Claims.
My invention relates to phonographs of the business or commercial type adapted for both recording and reproducing dictation.
Phonographs of the above kind are so con- 5 structed that the recording and reproducing means thereof may be set either in a neutral position, a recording position, or a reproducing position, and such recording and reproducing means may be set at any time with respect to the record cylinder for reproducing all or any desired part of the dictation previously recorded on such record cylinder.
In using such a phonograph `or dictating machine, the operator is often interrupted, and after such interruptions he is likely to resume dictation with the recording and reproducing means in either neutral or reproducing position, in which event, no record will be made of the matter dictated. Such occurrences are naturally objectionaole because they result in wasting the operators time and often break his train of thought to such an extent as to render it diiiicult or imposible for him to recall the way in which certain matter has been previously dictated. e
The primary object of my invention is to pro vide a businessphonograph or dictating machine with improved means for eiectively preventing an operator from inadvertentlyy dictating to the machine when the recording and reproducing means is in either neutral or reproducing position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a prevention means of the above kind which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture,

Aspeciiic embodiment of my invention cor. emplates the provision of means to close the motor circuit of the machine when the recording and reproducing means is set in dictating position and to permit repeated operation of the means for clutching and unclutching the record mandrel to and from the motor which operates the same the operator when the recording and reproducing when the recording and reproducing means-is in suchl dictating position, without opening said motor circuit, to open the circuit of said motor and the clutching and unclutching means when the recording and reproducingmeans is set in neutral position, to close said circuit when' the recording and reproducing means isinitially set in reproducing position, and to openfsaid circuit upon movement of said clutching and nclutching means to'unclutching position after a single op- 65 eration of the latter to clutching position. After the single operation of the clutching and unclutching means to unclutching position, closing .of the control switch will not cause operation of l the machine and the operator willA be thereby warned not to dictate until the recording and reproducing means is set in recording position. Also, the means of the present invention will cause closing of the motor circuit so that Operation of the machine may be resumed at such time upon setting the recording and reproducing means from reproducing position to recording position or from reproducing position to neutral position and back to reproducing position. In this Way,
. the operator is prevented from leaving the recording and reproducing means in reproducing position and repeatedly operating the machine and dictating while said recording and-reproducing means is in such reproducing position.
' In accordance with my. invention, the dictating 85 machine is rendered entirely inoperative when the recording and reproducing means is in neutral position sothat the operator will be immediately aware of that fact should he'close the control switch with a view to dictating at such a time. Also, thev machine may be used at will, with repeated stops, for dictating when the recording and reproducing means is in recording position. However, according to an embodiment of my in'- vention, the machine may be used once for reproducing vpreviously recorded matter when the recording and reproducing means is set in reproducing position,y whereupon the machine is automatically rendered entirely inoperative so that vthe operator cannot then operate the ma- 10@ chine for dictating and will be reminded to set the recording and reproducing means in recording position preparatory to dictating. At the same time, after one operation of the machine for reproducing previously-recorded matter, a simi-l lar operation may be repeated by simply returning the recording and reproducing means to neutral position and then back to reproducing position, an act which again closes the motor circuit of the machine.
In case the operator should set the recording and reproducing means in reproducing position with a view to listening to matter previously dictated, and, because of interruption, should fail to ly forestall an attempt on the operators part to begin dictation at such time.
-Other objects and features of my invention will become apparent from the following,descriptionV when considered in connection with the accomy pauying drawings, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 indicates a record cylinder on the-collapsible mandrel of the phonograph, which mandrel is carried byv a shaft 6 journaled in a suitable bearing 7 mounted on the top plate 8 of the phonograph frame or cabinet. A pulley 9 is rotatably mounted in a fixed position on a stud 10 secured in a suitable bearing carried by a standard 11 provided at one end of the top plate 8, said pulley being driven by a belt 12 from a suitable motor 13 suspended from the top plate 8 of the phonograph cabinet whose body portion is indicated at 14 and encloses said motor. The mandrel and its shaft 6 are adapted .to be driven from the pulley 9 through a suitable clutch comprising the coacting clutch members 15 and 16, respectively fastened to the pulley 9 and splined on the shaft 6. The present invention is shown in connection with the Edison type of dictating machine, in which the engagement and disengagement of said clutch members and the operation of the mandrel are controlled by means including a pivoted fork 17 which engages an annular groove provided in the clutch member 16. This fork 17 is carried on the upper end of a vertical shaft 18 journaled in a bearing 19 carried by the top plate 8, the shaft 18 being extended through the top plate 8 to a position adjacent the under side of the latter where it is equipped with a crank arm 20.
