WRITING DESK Filed Oct. 24, 1952 gvwor; BY ffwgazg ATTORNEY Patented Get. 24, 1933 wmm DESK" Gooding N. "Kelly; man Furniture corporation of Illinois Chicago, Ill., assignor to Free- Factories, Inc., Chicago, 111.,
Application October 24, 1932. Serial No. csazer' I 3 Claims. (01. 45-40) Thisinvention relates to writing -:desks of the spinet type which are used in households, private rooms of hotels and other places. These desks are small in size and usually comprise a top with a hinged lid and a sliding writing table. They are rather light in construction for ornamental purposes and do not have that degree of rigidity which is desirable for use in writing or the X strength'of construction which will resist the ex- 0. treme temperature changes and hard usage to which they are often subjected.
The object of the invention is to provide a desk of this kind which will have the rigidity for writing purposes comparable with an office desk, and
which will be strong and substantial in construction without detracting from its comparatively light and ornamental appearance for'household and other uses.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated J a selected embodiment of the invention in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the desk with the lid in open position and the writing desk shown in closed position and in broken lines in open position.
Fig. 2 is an e on the line 2-2 of Fig. of the desk, and
larged perspective sectional view 1 showing one end portion Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing the end portion of the desk appearing in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the desk comprises a rectangular top 4, a back panel 5, two end panels 6 and four corner legs 7. At each end of the desk there is a partition 8 spaced from and parallel 35 with the end panels 6 and this partition has a tongue and groove connection 9 with the back panel 5 and rests upon a front strip 10 which extends from one front leg to the other. An orna-,
mental strip 11 is secured on the underside of the front strip. A panel 12 is provided at each end of the desk to abut the adjacent front leg and together therewith close the front end of the space between the end panels 6 and the partition 8. The panel 12 is recessed at 13to receive the front end of the partition 8 which is fastened to the panel by screws or nails 14. For each leg the end panels 6 and the front panel 12 are provided with vertical slots 15 and 16 to receive the bentends 1'1 of a bracket 18 which extends diagonally between the end panels 6 and front panel-12 and is secured to the leg on the inside thereof by a bolt 19. Adjacent the bent ends 15 and 16 the bracket hasflat portions 20 to receive screws 21 which engage the end and front panels. The leg extends to the top 4 of the desk and the front brackets rigidly secure the front legs'and the end panelsand the front panels together and the rear brackets rigidly se-v cure the front legs and the end panels and. the back; panel together. Byextending the legs t o the top of the desk and securing them to the end panels, front panelsand back panel of the desk I provide a strong and rigid construction with the legs braced by the end panels, back panel and front strip at their upper portions which will pre vent them from becoming wobbly. The partitions 8 and the front panels 12 strengthen the end portions of the desk and assist in maintaining the rigidity of the front legs.
The top is provided with a folding lid which comprises a hinged section 22 to complete the top and a hinged section .23 which fits between the panels 12-and rests upon the front strip 10 to complete the front of the desk. A writing table 24 is arranged to slide between guides 25 fastened to the underside of the partitions 8 and guides 26 fastenedon the inner sides of said partitions and when the desk is closed this table is confined between the partitions 8, the back panel 5 and the hinged front section 23. A compartment cabinet 27 is arranged beneath the top 4 and above the guides 26 andis fastened tothe partitions 8. The top is secured to the back panel and end panels by screws 28. Parts of the desk which are permanently secured. together may be glued according to the woodworking practice instead of being nailed or screwed. The legs are secured-in place only by the brackets and bolts so that the desk maybe shipped knocked down and easily set up for use. The brackets are anchored at their ends to the end panels 6, back panel 5 and panels 12 of the desk and the bolts draw the legs tightly and hold them snugly and securely against the end panels, back panel and panels whichabut the legs and hold them rigidly in upright position. This manner of securing the legs, in combination with the other structural features of the desk, combine to form a strong, substantial and rigid desk without affecting its ornamental appearance or its identity as a spinet type writing desk.
I have shown and described the invention in a form which has been found to be commercially satisfactory but I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as may be necessary and desirable to satisfy different conditions and within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A writing desk comprising a top, back and end panels secured to the underside of the top, a
' said partitions being secured at their rear ends to the back panel and at their front ends to the front panels, a hinged lid arranged in the top between said partitions, and a. front section hinged to said lid and arranged to rest upon the front strip and fill the space between the front;- partitions being,
panels, the inner sides of said flush with the inner edges of the edges of the top about said lid.
2. A writing desk comprising a top, back and end panels secured to the underside of the top, a front strip, front panels on the front strip at the ends thereof, legs at the corners of the desk in abutting relation with the ends of the anels and the ends of said front strip, partitions par allel with and spaced inwardly from the end panels, said part tions being secured at their rear ends' to the back panel and at their frontpanels and the ends to thefr'ont panels, strips s-ured to the bottom edge of the partitions between the back panel and the front strip and projecting inward 1y of said partitions to form bottom guide strips} top guide strips fastened to the inner sides of the partitions above the bottom guide strips, and a Writing table arranged to slide in said guides over the front strip.
3. A writing desk comprising a top, back andend panels secured to the underside of the top, a front strip, front panels on the front strip at the ends thereof, legs at the corners of the desk in abutting relation with the ends of the panels and the ends of said front strip, partitions parallel with' and spaced inwardly from the end panels, said partitions being secured at their front ends to the front panels, a compartment cabinet arranged beneath the: top and between the partitions, a writing table arranged to slide over the front strip and beneath the compartment cabinet, and a lid hinged to the top and having a hinged'front'section' to rest upon the ffdfit Strip. 2
