3 claims (oi; 9H0) This. invention is a novel apparatus or machine for use in painting small objects, and. it provides mechanism wherebya'number of objects. may be rotatably mounted upon a movable carrier, which carrier when loaded with the objects can be placed upon a rotatable support, and; as the latter is rotated the objects be successively moved past-the operative point where they can be subjected to the action of the painting devices and 10 then moved on out of the way; and when all the objects have been painted the painted objects can be removed and placed to one side to permit the objects to dry, while another carrier filled with objects to be painted can be placed upon the support, sothat the painting operations may be practicallycontinuous.
The invention. further provides means whereby each of the objects to'be painted may be rotated while passing the operative point so that all parts of the object will be conveniently presented to the painting device, enabling a rapid and smooth application of paint to all surfaces of the object.
In.the. accompanying drawings is illustrated 35 one practical mechanism. embodying the invention and some. modifications, and I will describe the invention with referencetheretoto enable others to adopt and use the same; but I do not. consider the invention restricted .to the. specific constructions illustrated, and refer to the claims for the novelv features of the invention and novel combination of parts forwhich protection is desired.
In said drawings:-.- I Fig. 1 is. a front elevation of a painting booth containing my novel mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof partly broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of the support and carrier.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line i -i, Fig.3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one of the bushings.
Fig. 6 is a detail section form of the friction block.

Hub la' rests on a bearing 11; mounted on transverse bars 2a attached to the side bars of a frame? of any suitable construction in which the mechanism may be supported; Preferably this frame forms a housing or booth,
- open at its front side for ready access to the supthe carrier loaded with port and to facilitate the placing orremoval of I the carriers hereinafter referred-to. The shaftis may be rotated by any'suitable means, being preferably driven'by an. electric motor Im at its lower end, as indicated in Figs. 1 and}. V
' The carrier 3 is preferably'zo-f approximately the same exterior diameter ,asthesupport, and adapted to be placed upon the support 1. (see, Figs.
1-3). This carrier may be made of wood for purposes of lightness or may be made of metal. if preferred. As shown it is provided with transversetie bars or spokes '3a,- andhandles 3b; by
which the carrier may be readilytransported. When .the'c'arrier is annularI preferably. provide the support 1 with segmental; blocks 1e onits upper side which are adapted toenter between the spokes 3a of the carrier and engagethe inner periphery thereof, and accurately, and fixedlyon the support 1, so that the carrier will rotate. therewith. Preferablyin the 'peripheryof the carrier is an annular channel or groove 30, and in the car'- rier adjacent the groove are a number. ofspaced thus position; the carrier I bores or holes 3d in which the shanksyor supports,
of the objects A to bepaintfed may be placed as indicated in the drawings, :In Figs. 4, '7; and 8 the objectsare shown assliders', or gliderswhich' have pins a adapted to be inserted inthe legs of furniture andthe like; and the pinscan be slipped intothe holes 3d-as indicated in Figs; ,4. and 6, the holes 3d intersecting the rear edges of -the channel 3;: so that the pins can comeinto contact with a friction member hereinafteridescribedfas the carrier is rotated; and the pins will be rotated by frictional contact with such member and rotate the objects as theypass thepainting.

as shown in Figs: 1-4;, the friction member comprises a block fl which issupported ona bar 21. adjacent th abl 'lh s 'b eq ilies a n Ql ction 4a, on its side adjacent the carrier, which is curved corresponding to theperipheryof the carrier 3 and is adapted to project into the chan; nel 3c thereinandcontact withthe shanlgsfor pins aof the objectsfmounted onthe carrier. "The block 4 is yieldingly pressed inward by means of coiled springs .40. and is guided by means ofbolts 4d extending throughslotshin the blocleand its tappedintoa plateI ie .bolted to the ba r;,2f-
as shown in Fig. 4. The inner-edge of the flange 4a is preferably provided with airictional'facing; 4) of rubber, .wood, or. other suitable material ,to,
enhance the frictional, contact'with the metal shanks a of theobjects and the friction block. .1 A; are made of different'sizesand diferent diameters, according to The objects their pins (1 of. A the size of the object; and in order to hold different sized pins a properly in the carrier I provide removable interchangeable bushings, as 3s (Fig. 5), which can beinserted in the holes 3d in thecarrien Thesefbushings are non-rotatable are providedwithrbores of different diameters to suit the'different'diam'eters, of pins a. The
: construction of the parts being obvious from the illustration in the drawings.
While' the invention as shown is primarilybushings. are also provided with transverse notches 315 in their front sides which correspond .adapted for use with objects'such as A,zit'lS ob viously adapted for use with other objects, and
therefore, instead of. having holes inthe carrier as above described, the carrier might beprovided With'a number of brackets as 5 (Fig. 7) attachedfltoits'rim by'b'olts 5a or other: suitable fastenings; each bracket having a groove or chan nel 5c in itsouter surface for thereception of the projecting'lip of the friction block, and the pins of the articles above described might be inserted through'the openings in the .top and-bottom of v this channel. i
' friction disk or pinion,