Mounted on the under side of the top plate 6 is electro-magnetic motive means generally indicated at 2l and including a swinging armature yoke 22 which is operatively connected by a -connecting Arod or link 23 with the crank arm 95 2G. As is well known, the type of machine illustrated has a speaker tube 24, and on this tube adjacent its mouthpiece is a control switch 25 having contacts in circuit with the electro-magnetic motive means 21 so that the armature yoke 100 22 is normally positioned to disengage, through the operative connections described, the clutch member 16 from the clutch member 15, and thereby render vthe mandrel inoperative. Also, the control switch 25 is so constituted as to en- 165 ergize the motive means 21, when closed, whereby the armature yoke 22 is actuated for moving the clutch member 16 into engagement with the clutch member 15 and thereby cause the mandrel to be driven by motor 13, the arrangement being such that when the control switch is released the electro-magnetic motive means 21 will automatically return the clutch member 16 to unclutched position. As will be apparent from the wiring diagrams of Figures 7 to 11 inclusive, the con- 115 trol switch 25 merely controls the operation of the motive means 21, and the motor 13 is ordinarily in continuous operation when the speaker tube 24 is ofi of its supporting hook 26, said supporting hook being arranged to open the motor circuit and throw the motor 13 out of operation when the speaker tube is hung on said hook 26. Briefly stated, the control switch 25 includes a movable contact 27 normally and yieldably engaged with a stationary contact at 28125 for energizing electro magnets at 29 whereby the armature yoke 22 is normally positioned to disengage clutch member 16 from clutch member 15. The switch 25 further includes a depressible member for moving the contact 27 into engagement with a further stationary contact 30 to deenergize the magnets at 29 and simultaneously energize other magnets at 31, whereby the armature 'yoke 22 is swung to a position for engaging clutch member 16 with clutch member 15 and 135 maintaining this condition as long as the switch 25 is held to maintain the contact 27 in engagement with contact 30. Immediately upon release of the depressible member of control switch 25.
as is well known, the magnets at 29 are again 140 energized for attracting the armature 22 and returning the clutch member 16 to unclutchedV position.
Reference character 32 indicates the usual carriage or arm onwhich the combined recorder and reproducer 33 is supported, said arm being provided with bosses 34 and 35 by which it is slidably mounted on back and front rods 36 and 37, said rods being mounted in parallel relation to the mandrel shaft 6 in suitable bearings car- 15 ried by the standard 11- and a similar standard 38 carried by and at the opposite end of the top plate 8. The arm 32 is arranged to be fed along the rods 36 and 37 to cause the combination recorder and reproducer 33 to traverse the record cylinder 5 mounted on the mandrel of shaft 6, by meansI of a feed screw 39 rotatably mounted at its ends on suitable bearings which are carried by the lstandards at the ends of the top plate, and a coacting feed nut mounted at- '40 on the arm 32. The feed screw 39 is arranged to be driven at a reduced speed from the mandrel shaft 6 by means of a gear 41 fixed to the shaft 6 and a larger gear 42 secured to the feed screw and meshing with gear 41.
The setting or adjustment of the recorder and reproducer 33 with respect to the record cylinder 5 on the mandrel of shaft 6 is controlled by suitable means comprising an arm or lever 43 mounted in the bossV 35 of arm 32 and extending outwardly through a slot 44 in said boss. The front rod 37 is mounted for turning movement in its bearings, and has a longitudinally extending groove 4or keyway 45 which is engaged by a suitable key or lug, not shown, provided on the control arm or lever 43, the control lever thus having a splined connection with said front rod. The arrangement of the control arm or lever 43 and the parts associatedtherewith is such that when said arm is in aposition at the forward end oi the slot 44, corresponding to its position in Figure 8, the recorder and reproducer 33 and the parts cooperating therewith will be adjusted in recording or dictating position, so that when said arm is in the vertical position of Figures 1 and 7, the parts will be adjusted in neutral position with the recorder and reproducer mechanism in inoperative relation to the record cylinder 5 and, through suitable means not shown, with the feed nut at 40 disengaged from feed screw 39, and so that when said arm or lever 43 is in a position at the rear end of slot 44 as shown in-Figures 9 and 10, the parts will be adjusted in reproducing or listening position. Secured on the right hand end of the'front rod 37 is an arm 46 positioned at the outer side ofstandard 38 and cooperating with a pivoted finger 47 on the outer side of standard 38 for preventingremoval of the cylinder 5 from the mandrel or positioning of a cylinder on said mandrel whenever the recorder and reproducer is in either recording or reproducing position, thus insuring that the operator will elevate the styli of the'recorder and reproducer 33 from operative position out of the path of the'record at such time by setting the lever 43 in. neutral position.
