Loosely mounted upon the bolt 33 for wardly of block 30 is a bell crank lever comprising a hub portion 35, through which said bolt 33 extends, and two arms 36 and 37 disposed at substantially right angles with respect to one another. The arm 36 of the bell crank lever carries at its outer end a roll 38 preferably of relatively hard rubber freely carried upon a pin 39 and provided with a plurality of grooves 40 within which the upper edges of the glass sheets 11 fit. These grooves are adapted to be in vertical alignment with the grooves in the surfacing wheel above which said roller is located. 7
The other arm 3'? of the bell crank lever carries a weight 41 which is adjustable along the arm so as to vary the pressure of the roller 38 upon the upper edges of the glass sheets, said weight being preferably held in adjusted position by means of a set screw or the like 42. Thus, it will be readily apparent that the weight 41 normally tends to rock the bell crank lever upon bolt 33 to urge the roller 38 downwardly into engagement with the upper edges of the glass sheets. A stop 43 carried by slide block 30 is provided to engage arm 36 of the bell crank lever to limit downward movement of said roller.
As the glass sheets 11 aremoved forwardly into engagement with a grinding or polishing wheel, the respective roller 38 engaging the upper edges of the sheets is adapted to maintain said sheets in a vertical position and also in engagement with the surfacing element. By passing the bolt '33 through the hub 35 of the bell crank lever, slide block 30 and plate, 32, it will be readily seen that allof these parts can be properly secured together by a single fastening element and also secured to the vertical supporting arm 24 for vertical sliding movement with respect thereto. For instance, upon loosening the nut '34, the slide block, bell crank lever and roller can be raised or lowered as a unit and upon tightening of said nut, the above parts can be secured in the desired adjusted position.
ttached to the slide block 30 is one end of a cable 44 which runs upwardlyover pulley 28 and has secured to its opposite end a balance weight 45 which is suiiiciently heavy to counter-balance the roller 38 and associated parts during vertical adjustment thereof. With such an arrangement, it is possible for the roller 38 to be raised and lowered easily and quickly and with a considerably less degree of effort on the part of the operator. than in the event no such counterweight were used. Thus, after the nut 34 is loosened, the operator need simply exert a slight pull upon the cable 44 in the desired direction to Furcan be more readily and conveniently effected.
It is to be understood that the formof the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim: I
1. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of a grinding element having a groove formed in its periphery and adapted to partially support the glass on edge while'being ground, supporting runways at opposite sides of the grinding element cooperating therewith to guidingly support said plate of glass during grinding, a roller positioned above the plate and having a groove for receiving the upper edge of said plate therein, said roller being adapted to maintain the plate in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding element, and means for adjusting said roller vertically.
2. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of a grinding element having a groove formed in its periphery and adapted to partially support the glass on edge while being ground, supporting runways at opposite sides of the grinding element cooperating therewith to guidingly support said plate of glass during grinding, a roller positioned above the plate and having a groove for receiving the upper edge of said plate therein, said roller being adapted to maintain the plate in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding element, means by which said roller may be adjusted vertically, and means for counter-balancing the roller during vertical adjustment thereof. 3. In amachine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of a grinding element adapted to maintain the plate in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding element, means for varying the pressure exerted by the roller upon the upper edge of the plate, and means for adjusting said roller vertically.
4. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of a grinding element having. a groove formed in its periphery and adapted to partially support the glass on edge while being ground, supporting runways at opposite sides of the grinding element cooperating therewith to guidingly support said plate of glass during grinding, a roller positioned above the platev and having a groove for receiving the upper edge of said plate therein, said roller being adapted to maintain the plate in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding element, means for varying the pressure exerted by the roller upon the upper edge of the plate, means which said roller may be adjusted vertically,
and means for counter-balancing the roller dur-- ing vertical adjustment thereof.
5. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of a grinding element having a groove in its periphery and upon which the glass is partially supported on edge while being ground, supporting runways at opposite sides of the grinding means-cooperating therewith to guidingly support the plate of glass during grinding. a fixed vertical support, a slide block car- ;ried by said support, a roller carried by said slide block and adapted to rest upon the upper edge .of the plate and having agroove for receiving the said edge therein; a weight tending to normally urge the roller into engagement with the plate,-and means for adjusting the roller, slide ing ground, supporting runways at opposite sides of the grinding means cooperating therewith to guidingly support the plate of glass during grinding, a fixed vertical support, a slide block carried by said support, a roller carried by said slide block and adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the plate and having a groove for receiving the said edge therein, a weight tending to normally urge the roller into engagement with the plate, means by which said roller, slide block and weight may be adjusted vertically as a unit, and means for counter-balancing the roller, slide block and weight during vertical adjustment thereof.
'7. In a machine for grindingan edge of a plate of glass, the combination of a grinding element having a groove in its periphery and upon which the glass is partially supported on edge while being ground, supporting runways at opposite sides of the grinding means cooperating therewith to guidingly support the plate of glass during grinding, a fixed vertical support having a vertical slot therein, a slide guided 'for vertical movement in said slot, a bell crank lever pivotally carried' by said slide and including a pair of arms, aroller carried by one arm and adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the plate and having a groove 7 for receiving the said edge therein, a weight carried by the other arm and tending to normally urge the roller into engagement with the plate, and means for raising and lowering the bell crank lever and associated parts bodily vertically.
8. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of a grinding element having a groove in its periphery and upon which the glass is partially supported on edge while being ground, supporting runways at opposite sides of the grinding means cooperating therewith to guidingly support the plate of glass during grinding, a fixed vertical support having a vertical slot therein, a slide guided for vertical movement in said slot, a bell crank lever pivotally carried by said slide and including a pair of arms, a roller carried by one arm and adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the glass plate and having a groove for receiving said edge therein, a weight carried by the other arm and acting to normally urge the roller into engagementwith the glass plate, means by which the bell crank lever and associated parts may be adjusted bodily vertically, and means connected with said slide for counter-balancing said bell crank lever and associated parts during vertical adjustment thereof.
9. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of grinding means upon which the glassis partially supported on edge I while being ground, means cooperating with the grinding means for guidingly supporting said plate of glass during grinding thereof, and pivotally mounted means engaging the upper edge of the glass plate for maintaining it in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding means.
10. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of grinding means upon which the glass is partially supported on edge while being ground, means cooperating with the grinding means for guidingly supporting said plate of glass during grinding thereof, and a pivotally mounted rotatable roll engaging the upper edge of the glass plate for maintaining it in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding means.
