Adjusting screws 40 are threaded in the brackets 36 and are arranged to rest on the frame 16 at either side of the machine. By adjusting the screws 40 the slice unit may be moved up and down.
A slice member 44 has an upper end fastened to a member 46 by means of bolts 48 while the member 46 is secured to the leg 32 of the support by means of bolts 50. The slice 44 is preferably of relatively thin and more or less spring-like metal so that its relatively free body portion and lower edge may be bent or distorted while its upper end is fixed rigidly to the rigid support.
A plurality of adjusting bolts 52 and in spaced relation longitudinally of the support, as shown, have their lower ends connected to the slice 44 at from the lower working edge 45 thereof. Flanges such as 53 may be secured to the slice 44 and in which the bolts 52 are pinned and have been found to be suitable for connecting the bolts to the slice.
Adjusting members 54 are rotatable in the leg 30 of the support and are held against longitudinal shifting movements by collars 55 in threaded engagement therewith at the under side of the leg 30. The upper ends 56 of the rods 52 are threaded as shown so that by means of the members 54, the rods 52 are moved relative to the support. in threaded engagement with the rods 52 are provided for binding against the members 50 so as to lock the rods in adjusted positions. I
stiffening plates 53' are associated with the legs 30 and 32 of the support and in the preferred form of the invention are located at opposite ends thereof and in spaced relation therealong. These may be secured to the legs of the support in any suitable manner and are arranged to give to the support rigidity and strength whereby the support in the operation of the apparatus will not bend or flex to any appreciable extent.
The device is adapted to be associated with a Fourdrinier wire and in the operation of the apparatus the Fourdrinier wire carries the paper making material forwardly beneath the plate 44 of the device. The paper making material may change between what is known as free stuif and "slow stuff durlng'the operation of the machine. In such an event the material is likely to be of a difi'erent thickness at the central part of the wire as compared with the side parts. The amount of shake of the wire, the speed of shake with respect to the speed of the wire also may tend to bring about an uneven layer of stuff on the wire. As has been stated in some cases the Fourdrinier wire may not be flat transversely, that is it may have relatively high spots and low spots forming an uneven contour.
With the support in place as shown the lower edge 45 of the slice plate 44 may be moved at intervals by the adjusting bolts towards and away from the Fourdrinier wire or be distorted along its lower edge so as the wire, the edge being represented by 45 in Fig. 5. In this way since the edge of the slice may be made to conform to the transverse contour of the wire and overcome the difficulties above mentioned.
As will be seen the support is constructed gether it is possible to to approximate the contour of such a way as to be rigid while the slice plate is attached at one end thereto with the adjusting members disposed at substantially right angles thereto to bring about the most accurate and positive adjustment of the lower edge of the slice plate. By providing the rigid support the likelihood of bending is obviated which would eifect the adj ustment of the lower edge of the plate relative to the wire and by providing a unitary structure the device may be moved from and placed in the paper machine at will.
The form of the invention shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 will now be described.
In this case a support 60 is provided which may be tubular so as to be rigid and its ends are preferably pivoted for adjustment in some suitable manner as in frames 62 as shown. Flanges 64 may carry the ends of the support and have clamping means such as clamp collars 66 associated therewith so the support may be held in various positions of angular adjustment.
A plurality of brackets 68 are carried by the support and are adjustable longitudinally thereof being split to provide separate lugs 70. Bolts '72 extend through the lugs and nuts 73 on the ends in threaded engagement therewith function to draw the lugs together whereby the brackets may be clamped to the support in various positions of adjustment. The brackets are preferably held against rotation on the support by the key and slot connection shown, 74 representing a key in each bracket slidable in a groove 76 of the support.
A slice plate 80 which is preferably of relatively thin flexible material such as sheet metal is provided which has entrance slots 82 and longitudinal anchoring slots 84 along its upper edge.
With the nuts 73 loosened the plate may be manipulated so the bolts 72 of the brackets are passed through the slots 82 and then by moving the plate longitudinally the bolts are received in the slots 84. In this way the plate is readily removed and attached to the brackets and clamped in place thereon, facilitating the changing of one plate to another. By changing the relative position of the brackets it is possible to adapt the apparatus for machines of various widths.
Adjusting screws 90, adjusting and check members 92 and 94 respectively are associated with ears '71 of the brackets and function similarly to the structure shown in Fig. 2.
Guides 96 are associated with the lower portion of the plate 80 and are provided with grooves or slots 98, as shown, over the sides of which extend lips 100. Flanges or heads 102 are. carried by the members 90 which are receivable in the grooves of the members 96 as the plate 80 is moved longitudinally of the brackets and in this way the lower edge of the plate 80 is detachably attached I .to or disconnected from the adjusting members while its upper edge is connected to or disconnected from the brackets.
In this form of the invention the support may be turned on its axis to raise and lower the lower edge of the plate 80 while the lower edge may be adjusted by means of the members 90. Having described the invention, what it is de- United States is:

The combination of the Fourdrinier wire and side frames of a paper machine with a unitary slice device comprising, a support for rest ing on said frames having diverging leg portions, a flexible slice member attached to the end of one of said leg portions having a free end extending in a substantially parallel relation with respect to the other leg portion and a plurality of adjusting devices associated with the free end of the slice member and end of said other leg portion to move the free end of the slice member towards and away from said other leg portion.
2. The combination of the Fourdrinier wire and side frames of a paper machine with a unitary slice device comprising, a support for resting on said frames having diverging leg portions, a flexible slice member attached to the end of one of said leg portions having a free end extending in a substantially parallel relation with respect to the other leg portion, a plurality of adjusting devices associated with the free end of the slice member and end of the said other leg portion to move the free end of the slice member towards and away from said other leg portion, and reinforcing members at spaced intervals along said support extending between and secured to said leg portions.

The combination of tary slice device comprising, a support having diverging leg portions, brackets at opposite ends of the support including means for resting on said frames to position the support over the wire, a flexible slice member having a longitudinal edge secured to a longitudinal edge of one of said leg portions providing a substantially free body portion and a longitudinal rality of rotatable members in spaced relation along the longitudinal edge of the other leg portion and a plurality of screws attached to the slice member adjacent the working edge thereof and in threaded engagement with said rotatable members whereby the edge of the slice member may be deformed to align with the contour of the Fourdrinier wire.

The combination of the Fourdrinier wire and side frames of a paper machine with a unitary slice device comprising, a support having diverging leg portions, brackets at opposite ends of the support having means for resting on'said frames, a flexible slice member hav ing a longitudinal edge secured to a longitudinal edge of one of said leg portions providing a substantially free body portion and longitudinal working edge, a plurality of rotatable members in spaced relation along the longitudinal edge of the other leg portion and a plurality of screws attached to the slice member adjacent the workthereof and in threaded engagement with said rotatable members whereby the edge of the slice member may be deformed to align with the contour of the Fourdrinier wire. the said screws being disposed substantially at right an-= the plane of the slice member.

The combination or the Fourdrinier Wire and side frames of a paper machine with a unitary slice device comprising, a support having diverging leg portions, brackets at opposite ends of the support having means for resting on said frames, a flexible slice member having a longitudinal edge secured to a longitudinal edge or one of said leg portions-providing a substan tially free body portion and longitudinal working edge, a plurality of rotatable members in 'ing edge thereof and in the Fourdrinier wireand side frames of a paper machine with a uniworking edge, a pluspaced relation along the longitudinal edge of the other leg portion and a plurality of screws attached to the slice member adjacent the workthreaded engagement with said rotatable members whereby the edge of the slice member may be deformed to align with the contour of the Fourdrinier wire, members arranged in spaced relation on said frames and portions carried by said brackets coacting therewith to position the support so that the slice member is disposed at an angle relative to the wire with the working edge adjacent thereto.