The construction thus far described is that of a dictating machine of the -Edison type and constitutes, per se, no part of the present invention; and While the specific embodiments of my invention disclosed herein are designed 'for and shown as applied to such a machine, it is to be understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms and applied to dictating machines resuming use of the dictating machine will be unable to render'the same operative in the event that the latter is set or adjusted in neutral position, whereby an eiiicient warning or indication of the fact that the machine is improperly set for recording dictation in the event that the machine is set or adjusted in reproducing position, and in an embodiment of the invention to prevent more than one operation of the machine for reproducing `unless and until the control lever is operated to return the parts to either dictating or neutral position. e
The construction and arrangement of specific forms of the invention illustrated will now be described. lsuitably mounted on the dictatingv machine, preferably within the cabinet of the latter, is a switch device generally indicated at 48 and including a suitable mounting frame that may be rigidly attached by meansv of a bracket 49 to a lug 50 ordinarily provided on the under side of the top plate 8. This frame has a stationary .tubular guide 51 in which is slidably mounted a control element or rod 52 having one end operatively connected with the arm or lever 43. As shown, this operative connection may includea Bowden `wire element whose external member 53 is attached at one end as at 54 to the standard 38 adjacent the right hand end of the front rod 37, and which extends downwardly through the top plate 8 and has its other end fastened to the frame of the switch device 48 as at 55. The internal member or flexible wire 56 of this Bowden wire element is connected at one end to a crank arm 57 attached to or formed integral with the arm 46 carried by the front rod 37, the other end of said internal element or wire 56 being secured to one end of the slidable control element or rod 52 as at 58. It is thus evident that the control rod or element 52 will be moved whenever the lever 43 is operated for setting the recording and reproducing means in any of its selected positions, and that said control rod 52 will assume certain deflnite positions corresponding to the different positions in which the lever 43 is adapted to be set. Carried by the frame of the switch device 48 is a movable contact 59 connected by-means of wire 60 with one side of the motor 13. Pivotally and slidably mounted as at 61 on the frame of the switch device 48 is a lever 62 having a projecting contact element 63 arranged to cooperate with the contact 59 and connected by a wire 64 to a contact of the switch controlled by the speaker tube supporting hook 26.v The switch device is thus interposed in the motor circuit to open and close thelatter independently of the switch operated by hook 26, as and for a purpose which will presently become apparent. The contact 59 is preferably resilient and normally tensioned to spring upwardly out of engagement with contact element 63, and provided in the under side of control rod 52 is a recess 65 adapted to receive an insulating block 65 on the free end of the contact 59 and permit such movement of contact 59 away from contact element 63 when theA rod 52 is in the position which it assumes when :ever 43 is moved ics to neutral position, as shown in Figure 7. In this way, the circuit of motor 13 and the motive means 21 which controls the clutching and unclutching of the record mandrel from the motor will always be rendered inoperative or opened when the recorder and reproducer is set in neutral position. Thus, with the recorder and reproducer set in neutral position, an operation of control switch 25 will have no effect and it will be impossible to operate the machine for reception of dictation at paratory to dictation.
