The main object of my invention is to provide an improved box or container which is well adapted for ice cream and other relatively heavy materials providing a very secure and substantially sealed package therefor.

A further object is to provide a structure having these advantages in which the cover is effectively retained and at the same time is entirely within the walls of the container so that it is not likely to be displaced.

Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the box 1 consists of fiber blank 2 having a bottom 3, a pair of integral side flaps 4 extending therefrom and connected thereto on the scored lines 5. The bottom has also extending therefrom integral side walls 6 along the scored lines 7. Extending laterally from the side walls 6 and connected thereto along the scored lines 8 are the inner side walls 9 and the outer side walls 10. The inner side walls 9 are embossed or offset at 11 to provide recesses 12 for receiving the side wall flaps 4 when the box is formed.

The opposite ends 13 of the blank are outwardly offset on the lines 14 to provide a seat for the cover 15 below the rim of the box 1. The opposite ends 13 of the blank are also provided with finger recesses 16 for providing manual access to the flanges 17 of the cover 15. Q Referring to Fig. 5 the flanges 1'7 are integral with the blank 18 constituting the cover=15 and are connected thereto along the scored lines 19 for folding upwardly relative to the main central portion of the blank 18. If desired the cover 15 may be pre-formed by a stamping operation.

The inner side walls 9 are first folded along the scored lines 8. The side wall 6 supporting the side walls 9 is then folded on scored line 7. After this the flaps 4 are folded along the scored lines 5 and are received by the recesses 12 in the inner side walls. The other side wall 6 is then folded along the scored line 7 and the side walls 10 are folded along the sc'ored lines 8 in overlapping relation to the flaps 4 and the previously folded inner side walls 9, the flaps 4 being sandwiched in between the inner and outer side walls 9 andlO, respectively. The overlapping side walls are suitably glued together.

After the box 1 made up in this manner has been filled with material, the cover 15 is inserted on the top thereof so that the cover is supported by the seat 20 formed by oifsetting the opposite edges 13 of the blank and the flanges 17 of the cover resiliently engaging the side walls of the box.

The walls of the box are flared as illustrated to facilitate the compact packing of the boxes in alternating relation both for shipment and storage. When used for ice cream the boxes may be filled with the liquid cream, chilled and delivered in the container. When received by the consumer the removal of the cover 15 is facilitated by the finger recesses 16 provided in the rim of the box.

Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, there is illustrated a box or container 1 which is made in the manner described above, with the exception that the inner side walls 9 are not offset to provide recesses for the flaps.4, and in lieu of the offsetting of the rim to provide a seat for the cover the inner side walls are provided with notches 21 which provide shoulders on the inside of the box forming a seat 20' for supporting the cover 15. My improved box is not only economical to manufacture but is simple in construction and eflicient in operation for the purposes intended. While I.prefer to use fiber or cardboard for the container and cover, it is to be appreciated that any other suitable material may be used without departing from the invention. lea

It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiments of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modiiications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1

1. A box formed as an integral blank comprising a bottom portion and side wall portions extending from opposite edges thereof, and tapered side wall flaps extending from the other edges of the bottom, said side walls having side wall extensions on their vertical. edges disposed in overlapping relation and glued together with the side wall flaps between them, the inner side wall extensions having inwardly disposed triangular bosses at their lower edges accommodating said bottom flaps, the upper portions of said side wallsbeing outwardly offset providing an internal cover supporting shoulder substantially spaced from the upper edge of the box, and a cover having upturned flanges on its edges fitting within said box upon said shoulder and with its flanges in supporting engagement with the walls of the box above the shoulder.

2. A box formed as an integral blank comprising a bottom portion and side wall portions extending from opposite edges thereof, and tapered wearer ping each other with said flaps therebetween, and

the inner of said overlapping side walls being em-= bossed to provide recesses for said side wall flaps.

4. The combination with a box having a bottom provided with integral opposed side flaps, overlapping side walls sandwiching said flaps between them, one of the side walls being offset to provide a recess for said flaps, the side walls being flared and having outwardly offset rim portions forming a seat for the cover, and a cover resting on said seat and having side walls lying adjacent the oifset rim portions.