The combination of the Fourdrinier wire and side frames of a paper machine with a unitary slice device comprising, a support having diverging leg portions, brackets at opposite ends of the support having means for resting on said frames, a flexible slice member having a longitudinal edge secured to a longitudinal edge of one of said leg portions providing a substantially free body portion and longitudinal working edge, a plurality of rotatable members in spaced relation along the longitudinal edge of the other leg portion and a plurality of screws attached to the slice member adjacent the working edge thereof and in threaded engagement with said rotatable members whereby the edge of the slice member may be deformed to align with the contour of the Fourdrinier wire, members arranged in spaced relation on said frames and portions carried by said brackets coacting therewith to position the support so that the slice member is disposed at an angle relative to the wire with the working edge adjacent thereto, the said means resting on the frame including members adjustable in the brackets whereby the device may be moved towards and away from the wire.

A unitary slice device comprising in combi nation, a support, a plurality of brackets thereon, a slice plate and detachable connections to said brackets along one side edge, adjusting means associated with the said brackets and detachable connections between the same and the other side edge of said plate, the said brackets being slidable along said support and provided with means to clamp the same to the support in various positions of adjustment.

A unitary slice device comprising in combi nation, a support, a plurality of brackets thereon, a slice plate and detachable connections to said brackets along one side edge, adjusting means associated with the said brackets and de tachable connectionsbetween the same and the other side edge of said plate, the said brackets being slidable along and non-rotatable relative to said support and provided with means to clamp the same to the support in various positions of ad= justment.

A slice device comprising in combination, a support, a plurality of brackets slidable but nonrotatable on said support and means to clamp the brackets thereto, adjusting screws associat ed with said brackets, a flexible slice plate hav= ing slots to receive said clamping means and de-- tachabie connections for said screws whereby said plate may be detachably secured to said brackets, the said detachable connections including grooved members on the plate receiving enlarged portions on the screws.

The combination with a supporting struc ture with an adjustable slice device comprising, a su port journalled in said supporting structure, means to clamp the support in various positions of angular adjustment, brackets adjustable along said support, a slice plate connected at one edge to said brackets and adjustable connections between the other edge of said blade and brackets, the said connections between said plate and brackets being adapted to permit the plate to be detached from the brackets.
11. The combination of the wire and side frames of a paper machine with a unitary slice device comprising, a support for resting on said frames having diverging leg portions, a flexible slice member having a longitudinal. side edge portion secured to the end of one leg portion having a free end extending therefrom in spaced relation with respect to the end of the other leg portion and a plurality of adjusting devices associated with the free end of the slice member and end of said other leg portion of the support to move the free end of the slice member towards and away from said other leg portion.

The combination of the wire and side frames of a paper machine with a unitary slice device comprising, a support for resting on said frames having diverging leg portions, a flexible slice member having a longitudinal side edge portion secured to the end of one leg portion having a free end extending therefrom in spaced relation with respect to the end of the other leg portion, a plurality of adjusting devices associated with the free end of the slice member and end of said other leg portion of the support to move the free end of the slice member towards and away from said other leg portionand stiffening members in spaced relation associated with the leg portions 0; the support.

A unitary slice device comprising in combination, a supporting member, a plurality of brackets thereon, a flexible slice plate connected at its opposite longitudinal sides to opposite sides of said brackets whereby it is supported entirely by the supporting member, the connections at one side of the plate and brackets being arranged to move the said edge towards and away from the brackets.

A unitary slice device comprising in combination, a supporting member, a plurality of bracketsthereon, a flexible slice plate connected at its opposite longitudinal sides to opposite sides of said brackets whereby it is supported entirely by the supporting member, the connections at one side of the plate and brackets being arranged to move the said edge towards and away from said brackets, the connections at the sides of said plate and brackets including disengageable parts whereby the plate may be removed from the brackets.
15. A unitary slice devicecomprising in combination, a supporting member, a plurality of split brackets slidable along the supporting member, clamping means associated with said brackets to secure the brackets to the support, adjusting screws associated with said brackets, a flexible slice plate having one marginal edge secured to said clamping means of the brackets and engageable connections associated with said adjusting screws and the other marginal edge of the plate whereby the plate may be connected to and disconnected from the brackets.