, of' contact 59 for` being engaged by the latter when said contact 59 is depressed by movement of the control rod 52 in either of the positions which it assumes-when the lever 43 is set to place the recorder and reproducer in dictating position or in reproducing position, such depression of contact 59 being effected by riding of the insulating block 66 out of the recess 65. Carried by the control rod 52 is a cam projection 68, and secured to the adjacent end of lever 62 is an upstanding member 69 of 'insulating material arranged in the path of the cam element 68 whereby the lever 62 is swung on its pivot in one direction upon movement of control rod 52 to the position which it assumes when the lever 43 is positioned to arrange the recorder and reproducer in dictating position. The other end of lever 62 is provided with a hook 70 arranged to cooperate with a hook member 7l operatively connected with a crank arm 72 on the lower end of shaft 18 which carries the clutch shifting fork 17. The arrangement is such that when the rod 52 is positioned with the recorder and reproducer in dictating position as shown in Figure 8, the lever 62 will be held by cam element 68 so that its hooked end is out of the path of hook element 71, thus permitting repeated clutching and unclutching of the mandrel shaft 6 from the motor 13 without throwing the motor 13 out of operation, or particularly without dsengaging contact 59 from contact element 63. It is thus apparent that under the last described conditions as illustrated in Figure 8 the circuit of the motor 13 will be closed when the speaker tube is off of hook 26, and the mandrel may be repeatedly clutched to the motor 13 so that dictation may be effected with repeated stops in the ordinary way.
In practice, the frame of the switch device 48 may be made of insulating material, and the lever 62 may be made of conducting material and fastened against a stationary plate of conducting material as at 73 which is engaged by a conducting plate or nger 74 to which the wire 64 is connected and which is mounted on a suitable insulating block 75 attached to the frame of the switch device 48. Also, the hook member 71 may be secured as at 76 to one end of a rod 77 slidably mounted in a bearing 78 carried by the frame of switch device 48, the other end of rod 77 being operatively connected with crank arm 72 by means of a bell crank lever 79 and a connecting rod 80. Thus, the hook member 71 is reciprocated each time the clutch element 16 is actuated, but the hook 70 of lever 62 is positioned out of the path of hook member "'11 by vspring 67 and cam element 68, when the recorder and reproducer is in dictating position. Thus, the relation of contact 59 and contact element 63 will not be `disturbed upon operation of clutch element 16 when the recorder and reproducer is in dictating position, and the position of lever 62 It will be noted that the hook 70 and hook member 71 are of ratchet formation or have beveled outer ends. It will further be noted that when the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position as shown in Figure 10, the cam element 68 will ride oi of the upstanding member 69 of lever 62 and permit opposite tilting of said lever 62 under the influence of spring 67, whereby the hook 70 is positioned in the path of movement of hook member 71. Thus, when the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position,the control switch 25 may be initially operated to close the circuit of motor 13 and of the electro-magnetic means 21 for actuating clutch element 16, whereby matter previously dictated may be reproduced once. However, if the recording and reproducing means is left in reproducing position and the control switch 25 is once operated for listening or reproducing and then released, the hook member '71 will ratchet past the hook 70 of lever 62 and then engage said hook 70 for shifting lever 62 against the action of spring 67 to a position wherein contact element 62 will be moved out of engagement with contact 59 as shown in Figure 19. rIhus, after one operation of the machine for reproducing previously recorded matter, the entire machine is rendered inoperative when the control switch 25 is released and the clutchelement 16 is returned to unclutching position, thus preventing further operation of the machine if the recorder and reproducer is left in reproducing position. Obviously, this will prevent use of the machine for more dictation when the recorder and reproducer is in reproducing position by reason of having been left in such position on account of interruption to the operator after once listening to matter previously recorded.. Under such conditions, depression of the movable member of' control switch 25 will fail to produce any actuation of the clutch operating means, and by reason of failure of the operator to note the noise caused by such operation of the clutch operating means, he will be immediately warned to set the recorder and reproducer in dictating position before resuming dictation.
