Description
Patented Oct. 31, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 2 Claims.
The present invention relates particularly to means for automatically cleaning out the scale from an ordinary horizontal steam boiler.
As heretofore provided a boiler of the character indicated is provided with an outlet near one end at its lowermost point where a quantity of water is allowed to be blown out at more or less frequent intervals for the sole purpose of blowing out the scale accumulated in the boiler. During this process of blowing ofi, however, the
water flowing into the discharge pipe sets up the. usual whirling motion which builds up an annular.
ridge of scale about the said opening, with the result that the scale covers a large portion of the bottom of the boiler in a layer having its maximum thickness at the blow-ofi opening and of decreasing thickness as it recedes therefrom. Since this accumulation of scale decreases the efliciency of the boiler, and if allowed to remain shortens its effective life, it is customary to drain the boiler occasionally and scrape the scale away with suitable tools.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a simple and efiicient means for causing the flow of water during the blow-ofi operation to prevent the annular deposit of scale about the blow-off opening and to carry away all of the loose scale in the boiler whereby to obviate the necessity of manually scraping the same.
It is also an object to provide a means of the character indicated that will be economical to manufacture, quickly and easily installed, strong, durable, and highly efilcient in its practical application.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a transverse section through a portion of a boiler embodying my invention, as on line 1-1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through a portion of a boiler embodying my invention, as on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In the embodiment of the invention as here n disclosed, I show at 1 afiat plate provided with legs as 2 adapted to support the plate in a horizontal position on the bottom of the boiler 3 and over the blow-off opening 4. The plate 1 is held fixedly in position by means of straps 5 mounted thereon and attached as at 6 to tie rods 7. The plate is spaced from the adjacent end of the boiler as at 8, and from both sides of the same as at 9 and 10.
When a boiler is equipped as above set forth 5 the swirling motion of the water is perfectly inhibited during the blow-ofi operation, the water flowing straight toward the opening 4 from every side as indicated by the several arrows. The result of this is that no deposit of scale is 7 allowed to form around the opening 4 and consequentlythe scale brought to that point by the flowing water is carried under the plate and directly to the opening, through which it is carried away.
It is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described but one. specific embodiment of the invention, changes in form, construction, and method of application and'operation may be made within the scope of a the appended claims.
I claim: I
l. The combination with a boiler having a blow-off opening and having rods extending therethrough adjacent said opening, of a plate 5 disposed over the opening in spaced relation to the boiler walls on all sides and having supporting straps mounted thereon and connected to the said rods.
2. The combination with .a boiler having a blow-oiT opening and having rods extending therethrough adjacent said opening, of a plate disposed over the opening in spaced relation to the boiler walls on all sides and having supporting legs engaging the bottom of the boiler and supporting means connected to said rods.
