be confined to such use but may be mounted in any position and upon any body where itwill be found serviceablef V The mounting of the cigarette and match'dise penser which is indicated as a Whole by the hue meral 2 is eifect'ed by means ofthe three supporting elements, two of which are indicated by' the numeral 3, while the third is indicated by the numeral 4. The elements 3 each consist of a disk 5 to one face of which is attached a centrally apertured lug 6.' This'disk is cemented. or otherwise suitably secured to the surface 'of the body 1 with the lug arranged so thatvthe aperture thereof will be vertically disposed and the supporting members 3 are arranged in the side by side spaced relation shown in Figure '7.
The third supporting'device which is indicated by the numeral 4 is disposed at 'a lower elevation than the devices 3, and upon a line passing mid:- way between the devices 3 as is also shown in Figure '7. This lower device comprises a disk 7 from the face ofvwhich extends a lug 8 through which a vertical passage 9 is formed. A slot 10. is formed in the forward end ,of the lug 8 and enters the passage 9 as shown'in Figures 3 and 8 and pivotally mounted in this slot 10, upon the vertical pivot pin 11 is a flat latch 12 which is normally urged to swing inwardly to extend across the passage 9 as'shown in Figure 8, by a spring 13. The outer end of the-latchlZis formed to provide the terminal'le by. means of which a hold may beobtainedfonthe. latch in order to-turn it. 1 v v The dispenser 2' comprises an elongated relatively broad flat receptacle having a bottom or back portion 15 and a front or cover portion 16. The back portion of the receptacle consists of the back wall 1'? and the top, bottom and side walls 18, 19 and 20, respectively, the side walls at their lower ends being connected together and connected with the bottom wall by the relatively low front wall 21. The back wall 17 of the back portion of the receptacle is provided with the longitudinally extending slot 22 in Which moves an arm 23 carried by a follower 24. The outer end of this arm has attached thereto a disk 25 which moves against the rear surface of the back wall 17 and prevents the arm from coming out of the slot 22. The follower 23 as shown in Figure 5 extends across the interior of the back portion of the receptacle and is of a length substantially equal to the interior width of this portion. 7
This follower rests upon the uppermost one of the cigarettes 26 when the same are placedin the receptacle, the lowermost one of the groupof cigarettes lying upon the bottom wall 19 thereof.
One side wall 20 of the bottom portion of the receptacle is provided with an opening 27, the bottom of which is flush with the top or inner surface of the bottom wall 19 and this opening is of sufiicient size to permit of the passage therethrough of the bottom one of the group of cigarettes in the receptacle.
The wall 21 has formed therein a slot 28 which is enlarged at one end as indicated at 29 and which enlarged end is located adjacent the side wall 20 opposite that in which the opening 27 is formed and this slot extends a short distance in the direction of theopening 2'7 and is disposed in a horizontal plane which passes through the center of this opening. Above this slot 28 there is attached to the wall 21 a rib 29, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
Upon the rear face of the back wall 17 there are fixed two lugs 30 which are spaced apart a distance equal to the spacing of the lugs 6 of the supporting elements 5 and each of these receptacle lugs 30 carries a'downwardly directed pin 31 which is designed for extension through the aperture in a supporting lug 6. At the lower end of the receptacle back upon the rear face and longitudinal center thereof there is fixed the lug 32 from which extends downwardly below the bottom of the receptacle the relatively long pin 33 which is tapered at its free end to facilitate its ready insertion intothe aperture of the lug of the bottom supporting member 4.
The taper of this pin enables the pin to shove the latch finger outwardly and when this pin has moved the proper distance the latch finger will engage in the notch 34 which is formed transversely thereof.
Hingedly attached to one side of the back 15 of the receptacle by the hinges 35 is the cover 16. This cover has the top wall 38 and the side wall 39 at the front edge. As shown, the front wall 3'7 of the cover portion is of materially less length than the back portion 15, terminating at its lower edgein the plane of the top edge of the wall21 of the back portion. 7
Disposed inspaced relation with the front wall 37 at the lower part thereof is an auxiliary front wall 40. which is attached tothe wall 37 bythe side flanges 41 and 42. This auxiliary wall extends downwardly below the edge of the wall 37- and when the cover of the receptacle is closed overlies the wall 21 of the. back portion. -A bottom wall or flange 43 extends across the inner face of the auxiliary wall 40 between the side flanges 41 and 42 and slidably mounted upon this flange 43 and held in place by the yoke 44 is a reciprocable bar 45. One end of this bar 45 normally positions against the inner face of the flange 41 and at this end there is formed integral therewith the laterally projecting fiat finger 46. This finger is constricted slightly adjacent its point of joinder with the bar 45 as indicatedat 46 in Figure 4 and this constricted portion extends through the slot 28 and slides therein when the cover 16 is closed upon the back portion 15 of the receptacle and when the bar 45 is shifted in one direction in the manner hereinafter described.