Carried by the control rod 52 is a, second cam element 81 which is arranged to ride past the upstanding member 69 of lever 62 when the lever 43 is operated to shift the recorder and reproducer from either neutral or dictating position to reproducing position, and to ride past said member 69 in an opposite direction when the lever 43 is operated to shift the recorder and reproducer from reproducing position to either neutral or dictating position. The arrangement is such that when the cam element 8l moves past the upstanding member 69 in the last-mentioned direction, the lever 62 will be swung on its pivot to release the hook 70 from hook member rI1 and permit spring 67 to return the lever 62 to its normal position wherein the contact element 63 is disposed directly below the contacting end of contact 59, whereby said contact 59 will be caused to engage contact member 63 for closing the circuit of motor 13 upon return of the recorder and reproducer fromvreproducing position to recording or dictating position, and whereby the circuit of said motor will be closed upon movement of the recorder and reproducer from reproducing 145 position to either neutral or dictating position and then back to reproducing position. Accordingly, the operator may repeatedly listen to previously recorded matter, but in order to do so must shift the recorder and reproducer from repro- 150 advise or warn the operator at all times that the recorder and reproducer is in reproducing position when the control switch is actuated. For this purpose, I preferably provide a warning signal including an incandescent lamp 82 having one terminal connected by wire 83 with a further fixed contact 84 carried by controll switch 25 and arranged to be engaged by the movable contact member 27 ofthe latter when said control switch is actuated. The other terminal of lamp 82 is connected by means of wire 85 with a contact 86 arranged in the path of control rod 52 and arranged to engage a stationary contact 87. but norvmally tensioned out of engagement with the latter. Thecontact 87 is connected with the return wire 64 running from the contact element 63, and the arrangement is such that whenever the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position, the control rod 52 will engage the contact 86 and move it intov engagement with contact 8-'1 so that lamp 82 will be lighted upon actuation of control switch 25. However, as the lamp 82 is included in the motor circuit, and asv it is under control of the control switch 25 and control rod 52, which rod 52 releases contact 86 and permits its disengagement automatically from contact 8'7 when the recorder and reproducer is set in either neutral or dictating position, said lamp 82 will be extinguished or unlighted when said recorder and reproducer isl in such neutral or dictating positions. lamp 821cm the speaker tube 24 adjacent the mouthpiece ofthe latter so that Whenever the speaker tube is raised in position adjacent the operator's mouth and the control switch 25 is actuated with the recorder and reproducer in reproducing position, the lighting of said lamp 82 will be surely observed and taken as a positive warning that the machine is not properly set for receiving dictation.-
` It may sometimes happen that an operator will set the recorder and reproducer in reproducing position preparatory to listening to previously recorded matter, but will be interrupted before actuating control switch 25. Should he thereafter operate control switch 25 and immediately begin dictation with the recorder and reproducer thus left in reproducing position, the lamp 82 will be lighted and give a positive warning that the machine is not properly set for receiving dictation even though the operator should fail to immediately hear the previously recorded matter being reproduced. However, while I believe that a preferable embodiment of the invention will position, and means for warning the operatorv whenever the control switch of the machine is operated for clutching the record mandrel with It is preferred to mount the the motor when the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position. A simple embodiment of the invention in its broadest aspect as thus stated is shown in Figure 11, the same including the lcontrol rod 52 operatively connected with the lever 43 as described in connection with Figures 1 to l0 inclusive, and similarly associated with the contact 59, but having the cam elements 68 and 81 omitted. Also, in this embodiment the lever 62 is omitted and a fixed contact is provided as at 63a in association with the contact -59 and in lieu of contact element 63. Further,
inv this embodiment the hook member 71 and its connections with the clutch operating means are eliminated, while the lamp 82 and its controlling elements are retained and provided in the same relation to the speaker tube, the control switch 25 and the control rod 52 as described in connection with said Figures 1 to 10 inclusive. Accordingly, parts in Figure 11 corresponding to parts inthe other gures are given similar reference characters so that an understanding thereof will be readily had. Obviously, with the construction of Figure 11, contact 59 will be moved by control rod 52 into engagement with contact 63a by control rod'52 for closing the circuit of motor 13 when the lever 43 is set to arrange the recorder Y and reproducer in reproducing or dictating position, and the recess 65 in control rod 52 will permit lthe contact 59 to disengage from contact 63a when the lever 43 is set to arrange the recorder and reproducer in neutral position. Thus, the
machine is inoperative when the recorder and reproducer is in neutral position and operative when the recorder and reproducer is in either dictating or reproducing position. At the same time, the signal 82 will be lighted when the control switch 25 is actuated and the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position to warn the operator that the machine is notproperly set 118 for receiving dictation. With this embodiment oi the invention, the machine may be operated at any time i1' the recorder and reproducer is in either dictating or reproducing position, and the signal is solely relied upon to warn the operator 120 when the recorder and reproducer is in reproducing position. Also, the only time the machine is rendered entirely inoperative is when the recorder and reproducer is in neutral position. While such an arrangement is believed to be practical and etlective, the form shown in Figures 1 to 10 inclusive is preferred as more positive under all conditions of use. vThe embodiment of Figure 11 might be preferred in case a more simplifled construction would be desirable under any existing 1 reasons.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and operation as well as i the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated bythose skilled in the art. It will also be apparent that my improved safety device as disclosed herein may be cheaply made as an accessory or attachment adapted for ready application to dictating mano chines as now constructed and in use.
