socket bearing coacting with the Vdownwardly facing conical bearing of the spindle bearing member or sleeve `10.
The spindle bearing member has an upwardly facing annular shoulder 13 engaged by the retaining ring 14 arranged on the pedestal bear-v ing member, the ring and the pedestal bearing member being clamped to the pedestal by the l'bolts 15, thereby rotatably supporting the spindle bearing member in upright position. The .seat spindle 16 has threaded engagement with the spindle bearing member so that the seat may be vertically adjusted.

spindle by means of the setscrew 17 which is threaded through the spindle bearing member to engage the spindle, which preferably has a longitudinal groove 18 adapted to receive the inner i end of the setscrew so that the threads ofthe spindle are not injured by the setscrew. The spindle bearing member has a sleeve-like spindle housing 19, this housing having a` windowv or opening 20 through which the spindle `may be inspected to facilitate proper positioning so that the setscrew enters the groovel.
To further facilitate adjustment the setscrew is of such length that whenV it is retracted to free the spindle it constitutes a stop coacting with the heads of the bolts 15, thereby limiting the rotation of the spindle bearing member soV that the spindle may be rotated therein to adjust it up or down as may be desired.
' By providing the conical coacting bearings on the `.pedestal .and the spindle the load on the spindlejrtends-to maintain it in vertical position and wear is uniform. h Consequently the parts maintain their relative positions for a long period of use.

Y Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a chair, the combination with a seat and a pedestal having a central opening surrounded by an upturned flange, of an annular pedestal bearing member having an upwardly facing socket bearing arranged on said flange and having a downwardly projecting fiange at its outer edge resting upon said pedestal, ay threaded seat spin dle disposed through said pedestal bearing member, a sleeve-like spindle bearing member threaded upon said spindle for adjustment thereon and having a conical bearing at its lower end coacting with said pedestal bearing member, said spindle' bearing member having an upwardly facing annular shoulder, a set-screw carried by said spindle bearing member for locking said spindle thereto, and an annular retaining member arranged on said pedestal bearing member to overhang said shoulder on said spindle bearing member.
2. In a chair, the combination with a seat and a pedestal, of a pedestal bearing member having an upwardly facing socket bearing, a threaded seat spindle disposed through said pedestal bearing member, a sleeve-like spindle bearing member threaded upon said spindle for adjustment thereon and having a conical bearing at its lower end coacting with said pedestal bearing member, said spindle bearing member having an upwardly facing annular shoulder, a setscrew carried by said spindle bearing member for locking said spindle thereto, and an annular retaining member arranged on said pedestal bearing member to overhang said shoulder on said spindle bearing member.

In a chair, the combination with a seat and a pedestal, of a pedestal bearing member having an upwardly facing socket bearing, a threaded seat spindle disposed through said pedestal bearing member, a sleeve-like spindle bearing member threaded upon said spindle for adjustment thereon and having a conical bearing at its lower end coacting with said pedestal bearing member, said spindle bearing member having an upwardly facing annular shoulder and being provided with a tubular spindle housing, a setscrew carried by said spindle bearing member for locking said spindle thereto, said spindle having a longitudinal groove adapted to receive said set-screw and said housing having an opening therein facilitating the positioning of said spindle to receive said set-screw, an annular retaining member arranged on said pedestal bearing member to overhang said shoulder on said spinv'dle bearing member, and bolts for clamping said pedestal bearing member and said retaining member to said pedestal disposed with their heads in position to constitute stops with which said set screw coacts when it is retracted to free :the spindle for limiting the rotation of the spindle bearing member and thereby facilitateV the adjustment of the spindle therein.
4. In a chair, the combination with a seat and a pedestal, of a pedestal bearing member, a
threaded seat spindle disposed through said pedestal bearing member, a spindle bearing member threaded upon said spindle for adjustment thereon and having a conical bearing coacting with said pedestal bearing member, a set-screw carried by said spindle bearing member for locking said spindle thereto, said pedestal and pedestal bearing member having an annular series of vertically alined bolt openings, and bolts arranged through said openings for clamping said pedestal bearing member to said pedestal, the upper ends of said bolts being disposed in the plane of said set screw and normally out of the path thereof to allow the spindle bearing member to rotate and to constitute stops with which said set screw coacts when it is retracted to free the spindle for limiting the rotation of the spindle bearing member and thereby facilitate the adjustment of the spindle therein.
5. In a chair, the combination with a seat and a pedestal having a central opening surrounded by an upturned flange, of an annular pedestal bearing member arranged on said ange and having a downwardly projecting flange at its outer edge resting upon said pedestal, a threaded seat spindle disposed through said pedestal bearing member, a spindle bearing member threaded upon said spindle for adjustment thereon and coacting With said pedestal bearing member, said spindle bearing member having an upwardly facing annular shoulder, and an annular retaining member arranged on said pedestal bearingv member to overhang said shoulder on said spindle bearing member.
6. A swivel chair provided with a pedestal of sheet material having a central opening surrounded by an upturned iiange, and an annular pedestal bearing member disposed on said flange and having an inner downwardly extending ange in said opening and an outer downwardly extending flange resting on said pedestal in spaced relation to said upturned ange.
