Considering firstthat form of the invention which is disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be seen that 1 indicates a member of sheet material composed of two portions 2 and 3 to be folded together, said member being to that end provided with a weakened or bending zone 4 intermediate the portions indicated by 2 and 3. 5
is a substantially U-shape member one leg 6 of which is pivotally mounted on portion 2 so as to admit of the other leg 7, before portions 2 and 3 so are folded together, being swung into such position, with respect to portion 2 on which the U- shape member is mounted, as to lie between, and to be incapable of retraction from, portions 2 and 3 after they are folded together. This isdue to the fact that leg 7, in swinging into engagement with portion 2, passes over bending zone 4, a return swing of said leg over said zone being impossible after the portions are folded together. Portion 2 is provided with a latching element, here 150 a raised lip 8, into which the outer end 9, constituting a latching member of leg 7, clicks when said leg is swung inwardly. Preferably, leg .7 is somewhat resilient, this being here accomplished by giving said leg such conformation that the distance X between legs 6 and '7 is slightly. greater than the distance Y, so that as outer end!) of leg 7 passes lip 8, said leg yields slightly and then reassuines its position when it comes completely beneath said lip. After the latching element and member have been brought into engagement, portion 3 is folded back: on portion 2 thus prevent ing withdrawal of the U-shape member. Said U-shape member may be provided with weakening notches 10 so that in case of tampering the outer end of said member will break off thereby indicating that an attempt has been made to open the seal. So likewise zone 4 may be of such character than any attempt to separate portions 2 and 3 will result in breakage of the parts thus revealing the tampering. Further, portion 3 can be cut away as at 11 so that in case it should be attempted to file through leg 7 and to afterward solder it, such action will be more readily revealed by evidence of this that will be left on the exposed part 12 of portion 2. If it be desired, suitable means can be provided to lock portions 2 and 3 to each other after they are folded together. In the present instance, a body of compressible material 13 is carried by portion 2 which, when 2 and 3 are folded together, projects through opening 14 in portion 3, and can then. be flattened by pressure.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 to 11 inclusive, the construction is very similar to that previously described. Here the sheet material member is composed of two portions 15 and 16, the U-shape member 17 being pivotally mounted on 15. Portion 16 is in. a different plane from 15, but the latter has nevertheless a neck 18 in the same plane as 16, there being a weakened 9Q zone 19 between the neck and portion 16. After the U-shape member has been swung into position, portion 16 is folded back on 15, and if desired a tab 20 may be provided on 16 by means of which lip 21 can be moved out of the way while folding l5 and 16 together, after which the tab can be returned to its original position: thereby causing lip 21 to lie over portion 15.
I claim:
1. Sealing including: a blank of sheet material composed of a plurality of portions to folded together, a tab carried by one of said portions bendable with respect thereto, and a lip carried by said. tab projecting within the path of folding of portions and adapted to be moved out or" the way by bending the tab to thereby adinit of the portions being folded together and to overlie the folded portions by rebending the tab after the portions have been folded together.
2. Sealing means including: a blank of sheet .110
material composed of a plurality of portions to be folded together along the line of a weakened zone that facilitates rupture when unfolding the portions, a tab carried by one of said portions bendable with respect thereto and without detachment thereof, and a lip carried by said tab projecting'within the path of folding of said portions and adapted to be moved out of the way by bending the tab to thereby admit of the portions being folded together and to overlie the folded portions by rebending the tab after the portions have been folded together thereby also holding the folded portions together in case of accidental rupture along the line of their weakened zone.
3. Sealing means including: a blank of sheet material composed of two portions to be folded together along an intermediate bending Zen and a member consisting of two connected legs one of which is pivotally connected adjacent its outer end to one of said portions at a point remote from the intermediate zone to thereby enable the free end of the other leg, before said portions are folded together, to be swung over said bending zone into engagement with the portion on which the first-mentioned leg is mounted but incapable of a return swing after the portions are folded together.
4. Sealing means including: a blank of sheet material composed of two portions to be folded together along an intermediate bending zone, a member consisting of two connected legs one of which is pivotally connected adjacent its outer end to one of said portions at a point remote from the intermediate zone to thereby enable the free end of the other leg, before said portions are folded together, to be swung over said bending zone into engagement with the portion on which the first-mentioned leg is mounted but incapable of a return swing after the portions are folded together, and means to lock the two portions to each other after they have been folded together.