The specific embodiments of my invention shown and described herein are subjecty to numerous changes-and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended'claims.
It will be noted that it is only essential that the switch device 48 be arranged to render the motive means 21 operable and inoperable, although which the motor 13 is also rendered operable and inoperable thereby.
What i claim as new is:
l. In a comercial phonograph provided with manually-controlled power-operated means to clutch and unclutch a record mandrel from its operating motor, and having a recorder and reproducer adapted to be set in recording or re-A producing positions, means to render said poweroperated means operable when the recorder and reproducer is set in recording position and to permit repeated operation of said power-operated means when the recorder an'd reproducer is so set, and to render said power-operated means operable when the recorder and reproducer is initially set in reproducing position, and means to render said power-operated means inoperable upon movement thereof to unclutching condition after a single operation of the same to clutching condition While the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position.
2. ln a commercial phonograph provided with manually-controlled power-operated means to clutch and unclutch a record mandrel from its operating motor, and having a recordervand reproducer adapted to be set in recording or neutral or reproducing positions, means to render said power-operated means operable when the recorder and reproducer is set in recording position and to permit repeated operation of said power-operated means when the recorder and reproducer is so set, to render said power-operated means inoperable when the recorder and reproducer is set in neutrai position, and to render said power-operated means operable when the recorder and reproducer is initially set in reproducing position, and means to render said power- !operated means inoperable upon movement thereof to unclutching condition after a single operation of the same to clutching condition while the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position.

In a phonograph having a recording condition and a neutral condition and a reproducing condition, and provided with a positionable conditioning device having a recording and a neutral and a reproducing position, and wherein manually-controlled electrically operated means is provided to clutch and unclutch a record mandrel from an operating motor, a switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable and inoperable, an operative connection between said conditioning device and said switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable when said conditioning device is set in recording position and when initially set in reproducing position and to render said electrically operated means inoperable when said conditioning device is set in neutral position, and means operable by said clutching and unclutching means to actuate said switch device and render said electrically operated means inoperable upon return movement of said clutching and unclutching means to unclutching position when operated with said conditioning device set in reproducing position.
6. in a phonograph having a recording condition and a neutral condition and a reproducing condition, and provided with a positionable conditioning device having a recording and a neutral and a reproducing position, and wherein manually-controlled electrically operated means is provided to clutch and unclutch a record mandrel from an operating motor, a switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable and inoperable, an operative connection between said conditioning device and said switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable when said conditioning device is set in recording position and when initially set in reproducing position and to render said electrically operated means inoperable when said conditioning device is set in -neutral position, and means operable by said clutching and unclutching means to actuate said switch device and render said electrically operated means inoperable upon return movement of said clutching and unclutching means to unclutching position when operated with said conditioning device set in reproducing position, said switch device including a movable control element having contact-controlling means to render said electrically operated means operable upon movement of said conditioning device from reproducing position to recording position or from reproduc- Aet ing position to another position and then back to reproducing. position.
7. In a phonograph having a recording condif tion anda neutral condition and a reproducing condition, and provided with a positionable conditioning'device having a recording and a neutral and a reproducing position, and wherein manually-controlled electrically operated means is provided toclutch and unclutch a record mandrel from an operating motor, a switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable and inoperable, an operative connection between said conditioning device and said switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable when said conditioning device is set in recording position and when initially set in reproducing position and torender said electrically operated means inoperable when said conditioning device is set in neutral position, and means operable by said clutching and unclutching means to actuate said switch device and render said electrically operated means in- -operable upon return movement of said clutching and unclutching means to unclutching position when operated with said conditioning device set in reproducing position, said switch device including a movable control element having contact-controlling means to render said electrically operated means operable upon movement of said conditioning device from reproducing position to recording position or from reproducing position to another position and then back to reproducing position, said operative connection between the conditioning device and the switch device including a Bowden-wire attachedto said movable control element.

