Wl) w DDUD ` with continuous metaL also eliminates play between the parts such as" Patented Nov. 14, 1933 UNITE ST rl-ENTFICE My invention relates to railway rolling stock and consists in novel side frame structure for' freight cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a posts, diagonal braces, and a top chord, adapted to be assembled, as aV unit, with the car undery frame side sill to form a truss, structure. Such construction eliminates many of the jointspree'- rvent in the usual built up structures thereby overcoming the rrapid detrioration cause by dust and grit working into the joints between the many parts secured together and this results in greater permanence and also adds to the strength of the structure by replacing bolts and rivets The integralY structure arises from the loosening of connecting elements in the usual built up structure and also elimivhates in the preferred form of my invention, ein
bodying cast structure, a great deal of metal' otherwise required, for all of the metal used may be disposed most advantageously for a given weight `as no particular ysection need be` maintained except where required forstrength.
`These objects and others lare obtained in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is atop view ofahalf of my side frame arranged for a railway gondolacar. Figure Y2 is an elevational view of" the same half of. the 4side frame showing `also ther car wall.
Figures 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections taken substantially onithe corresponding section vlines of Figure 2, Figure 3 also including the adjacent portion of the underframe. l Figure 5 isa horioznta'l'section taken onthe line 5 5 of Figure 2 and showing the adjacent portion of the underframe.
. The'selected embodiment of my invention comprises a side frame formed in three parts including an end section l, a center section 2 (of which` come within the scope of my claims.
only one longitudinal half is shown) and an opposite end section, not shown, corresponding to section 1. Formed integrally'in each end section are a top chord 3, end post 4,' inter'mediate post 5, an inner post 24, diagonal braces 6, and a bottom tie element 7. Formed integrally withthe center section are Vertical posts 8, a top chord '9, a bottom tie member l0, anddiagOnalbraces 11, 11a, and 1lb. The top chords 3 and 9 and the` vertical posts 5, 24, and 8, 8 are of Z-cross sec- -side frame integral structure including vertical bers 7 and 10 are of angle section as shown in Figure 3. Theend post is provided with `a vertical iiange 12 for hooking over the car end boards. `The side sill 22 of the underframev mounting my side frame forms the bottom chord of the side frame girder and elements 7. and are of comparatively light construction and provided to facilitate handling the frame portion when detached from the underframe. A suitable under'- frame 'is' illustrated in co-,pending application, SerialNo. 511,062, led Jan. 211, V1931, inthe names of C. F. Frede and E.v G. Hallquist.
Each end section is secured'to the adjacent sec tion'by means of rivets or other fastening elements through the overlappingtopchordelements. 1 Chord 9l is depressed ,at its end to receive the' inner end of chord 3. Diagonal. brace 11 merges with the endY of center section top chord 9 lin a substantially square gusset 16 with flanges on'ftwo sides forming a pocket to oyerlap a simif lar gusset' on section l, and elements V16 and 17 arerivetedtogether for furtherv strengthening the joint. Each inside angle of the structure is merged in fa `reinforcing .gus'set. i
The vertical posts extend below the level of the car iioor and are secured to'v the underfrarne sill 22 -and transoms 15, Figure shows a joint betvveenan Ijshape'd transom of the underframe vand a vertical'post-B. The underframe struc-. ture shwnjisA preferably-of integralconst'ruction and includes"plfitesv 21 and ribs 20 for stiffening" the joint;
',Qbviously, other', details of construction such I as the shape ofthe lvarious members, the number `of panels in each girder section, the Vnumberof sections embraced in the. complete frame,the
type of' car in .which'myinvention is used,y and the manner of joining the partsras to 'whether rivets, bolts, or welding is used, may be varied Vwithfout departing from the spirit of my inven tion. My idea further embracesa complete side vframe formed of a single casting. I contemplate the exclusive use of all such variations as Iv claim: a 1. In a railway car side frame, two adjacent sections having top and bottom structural elements, said sections Vbeing joined together at the elements being interrupted between the adjacent lower extremities of said sections.V
' `2 A railway car side frame comprising end sections and an intermediate section, said in- 2 termediate section having a top chord, diagonal braces, vertical posts, and a bottom tie member cast integral, the diagonal braces being of channel section and the vertical posts being of Zy section.
3. A railway car side frame unit comprisingV a plurality of sections secured together, the end section thereof having vertical posts, diagonal braces, top chord, and bottom tie member all cast integral, said top chord extending beyond the inner vertical post, and an integral gusset in the angle formed by said post and the projecting portion of said chord.
4. A railway car side frame unit comprising a plurality of sections, gussets Vformedgin the upper adjacent corners of said sections positioned to overlap each other when said sections are placed together, and meansfor securing'lsaid gus?,
sets together.
5. A railway car side frame open truss unit comprising a plurality of sections each` having vertical post members, diagonal brace members,
a top chord member, and a bottom tie memberV all cast integral, the 4unit also Vincluding a gus- Asetintegral with and merging with certain of "said members to provide for attachment to a like adjacent unit.
6. In a railway car side frame unit, a plurality` of sections, each including vertical posts, diagonal ,braces, a top chord,' and a bottom tie member "formed ina single casting, said vertical posts extending below the bottom tie members for engaging the car underframe.
7. In a railway car side frame rigid truss unit,
. ran end-section having a top chord and end posts i cast integral, one of saidgend posts forming an "ture comprising end' posts,` a centerpost, Va top angle for engaging the car end wall and the other beingV arrangedu for attachment tof adjoining side wall structure.
8. A railway carV side frame unit integral strucchord, diagonal bracesextending from the lower portions of said end posts to the upper portion of said center post, the lower portions of said l.posts and diagonalsbeing arrangedfory connec- 4Y`tion to an underframeside sill.
`9. A' railway car side frame unit integral struc- V ture-comprising Aend posts, a center post, a top chord, diagonals extending from the lower por- Intion of said center` post to the,l upperv portions ""of said end posts, said top chord.v extending a substantial `distance beyond said end posts, diagonals extending from the lower portions 1 of said'fend posts Vto theendsof said chord, .and `a tie member Yconnectingsaidposts and termi-f "'nating at said end posts.
vdiagonal extending-fromthe lower end of said 1'0. In aV railway car vside frame, unit integral structure, an inner post, an outer post atop chord connecting said posts, and projecting a.
substantial distance beyond said outer post, a
inner post to the upper end of said outer post,

13. In a railway car side frame truss strucy ture, theY combination with an underframe longitudinal, of a plurality ofintegral truss castings,
and means securing said castings together at the -top only and to said underframe, whereby said vlongitudinal constitutes the bottom chord element of' each truss. v
14. In a railway car side frame, the combination of arigid trussunit including endposts, a..
top chord, diagonals, and a substantially lighter bottomtie, said chord, diagonals. and tie constituting thesole connection between saidposts,
withv an underframe, side sill secured to the.. lower portions of saidposts. and diagonals and.t constituting the bottom structural chord of said-` truss.v
l5. In a railway car side frame, the. combina'.-`
tion of a yseries of rigid truss units, Yeach having substantial end post, top chord anddiagonalele ments anda comparatively lightv bottom tie, said elements and said tie constituting the ,sole con;
nection between said endY post elements,-.with a substantial underframe side. sill, secured to the lower portions of said Aposts anddiagonalsand. constituting the bottom chord of all of said units',
