Description

Oct. 31, 1933. c. F. LUTZ 1,932,552
HINGE Filed March 23, 1931 Patented Oct. 31, 1933 UNITED STATES HINGE Charles F. Lutz, Milwaukee, Wis. Application March 23, 1931; Serial No. 524,592
1 Claim.
The present invention relates in general to an improved hinge structure, and relates more specifically to improvements in the construction and operation of a detachable hinge which is especially applicable to swinging windows, doors or the like.
Generally stated, an object of the invention is to provide an improved hinge which is simplein construction and efficient in operation.
Some of the more specific objects of the invention are as follows:
To provide an improved hinge structure which is especially applicable to swinging windows, doors or similar closures.
To provide a hinge construction wherein the fixed and movable elements may be readily and quickly detached or assembled.
To provide a hinge which is light but strong in construction, and all parts of which may be manufactured at minimum cost.
To provide a hinge assemblage, the various elements of which are interchangeable with similar parts of other assemblages, and which may be conveniently applied to a swinging closureand its supporting frame. To provide a hinge structure which is compactin construction; and which presents a neat and pleasing appearance.
To provide improved mechanism cooperable with a hinge supported closure, for maintaining the hinge and closure in various positions of adjustment.
These and other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following detailed description.
A clear conception of several embodiments of the invention and of the mode of constructing and of mainipulating hinge structures in accordance therewith, may be had by referring, to the draw- 4.0: ing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in which like reference characters designate the same or similar parts in the various views.
Fig. 1 is an outside view of a storm window or screen, having a set of the improved hinges applied to one side thereof;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the assemblage of Fig. l, the section being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l and the hinges having been omitted;
fragment of the assemblage of Fig. 1, showing the details of construction of one of the improved hinges;
Fig. 5 is a similarly enlarged vertical section through the fragment and hinge of Fig. 4, the section being taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged inside view of a fragment of the assemblage of Fig. 1, showing the details of construction of the closure latch, the view being'taken on the line 66 of Fig. 2;
' Fig. 7 is a. further enlarged horizontal section through the latch structure of Fig. 6, the section being'taken along the line '7-7 of Fig. 6; and I Fig. 8 is a fragment of a Window and supporting casing, showing a modified construction used as a window hanger. i i 7 Referring to Figs. 1 to '7 inclusive of the drawing the improved hinge has been shown as applied to the side of an ordinary casement window or screen in order to swingably support the same. Each of the improved hinges comprises in general a bracket 10 adapted for attachment to the casing 11 by means of screws 12 or the like; a hinge element '13 adapted for attachment to the screen or window frame 14 by means of screws 15 and having'a tubular portion 16 provided with end openings which are alinable with sockets 1'7 formed in the bracket 10; and an axially movable pivot 18 disposed within the tubular portion 16 of theelement 13 and having end portions movable into the sockets 17 of the bracket 10 to form a hinge connection between the bracket 10 and the element 13. Each pivot 18 is resiliently restrained against movement within the tubular portion 16, by means of a leaf spring 19, and is provided with a lateral recess 20 adapted to receive the swinging end of an arm 21. Each of the arms 21 is attached to the outer end of a pivot pin 22 by means of a clamping screw 23, and the pivot pin 22 is rotatably supported in a bore in the frame 14 and has its inner end provided with an adjusting handle 24.
In the horizontally swingable casement type of window, it is preferable to utilize two or more of the improved hinges associated with one of the side edges of the closure, and the opposite edge of the window frame may be provided with a locking or holding latch associated with the inside of the frame and casing, as shown in Figs. 1,
2, 3, 6 and 7. This latch comprises a latch bar 25 swingably supported upon the frame 14 by 05 means of a pivot bracket 26 and having an integral tongue 27 adapted to engage the adjacent portion of the casing 11 to retain the window in closed position as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The swinging portion of the bar 25 has a through pleting the hinge connections.
opening 28 cooperable with a spring clip 29 in order to retain the bar in locking position. The edge of the bar 25 may also be provided with one or more notches which are engageable with a grooved stop pin 31 secured to the casing 11, when the window is swung open and the latch bar 25 is disposed horizontally, as shown in Figs.
'2 and 3, to thereby hold the window open to any desired extent.
In the modified form of hinge or hanger shown in Fig. 8, the bracket 32 is of single construction and is secured to the casing 11 above the window frame 14. The hinge element 13 and the parts. associated therewith are identical with the corresponding structure previously described, and this modified device can be used advantageously in place of the ordinary storm Window and screen hangers which present numerous obstacles; when it is attempted to hang such closures from the inside.
Inorder to. assemble a frame is and casing. 11. having the improved hinges applied thereto, it is. only necessary to set the. pivots 18. by manipulation of the handles 24:,v so thatv the ends. of the. pivots do not project, from the, ends of thetubular IlQrtions 16 of the confining, elements 13. The springs 19. will retain thev pivots. 18 within the tubular portions 16 until the frame 14; is positioned' within the opening in the casing. 11 with the openings of the tubular portions 16. in. alinement With the sockets 17 of the adjacent bracketsv 10. The. handles 24 may then be manipulated to move the pivots 18. axially within the. tubular portions 16 until the pivot. ends. enter the adjacent sockets, as shown in Figs. 1, 4 and 8, thereby com- The windows or screens may be subsequently swung. about the pins 18 as pivots,. and with the latch. applied, may be retained in open or, closed. position. The hinge connection may obviously be readily released by manipulating the handles 24. from within the C SHIe, and. these handles may be set at any zlesirectposition.v relative to the arms 21 by means of the clamping screws 23.
It will thus be noted that the invention pro vides a simple, compact andhighly eiiicient hinge and; latch structure which may be readily ape plied and manipulated. The brackets 10, 26,. 3.2,. the elements 13, the latchbars-25, and the spring, clips 29 may be readily formed of sheet metal. with the aidof punches and dies, thereby reducing the cost of construction thereof to a minimum and permitting interchangeability of these parts. While the pivots 18 when used in connection with the double brackets 10, may be shifted axially in either direction in order to complete the hinge connection, the double brackets 10 may be replaced by single brackets 32 whenever desired. The. improved latch mechanism may or may not be used in conjunction with the. improved hinge structure and has been found extremely efiective in actual use.
It will be noted that the angular disposition of thebracket 26 which supports the latch bar 25, causes this bar to swing clear of the casing when the bar is swung about its pivot, thereby avoiding, obstruction to the opening and closing of the window or screen frame 14. The latch bar 25 however, serveslto effectively retain the window or screen in closed position when the end of the bar has been brought into locking engagement. with the clip 29.. The formation of this latch bar and the pivotal mounting thereof, constitutev an important feature of the present. invention.
It should be-understoodthat. it is-not desired to. 100 limit the invention to the exact details of con struction herein shown and described, for various modifications within the scope of the claim. may occur to persons skilled in the art.
It is claimed and desired to. secure by Letters Patent:
In combination,.a socketed bracket. and an element. formed for attachment respectively to the exterior of a one-piece cooperatingcasing and window frame,.a pivot carried by said element and 1 0 cooperable. with the socket of said bracket. to form a hinge connectionv betweenthe casingv and frame, and an. arm having oneend. operatively connected with said. pivot. and. having its other end extended rotatably through. the frame-and 15 shaped to. provide a lifting. handle on the inside of said. frame, said.v handle having a: part spaced a sufficient distance from the. frame to provide for insertion of the, fingers betweenthev handlev and frame when the frame is being lifted into 1-20 position and. the handle being turnable without changing; the. position of the fingers to operate the pivot to move the latter. into; and out. of the socket.
