2 Claims.
1 Another object of my invention is the provision of a lock of this type equipped with a pendulum bar which during the rotation of the tank assumes an inclined position and which permits an 15 opening of the tank and its cover only when it is in a strictly vertical position, i. c, When the tank comes to a perfect standstill and the pendulum bar is engaging the inner upper rim of the tank at a ri ht angle.
9 Still another object of my invention is the provision of a lock the operating lever of which can retract the lock bolts from its keeper only when supported by a support at rest to operate said bolt by the intermediary of a'rack and gear mechanism actuating a retracting link for said bolt.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a lock for the cover of rotating tanks permitting their opening only when the tank is V at a standstill to allow the operation of a movable member having a depending finger to engage abutinents formed on the lock bolt to disengage the same from its keeper.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a locking means for the covers of rotating tanks of simple and inexpensive con:- struction, yet durable and highly efiicient in oper-- ation.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.

As illustrated, in Figures 1 to 5, a tank as they are for instance used in laundries, dyeing establishments or the like, is rotated bymeans of a belt 11 from any suitable motor and has a discharge valve12.
Within this tank a basket 13 having aplurality of openings 14 is provided, the upper edge of which is equipped with an inwardly directed annular flange 15.
The tank and basket are covered by a cover 16 hinged to the tank as at 17 and carrying a keeper 18 at a pointoppositely disposed to hinge 17,
The keeper is adapted to beengaged by the bolt 19 of a lock within a casing 20 on the'tank.
The lock comprises a back-plate 21 provided with a foot bracket/'22 for securing the'plate and casing 20, to a support. The rear part of bolt 19 has an offset part 23 by means of which the bolt is guided for horizontal reciprocation in a longitudinal groove 24 in the back plate 21.
A longitudinally extending bore 25 in bolt 19 is adapted to guide a bolt 26 therein, the movements of which are controlled by a spring 27 in said bore and latch or bolt 19 is moved between the guide screws 28, 29, and 30.
A pin 31 projects from the front face of bolt 19 and is adapted to engage a substantially V- shaped notch 32 in a member 33 secured by means of a screw 34 to the back-plate.
Theshank of screw 34 carries rotatably therein a gear 35 in mesh with the teeth of a rack bar 36 arranged for vertical reciprocation in a 5 groove 37 of the rear plate;
To the lower reduced end 38 of bar 36 is pivotally attached bymeans of a screw 39 an operating lever 40 having a knee 41 formed intermediate its ends. The outer end of lever 40 is formed 0 into a handle 42 while its inner end is equipped with a stud 43 projecting therefrom, to which is movably attached the upper suitably bored end of a pendulum bar 44 prevented from slipping oil the pin by means of pin 45. 5
Rack bar 36 is guided by a screw 46, and the movements of the operating lever 40 are controlled by a spring 47 secured at one end to a pin 48 projecting from the back plate and anchored with its other end in a recess 49 in the handle part of operating lever 40. The inner face of the handle 42 forming the knee 41 is at its lower part somewhat bevelled, as at 50.
The upper end of the pendulum bar engages in a recess in the lower front part of the back plate having its rear wall 50 formed on a slant.
In operation, the bolts 19 and 53 are normally engaged with their keepers 18 and the pendulum bars 44 and 72 loosely suspended from their pins 43, '71, respectively, during the rotation of the 0 inner basket 13, if they are depressed by means of handles 42, 70, in an attempt to open the lock will glide along in an inclined position on the upper inner flange of the basket so that the operating bar will not find sufficient support to actuate the locking bars, and the locks cannot be opened. As soon, however, as the basket comes to a standstill or rest. the pendulum bars 44, '12, will be verticallyjenlaged with flange 15 at a right angle and the operating handles will find sufilcient support to open the locks, in the form illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 by lifting rack bar to operate gear 35 to operate lock 33. the inward movement of which is limited by screw 30 to engage pin 31 in its notch 32 and draw bolt 19 inwardly out of engagement with its keeper.

A rotating tank, a basket therein and a cover for said basket and tank hinged thereto at one end, and locking means for said cover comprising a casing, a back-plate on said casing having a groove, a bolt having a rear flange slidably arranged in the groove of said back plate, a pin projecting from the side of said bolt, 9. spring controlled pin on the inner end of said bolt, guides for said bolt during its sliding motion, an operating lever having an outer handle and a knee pivoted intermediate its ends, a rack bar vertically displaceable in a groove of said backplate, a gear in mesh with the teeth of said rack for engaging and disengaging the notch of a movable member with the side pin of said bolt. and a pendulum loosely connected to the inner end of said operating lever to form a support as soon as the tank comes to a standstill for supporting said lever for allowing its operation to the handle to lift said rack bar and rotating said gear to engage the notch of said member with said side pin of the bolt to draw the bolt into its unlocking position, and means to retain the parts in their normal position after each operation.
