Description

Oct. 31, 1933. M. J, BROWN VEGETABLE CUTTER Filed April 4, 1932 Patented Oct. 31, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VEGETABLE CUTTER Meade J. Brown, Greenville, Mich.
Application April 4, 1932. Serial No. 602,961
1 Claim.
The object of thel invention is to provide a means by which potatoes may be easily and quickly cut lengthwise into square strips particularly suited for cooking in the style known as French fried.
One form of the invention, hereinafter referred to as the cutter, is shown in the accompanying illustration in which Fig. 1 is aplan view of the cutter; Fig. 2 a side view with a part of one of the sides removed; and Fig. 3 a cross section at the bevelled end `of cutter bed piece showing face of follower guard, hereinafter referred to as the guard, in its extreme forward position with slotted end of guard bed piece engaging short knives.
The invention consists of a bed piece 1, Fig. Y1, on one end of which a handle is formed as shown, and the upper margin of the opposite end is bevelled as shown in Fig. 3. To bed piece 1 the sides 2, 2, extending beyond bevelled end of bed piece 1, as shown in Fig. 2, are attached. To the sides 2, 2 a plate 3 is attached so that one edge of said plate 3 slightly overlaps the bevelledv end of bed piece 1. The under side of this overlapping edge of plate 3 is bevelled to a chisel edge, hereinafter referred to as the transverse cutting edge. Short, narrow knives 4, 4, Figs. 1 and 3, are attached'to the bevelled end of bed piece 1; said knives extending to plate 3 to which they are securely fastened at points close to the edge of bevel on edge of said plate 3.
The guard, assembled of metal strip 5,- cross bar 6, metal holder 7, and bed piece 8, is shown in Figs. l, 2, 3. The bed piece 8, of a width allowing it to move freely forwardand back on cutter bed piece 1 between sides 2, 2 and of a thickness which will just permit Athe free passage of its end under edge of plate 3, is slotted on one end as shown in Figs.`1, 3 so that said slotted end will engage knives 4, 4 when guard is at forward end of its travel. Cross bar 6 is attached to bed piece 8 at a point which will permit slotted end of bed piece 8 to engage knives 4, 4 when cross bar 6 reaches edge of plate 3.
Metal strip 5 is attached to cross bar 6 and bent into the form shown in Fig. 3, thus holding guard against the transverse cutting edge of plate 3. The guard is pushed against the other end of potato, the metal piece 'l slightly and holding it entering end of potato in position. Pressure against guard will move the potato forward against transverse cutting edge of plate 3 which will cut a slice from the potato, the unsliced portion passing on to plate 3 cut by them into square When the slice, passl ing under plate 3, reaches knives 4, 4 it will be strips.
It will be noted that the bevelled end of bedk piece 1, which lies under cutting edge of plate 3, readily deflected away fro the bevelled transverse allows the slice to be m plate 3, thus reducing friction and contributing materially to the ease of operation; and that the slotted end of guard bed piece 8, when guard is in its extreme forward position, will engage knives 4, 4, thus forc' ing the strips clear of knives and preventing any lwedging of strips between knives.
further noted that the guard as shown protects the hand of the operator, permits the easy application of the proper amount of force through the palm ofthe hand, prevents the slipping of the vegetable being cut, and is readily detach- 80 able from the body of th I claim:
e cutter.
A vegetable cutter comprising a bed piece having a bevelled end and longitudinally extended sides to which is attached a plate with a bevelled cutting edge presented above the bevelled end of what, a series of fixed kni right angles to the plate, knives being fastened to opposite end fastened to toward said bed piece which it projects someves arranged beneath at one end of each of said the bed piece and the the plate, so arranged and engage the vertical knives, a cross bar to which said bed piece is attached, said cross bar bearing on side pieces of cutter, a metal strip adapted to hold said cross bar in position and permitting free reciproca tion.
MEADE J. BROWN.