At the inner end of the bar 45 is an upstanding arm 47 which passes upwardly along the inner face of the auxiliary wall 40 andjoins one end of a horizontal upper bar 48 which overlies the lower bar 45 as illustrated in Figure l and which terminates in the upwardly projecting finger 49. This finger 49 extends upwardly through a slot 50 which is formed longitudinally of a flange 51 which extends transversely of the inner face of the auxiliary wall 40 adjacent the top edge thereof and this flange forms the bottom for a match receptacle which is indicated as a whole by the numeral 52. The rear wall of the receptacle 52 is indicated by the numeral 53 and integral with this rear wall are forwardly projecting top and side walls 54 and 55 respectively. 'I-iingedly at tached tothe side wall 55 which is upon the same side of the dispenser as the hinges 35 is a cover 56 for the match receptacle. The hinges 57 connect this cover with the adjacent side wall 55 and the cover is provided with a top flange 58 and a free edge flange 59, these flanges 58 and 59 voverlying the adjacent walls 54 and 55 as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3. Resilient fasteners 60 attached to the back portion of the match receptacle engage over the free edge of the cover 56 when the same is closed to hold the cover in this position and at the central part of the free edge of the cover an extension 61 is formed which provides means by which the cover can be grasped to be opened. 7
The cover 56 is provided with the vertical slot 62 through which extends a stem 63 which carries upon its outer end the head 64 and upon its inner end a follower 65 which is relatively heavy and which normally forces the matches 66 downwardly against the wall 51 which forms the bottom of the match receptacle. As shown in Figure 1 the side wall 55 of the match receptacle opposite the side adjacent which the hinges '57 are located is ofiset slightly so that the finger 49 may extend up into the receptacle behind the lowermost one of the matches 66. The side wall 55 of the receptacle to which the cover therefor is hinged is provided with an opening 67 through which a match may be ejected. This opening is at the same side of the dispenser as the opening 2"! in the side wall of the bottom portionof the cigarette receptacle so that when the bars 45 and 48 are shifted toward these openings the finger 46 upon the lower bar 45 will eject a cigarette through the opening 2'7'and the finger 49 which is upon the bar 43 will move'in the slot 50 and eject a match through theopening 67. In order to effect the operation ofthese ejector bars the vertical arm 47 has attached thereto the reduced portion 68 of a key 69 which portion'of the key extends from the outside of the auxiliary wall 46 through the horizontal slot 70 which is formed in this wall. At the'inner wthezbottom thereof for the discharge of an artiside of the wall 40 there'is disposed a coil contracting spring '71 which has one end secured to the side fiange 41 of the auxfliarywall and has its other end attached to the vertical arm 47.
This spring through its constant tendency to contract pulls upon the arm 47 and thus retains thefingered ends of the bars 45 and 48 in position respectively behind a cigarette and a match. When the cover 16 of the cigarette receptacle is in closed position the fiange 29 upon the outer face of the wall 21 positions over the ejector bar 45 and thus serves as an additional guide for this bar to insure its movement in a straight path.
Upon the outer face of the cover 56 of the match receptacle there are mounted the two spaced guides '72 between which is removably held a sheet of emery paper or any other suitable rough material 73 which will provide a striking surface for the match.
The cover or top 16 for the cigarette receptacle is held in closed position by the spring latch 74 which is attached to the bottom 15 and projects upwardly across the free edge of the cover as shown in Figures 1 and 2. In order to provide the proper clearance for the extension of the finger 47 into position behind a cigarette the lower part of the wall 20 at the free side of the bottom portion 15 is pressed outwardly slightly as indicated at '75.
From the foregoing description it will be readily apparent that the present match and cigarette dispenser may be readily mounted in working position upon a windshield by the use of the supports 3 and 4 and when so mounted a cigarette and match may be readily obtained simply by shifting the ejector bars 45 and 48 through the manipulation of the key 69. 7 It will also be readily seen that either th cigarette container or the match container may be opened for the ready replenishment of the contents .thereofand the entire dispenser may be readily removed from position or placed in position as required.
