' 7 Claims. .(ol. 229-47) The principal objects of this invention are to provide any improved form of fastening device for the closure flaps of storage file cases which may be easily applied, and to provide a form of fastening device which-will co-operate with the closure flaps to reinforce and detachably lock.
in the: novel construction and arrangement of parts wherebytheadjacent edge portions of a pair of closure flaps are gripped between and held in closedrelation to 'thecase by a U-shaped fastening clip member pivotally attached-to one ofthe flaps to be swung into and out of locking the locking member to be engaged thereby and to effect a local reinforcement'of the flaps, the fastening member being pivotallysecured to one of said reinforcing members. I i
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a storage filing case showing my invention applied thereto and in a locked position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the filing case open and the locking devices swung outwardly.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one corner of the filing case showing the locking device before being swung inwardly to its locking position. I
Figure 4 is a vertical mid-sectional view through the fastening device showing the same in locked relation with the closure flaps.
Figure 5 is a perspective detail illustrating a modified form of the invention. i
In the manufacture of storage filing cases it is customary to provide some means for holding the cover flaps closed. The present invention provides a very eflicient form of fastening means for this purpose. i
In the'form of the invention shown, the case 1, which may be formed in any well known manner, preferably from heavy corrugated stock, is here shown provided with closure members inthe form of end flaps 2 and side flaps 3 and 4. Reinforcing corner pieces 4', which may be formed either of thin metal or sheet fibre, are doubled intermediate of their width and placed. over the respective end corners of the closure flap 3 so that they snugly embrace the same and form a positive reinforcement therefor.
the embraced portions of, theflap 3 and are suitably spac'ed'inwardly from the end. and side edges thereof. '1 i I f The rivets dextend through the arms 6' of the U-shaped fastening clip members 7 so that the fastening members may be swung; into'and out of vertical alignment with the reinforcing members 4. j i
A reinforcing member 8 formed similarlyto the members 4"of metal or fibre snugly em braces the end edgeof the fiap 4 so that when the flaps are swung closedas shown inFig'ure 3, with the flap 3 overlying the fiap 4, therein forcing members 8 will be positionedbelowth'e corner portions of the members 42 1 Rivets 9 or other. suita le means secure the members 8, in position. v
The gripping side members 10 of the fastening.
shown in Figures 1 and 4, the'members 4 and 8 and enclosed portions of the flaps 3 and 4 will be firmly gripped between the side members 10,
thus firmly holding the flaps in a securely locked I position.
The smooth rounded. edges 11 and 12 presentedby the reinforcing members 4' and 8 respectively will effectively guide the advance portions of the side members 10 of the clipin moving the latter to the locking position and any wear of the movable fastening member against the. flap is prevented by the presence of the members 4 and 8, which effectively take up any local strain and distribute the same over an extended area. 7
As shown Figure 3, corrugations 13 may be formed in the inner corner portion of the members 4' onthe upper face thereof and corresponding corrugations 14 are shown formed in the upper side member 10 of the fastener 7 to register with the corrugations 13 when the fastener is swung to its closed position. The inter-engageing members to or from their locked position.
It will beunderstood that many variations in the actual structure may be resorted to while still remaining within the scope of the invention and close the case. and clip members pivotally secured at the respective free corners of the overlying flap and having portions adapted to swing under the underlying flap to secure the overlying flap thereto, one of said flaps having protuber= ances forming a co-operative interlock with said pivotal slip members to lock the latter in' their flap-locking position.
2. A storage filing case having longitudinalside flaps of a width substantially equal to the width of the case and adapted to be folded one over the other, and U-shaped clip members hav ing an extension arm pivotallyfsecured to the overlying flap at a point spaced inwardly from the side and end edges thereof 'andadapte'd to be swung inwardly to embrace the corner-of the overlying flap and the underlying port-ion of the under flap to secure the same together; said U- shaped'clip members having the intermediate loop portion extended longitudinally to form a free lug therebeyond to act as 'a finger grip;
3. A storage filing case having closure flaps, re-' inforcing plates embracing adjacent portions of said closure flaps when the latter are in theirclosed position, pivotal locking means engaging the respective reinforcing members of said flaps in pressure contact to hold the same in their closed position, and means for interlocking saicl pivotal locking means and plates to retain the same in pressure contact. 7
. 4. A storage filing case having longitudinal closure flaps of a width substantially equal to the width of the case and adapted to be turned inwardly one over the other to close the case, U- shaped reinforcing corner plates embracing the corners of the uppermost flap, clip members pivotally secured to said reinforcing corner plates at a spaced distance from the end thereof, and reinforcing plates embracing the end edges of the under flaps adjacent the point of connection with the case, said fastening clips being adapted to be swung into pressure locking contact with said reinforcing plates to lock the flaps closed.
5.7A storage filing case having closure flaps, reinforcing corner pieces secured to one of said flaps, U-shaped fastening clips pivotally secured to said reinforcing corner pieces and adapted to embrace said corner pieces and the ajdacent portions of the'other flap, and means eifecting an interlock between said corner pieces and said pivotal locking members to retain the latter against accidental displacement from their locking positibi'l;
6. A storage filing case as claimed in claim 5 in which said corner pieces and pivotal locking members are provided with inter-fitting corrugations to eifect the interlock therebetween.
'7. A storage filing case having closure flaps, reinforcing plates embracing adjacent portions of said closure flaps when the latter are in their closed position, and pivotal clip members movable into and out of clamping relation with the said flaps and plates, said plates presenting a wearresisting surface on the respective flaps to prevent damage to or crushing 'of the material of the flaps in constantly moving the pivotal clips into and out of clamping relation thereto.
