DOLLY Filed Feb. 16, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet l l Mrmss Patented Dec. 5, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOLLY Peter E. Geldhof, Syracuse, N. Y., assignor to Easy Washing Machine Corporation, Syracuse, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application February 16, 1931. Serial No. 516,074 3 Claims. (01. 259--101) This invention relates to a new and improved circular substantially fiat bottom disk or pordolly. tion 6.
In washing machines of the dolly type in In circumferentially spaced relation on porwhich the dolly is oscillated to cause agitation tions 5 and 6, I provide a plurality of radially 5 of the clothes in the washing fluid, the design of extending main vanes 7 here illustrated as three 69 the dolly itself controls to a very considerable in number. degree the speed and thoroughness of the wash- Each main vane 7 is substantially L-shaped in ing operation. form having a vertically extending upper portion 8 It is important that the dolly be so designed which projects radially from the tubular central that the clothes are subjected to a very thorough portion 5 and tapering upwardly to a point adjaagitation in the washing fluid and it is also cent the top of the post, and a radially extending important that during the washing operation portion 9 which extends vertically from the botthey be subjected to a rubbing operation in order tom portion 6 and having its upper edge inclined to facilitatethe loosening of the dirt particles slightly downwardly and outwardly with its outer 15 carried by them and their elimination from the end terminating at the edge of portion 6 and clothes themselves. inclined slightly upwardly as it extends up- The main object of my invention is to provide Wardly.

25 Other objects and advantages relate to the size, Intermediate vanes 7 and in spaced relation shape and arrangement of parts all as will more thereto I provide auxiliary vanes 10. Each vane fully appear from the following description taken 10 has an upper portion 11 similar in size and in connection with the accompanying drawings shape to the upper portion 8 of vane 'i' and a in which:- bottom portion 12 which extends radially to the 30 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved edge of the bottom portion 6. dolly. by the use of a driving mechanism such as that During this operation, the vanes 7 will engage shown and described in Patent No. 1,789,939 for the clothes and subject them to a rubbing action 50 a Washing machine issued January 20, 1931 to and at the same time Will tumble them about me as assignor to the Syracuse Washing Machine on each other. Corporation. The upper portions 11 of the vanes 10 will assist The dolly 1 comprises a vertically extending in moving the clothes in the vat and the lower tubular portion or hollow post which merges portions 12 of vanes 10 being beneath the greater 55 along gradually curved lines into the center of a portion of the clothes, will subject the clothes with which they come in contact, to a very effective rubbing operation.
During the washing operation, the clothes will change their relative position and will move not only circumferentially of the vat but up and down therein, so that all of the clothes will eventually receive the benefit of the rubbing action of the lower portion 12 of the vanes 10.
I have here shown three high vanes and three low vanes, but it willbe understood that the movement of vanes and their exact position in relation to each other may be varied if desired, although I prefer to have low vanes intermediate adjacent high vanes.
It also will be understood that the dolly 1 may be secured to the oscillating drive shaft 13 of the driving mechanism 4 in any convenient way and as one means of so securing the dolly 1 in position, tubular portion 5 a plurality of circumferentially spaced grooves 14 adapted to be engaged by splines 15 on the upper end of shaft 13.
Although I have shown and described a particular arrangement of parts and a dolly having a particular number of vanes, it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made, for although I have shown and described a specific structure and form and arrangement of parts as an exemplification of an embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to restrict myself to the exact size, shape or arrangement of parts, as various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a clothes washing machine, a dolly comprising a substantially circular disk, a hollow post rising from the central portion of the disk, a plurality of vanes extending radially from the disk and post, each of said vanes consisting of a substantially horizontal portion extending upwardly from the base and terminating in a vertical portion extending outwardly from said post,
I have shown in the upper end of the.
the vertical portion of said vanes being of substantially uniform structure and gradually decreasing in lateral extension from the horizontal portion upwardly, the horizontal portions of alternate vanes being of not more than one-half the vertical height of the corresponding portions of the remaining vanes.
2. In a clothes-washing machine, a vat having a normal fluid surface level, a dolly comprising a substantially circular flat disk mounted in said vat adjacent the bottom thereof, a central post portion rising upwardly from the disk, a lurality of primary vanes extending outwardly rrom the post portion and upwardly from the disk substantially to the normal surface level, said primary vanes extending outwardly on the surface of the disk to substantially the circumferential edge thereof, and a plurality of secondary vanes of substantially the same shape as the primary vanes interposed between alternate primary vanes, said secondary vanes being of less effective area than the primary vanes and serving to rub the clothes as they are dragged circumferentially by the primary vanes.
3. In a clothes-washing machine, a vat having a normal fluid surface level, a dolly comprising a substantially circular flat disk mounted in said vat adjacent the bottom thereof, a central post portion rising upwardly from the disk, a plurality of primary vanes, each of said primary vanes having a portion extending from said post and a portion extending upwardly from said disk, the portion of said blade extending from said post rising from the disk substantially to the normal surface level in the vat, and a plurality of secondary vanes interposed between alternate primary vanes, said secondary vanes extending outwardly from the post a lesser distance than the primary vanes and serving, when the clothes are carried circumferentially by the primary vanes, to exert a scrubbing action on the clothes.
PETER E. GELDHOF.
