This invention relates to a ticket printing machine oi the kind wherein the setting means for adjustable type wheels are associated with means for determining the extent of movement of members whereby the receiving wheels of a counter are operated during the rotation of the printing cylinder, and the invention consists broadly in the provision of means for moving the difierent operating members once in succession during a complete revolution of the printing cylinder, and of means for rocking the counter so as to bring the receiving wheels into operative contact with their respective operating members on the latter being moved.

The machine comprises three parallel supporting plates 1, 2 and 3. Arranged between the plates 1 and 2 is a printing mechanism comprising a printing cylinder 4 which co-operates with an impression-roller 5 and with an inking roller 6 for printing different numerical values on a paper strip which is delivered from between the roller 5 and the cylinder 4 on the latter being rotated through the medium of a handle 44. The printing types are applied to wheels 7a, 7b, 7c and 702 which are rotatably mounted in the cylinder and which are adjusted to bring the desired numerals into operative position. For this purpose the type wheels are attached respectively to gear wheels 8 a-d which are in mesh with gear wheels 9 ad of the same size mounted respectively on shafts 10 a-d. These shafts are concentric and extend into the space between the supporting plates 2 and 3 where they are fitted respectively with pinions l1 a-d which are in mesh with setting wheels 12 a-d. The setting wheels have three times as many teeth as the pinions and thus require an angular adjustment through 129 for turning the pinions, and with them the type wheels, through a complete revolution. The setting wheels are rotatable about bosses which are mounted rotatably on a shaft 15 between two discs 19 and 25 and which carry setting levers 14 a-d. One end of the shaft 15 projects through the supporting plate 3 and is fitted with an operating knob 23. The other end of the shaft projects, together with the adjacent boss, through the supporting plate 2 and carries the disc 19 outside the latter. By means of the knob 23 the shaft 15 can be axially displaced together with the bosses and the levers in opposition to a spring 24 arranged between the disc 25 and the plate 3. Notched spacing members 12c and 12 engage the setting wheels 12 ad and prevent the latter from axial displacement. The levers are fitted'with lugs 17 a-d which normally engage in notches 18a in the setting wheels under the influence of the spring 24, each wheel having three notches disposed at an angle of 120 relative to one another. Under the influence of the spring 24, moreover, the disc 19 engages in a recess in a disc 20 which is connected to a gear wheel 21. The latter meshes with a gear wheel 22 connected to the printing cylinder 4 rotation of which will therefore be prevented so long as the disc 19 is located in the recess in the disc 20. On the shaft 15 being displaced in opposition to the spring 24, the disc 19 releases the disc 20 and enters a recess in the plate 2, as shown in Fig. 4, and the lugs of the setting levers at the same time leave the notches in the setting wheels so as to enable the latter to participate in the rotation of the printing cylinder.
The setting levers project through guide slots in the machine casing and can, while in engagement with the setting wheels, be moved along the slots for setting the type wheels, the
casing being provided with numerals relative to which the levers are adjusted. Opposite each numeral there are notches into which the levers can recede when the shaft 15 is displaced for releasing the printing cylinder, the levers being locked inthe notches while the cylinder rotates by the abutment of the disc 19 against the side of the rotating disc 20.