In a phonograph having a recording condition and a neutral condition and a reproducing condition, and provided with a positionable con-1 ditioning device having a recording and a neutrai and a reproducing position, and wherein manually-controlled electrically operated means is provided to clutch and unclutch a record mandrel from an operating motor, a switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable and inoperable, an operative connection between said conditioning device and said switch device for rendering said electrically operated means operable when said conditioning device is set in recording position and when initially set in reproducing position and to render said electrically operated means inoperable when said 'conditioning device is set in neutral position,
and -means operable by said clutching and unclutching means to actuate said switch device and render said electrically operated means inoperable upon return movement of said clutching and unclutching means to unclutching posi-l tion when operated with said conditioning device set in reproducing position, said switch device comprising a slidable control element con- ;nected to said conditioning device and, provided with spaced cam elements and a recess, a pivotally andslidably mounted lever having a contact element and provided with a beveled hook at onc end and a projection Vat the other end, a yieldable contact element under control of said cam'elements and the recess and tensioned to normally move away from said contact element of the lever, a spring to slide said lever-in one dimirection to position its contact'element in operative-'relation to said yieldable contact element, said means operable by the clutching and unclutching means including a hook member movable past the. beveled hook of said lever to engage the same and move the lever against the tension of said spring so as to position the contact element of said lever in inoperative relation to said yieldable contact element, said spring be'- ing adapted to engage the hook of said lever with said hook member, one of said cam elements being adapted to hold the lever with its hook out of the path of the hook member when.

In a commercial phonograph, wherein a motor is provided to rotate a record mandrel, wherein manually-controlled power-operated means is provided to connect and disconnect said mandrel to and from said motor, and wherein a recorder and reproducer is provided with means to set the same in neutral or recording or reproducing positions, means operable by said setting means to render said power-operated means inoperable when said recorder and reproducer is set in` neutral position and operable when set in recording or reproducing positions, said settingv4 means including a rotatablei rod having an operating lever keyed and slidably movable thereon with the recorder and reproducer, said means to render the power-operated means operable and inoperable including a switch device, a crank arm rigid with an end of said rod, and a Bowdenwire connecting said crank. arm with said switch device.

In a phonograph having a recording condition, a neutral condition, and a reproducing condition, and provided with a positionable conditioning device, means controlled by said condi-g tioning device to render the phonograph operable any desired number of successive times while in recording condition, and means controlled by said conditioning device .to render the phonograph operable only once with each setting oi' the same in reproducing condition.

In a phonograph having arecording condition and a reproducing condition, and provided with a positionable conditioning device, means controlled by said conditioning device to render the phonograph operable any desired number of successive times while in recording condition, and means controlled by said conditioning device to vrender the phonograph operable only once with each'setting of the same in reproducing condition.

In a phonograph having a recording condition, a neutral condition, and a reproducing A condition, and provided with a positionable conditioning device, means controlled by said conditioning device to render the phonograph operable any desired number of successive times while in recording condition and inoperable when in neutral condition, means controlled by said conditioning device to render the phonograph operable only once with each setting. ofthe samel in reproducing condition, a warning device, and means controlled by said conditioning device to render said warning device operable when the phonograph is in .reproducing condition and inoperable when it is in recording or neutralposition.

In a phonograph havinga recording condition and a reproducing condition, and providedwith a positionable conditioning device, means controlled by said conditioning device to render the phonograph operable any desired number of successive times while in recording condition, means controlled by said conditioning device to render the phonograph operable only once with each setting of the same in reproducing condition, a warning device, and means controlled by said conditioning device to render said warning device operable when the phonograph is in reproducing condition and inoperable when it is in recording position. In a phonograph having a recording condition, a neutral condition, and a reproducing condition, and provided with a positionable conditioning device, means controlled by said conditioning device to render, the phonograph operable any desired number of successive times while in recording condition and to render the phonograph inoperable when in neutral condition, and means controlled by said conditioning device to render the phonograph operable only once with each setting of the same in reproducing condition.
l5. ln a commercial phonograph, wherein a motor is provided to rotate a record mandrel, wherein manually controlled means is provided to clutch and unclutch said mandrel to and from said motor, and wherein a recorder and reproducer is provided with means to set the same in neutral or recording or reproducing positions, means operableby said setting meansvto render said clutching and unclutc'hing means inoperable when the recorder and reproducer is set in `neutral position, to render said clutching and unclutching means operable when the recorder and reproducer is set in recording position and to permit repeated operation of said clutching and unclutching means when the recorder and reproducer is so set, and to render said clutching and unclutching means operable when the recorder and reproducer is initially set in reproducing position, and means to render said clutching and unclutching means inoperable upon movement thereof to unclutching condition after a single operation of the same to clutching condition while the recorder and reproducer is set in reproducing position.