A counter 38 is provided which is arranged to rock about a pivot 16 between the supporting plates 2 and 3. This counter is adapted to add the numerical values printed by the cylinder 4 and is provided with receiving wheels 3'1 a-d, one for each printing wheel, Operating members 28 a0l, in the form of toothed sectors, are mounted on a shaft 27 and can be oscillated about the latter for sweeping the receiving wheels by means of their toothed edges 31. The sectors are provided with slots 32 to admit a cam shaft 33 which receives motion from the printing cylinder through the medium of the gear wheel 21 and an intermediate gear 36. Cams 34 a-d on the shaft 33 cooperate with flanges 30 on the sectors for oscillating the latter in cooperation with springs 35. Normally the cams maintain the sectors out of reach of the receiving wheels, as shown in Fig. l. Gaps in the cams allow the sectors to be advanced by the springs whereupon they are at once retracted by the cams. These gaps in the cams are relatively staggered so that the operating members will be oscillated once in succession during a complete revolution of the printing cylinder. Each operating member is retracted before the next operating member is advanced. The position of the counter 38 is controlled by a cam disc 42 connected to a gear wheel 43 which meshes with the gear wheel 36. An arm 39 on the counter bears by means of a nose piece 40 against the cam 42 for holding the receiving wheels in the path of the operating members. The cam is provided with four notches 41a, 41b, etc., into which the nose piece 40 snaps under the weight of the counter for moving the receiving wheels out of the path of the operating members, and the arrangement is such that the nose piece snaps into a notch in the cam each time an operating member is advanced by its spring. Thus the receiving wheels will be out of contact with the operating members except when the latter are retracted by the cams.
The extent of movement of the operating members, and thus of the receiving wheels, is proportional to the numbers printed by the respective type wheels and is determined by cams 26 H connected to the setting levers. Each operating member is provided with a nose piece 29 for which the respective lever cam forms an abutment, the cam being provided with steps which limit the forward motion of the operating sector according to the position of the lever.
The action is as follows:
When a ticket is to be issued, the particular price of the ticket is set up by means of levers 14 a--d which turn the setting wheels and the type wheels to correspond. After the setting, the shaft 15 is displaced by means of the knob 23 so as to release the printing cylinder and lock the setting levers in position. On the cylinder being turned for printing and issuing the ticket, the operating members 28 a--d are oscillated in succession, and at each oscillation the counter 88 is rocked so that the respective receiving wheel of the counter will be operated in accordance with the number printed by its type wheel. Thus the total amount of all the tickets issued will appear on the counter. The setting wheels participate in the rotation of the printing cylinder, and when the latter has completed its revolution. a fresh set 01' notches 18a will be in position to receive the lugs 17 a--d of the setting levers which therefore re-engage the setting wheels as soon as the disc 19 is able to re-enter the recess in the disc 20. Thereupon the levers can again be adjusted for setting the type wheels.
For statistical purposes a registration of the prices of the individual tickets issued may be required, and a controlling strip may therefore be fed from one to the other of a pair of rollers 45 and 46. A roller 47 connected to an operating lever is used for approaching the controlling strip to the printing cylinder each time the type wheels pass for printing the numbers on the strip. The lever is automatically operated in known manner.
The printing cylinder may also be provided with type wheels 48a, 48b, etc., adapted, in known manner, to print serial numbers on the issued tickets as well as on the controlling strip. Thus a registration of each ticket together with its price and serial number will be obtained.
I claim:
1. A ticket printing machine comprising a frame, a rotatable printing cylinder in said frame, means for rotating the cylinder, a series of rotatable type wheels in said printing cylinder, means for setting the type wheels independently to print various numerical values, a counter arranged to rock in said frame, a receiving wheel in said counter for each type wheel, an operating member for each receiving wheel normally out of contact with the latter, means associated with the setting means for determining the extent of movement of the different operating members, means associated with the printing cylinder for moving the difierent operating members once in succession during a complete revolution of the cylinder, and means associated with the printing cylinder for rocking the counter to bring the receiving wheels into operative contact with the respective operating members on the latter being moved.
2. A structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the operating members consist of oscillatory toothed sectors, and wherein the means for oscillating the sectors consist of springs and rotary cams.
3. A ticket printing machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein the setting means comprises setting levers for the different type wheels, wherein the operating members consist of toothed oscillatory sectors, and wherein the means for determining the extent of movement of the operating members consist of cams connected to the levers and moving in the path of the operating members.
4. A ticket printing machine as claimed in claim 1 wherein the setting means comprises a plurality of concentric shafts, gear wheels connecting said shafts to the type wheels, operating wheels for said shafts, levers having lugs adapted to engage in notches in said operating wheels, means for disengaging the levers from the operating wheels, and means for locking the levers in disengaged position while the printing cylin- CURT HANEL.
