This invention relates to improvements in combination floor waiters and polishers.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a simple, emcient and inexpensive machine v for waxing a fioor'as'well as for polishing` the same, after the waxing operation'shall have been completed.
Av further object of this invention is to provide -novel' means for feeding the wax in the machine l0 when a given surface thereof, lin contactwith the floor, has worn away. 1
Another object of this invention is to provide. means whereby a rag or polishing cloth is de` signed to be used in conjunction with a perforated 1'5 bottom on the machine, the rag being employed to cover the waX surface directly ,exposed for contact with the ioonwhile a cover is providedffor the rag and wax, about which th polishing cloth is designed to be secured.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a cover secured removably to the bottom of the machine whenever it is desired to change fromra waxing operation to a polishing operation, inasmuch as it is not necessary to manipulate the machine to effect the change of the Vcover fitting the bottom ofthe machine, and the polishing material being designed for removable attachment around theside vwall as well as upon the bottom of this cover.
A further object of'this invention is to provide means for quickly and instantly locking the cas- A final object of this invention is 'to provide a* follower plate with a handle by means of whichl the follower plate is adapted to be removed from the casing, when the hinged lid has been opened. In conjunction with the feedingr means a screw is provided for pressing the plate down when the 5G wax requires feeding. l i
In order to apply uniform pressure by means of the set screw upon the follower plate inthe casing of the machine it is designed tosecure to the lower bearing end of the yscrew' aF series of radial arms, whereby an extended bearing sur# face is provided upon this set screw.
With the above and other objects in viewmy invention consists in the arrangement,v combination, and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specifications, and then more parwax feeding function to take'placeY ticularly pointed out in the appended claims.v

Figure 312 is a cross-sectional` View of the machine;v y
The present invention consists of a casing broadly designated'lO having a preferably oblong shape as vshownv in the figures of the drawings.
The casing 10 has opposing longitudinal side walls of curvilinear lshapedesignated 12, and end walls also formed curvilinear designated 14, these sidewalls being in the form of surfaces bulging out laterally. The preferred form of the invenand the follower plate tion, however, consists ofthe box-like vcasinglO v having base'flanges, two of whichv extend longitudinally as at 12 and have convex edges, while the other twohave end base flanges' 14 and these are also formed with convex edges, the arrange- 'inent being such that the corners of the base iianges are lformedy narrowest. the "casing is designated 11. y
The bottom surface of the casing 10 is formed The Vinterior of Ywith an oblong countersunk chamber 15 and with arectangular opening. Across this openingis secured a wire-mesh or reticulated member 16 which completely covers this opening and provides a porous surface thru the interstices Aof which `the jelly-like wax A may be fed. It is proposed to employ acloth spreader or sheathing- 20,'which has its sides 18 pressed against and secured upon the flanges 12, and 14 of the machine, being removably held in this position by .virtue of the cord or elasticl band 17, by means of which thissheathing is tied around the bottom of the machine.
The box or casing of the machine, v10, is designed tobe closedfby 'a flat lid or cover plate rei El which is reinforced by means of a central longitudinal rib 23 and the medial and end transverse ribs 22, in order to hingedlyzsecure and mount this lidupon the casing it is Vnecessary to provide a pair of integral upstanding webs at one end of the casing l0, as shown in Figure 3, these websl projecting slightly above the casing to provide hinge lugs, designed to cooperate with the hinge lugs 24 formed upon one end of the lid 21, as shown in Figure l0.V When the hinge lugs 24, abut the hinge lugs 25 pivot pins or a pivot pin or rod 26 is employed and is" passed thru each pair or thru all of said'A lugs. In this manner the lid may be closed in atcontact with the upper edge of the casing, or else held in open position when it is desired to replenish the was in the casing l0.
Inside of the casing i0 is a follower plate 43 which snuglyV nts this casing. The jelly-like wax will-be placed first into the casing, so,` as to pass thru the interstices of the wire-mesh bottom and engage the necessarily porous cloth sheathing 20, to thereby be applied, as a coating, upcn a door when this k,casing is moved across the floor. In orderto effect the adjustment of the follower plate 43 against the mass of wax when it becomes necessary to pressfdown the wax, after the wax has been worn down, Iprovide a single set screw or feed screw 40, which at its bottom is provided with a cruciform spreader device consisting of the .radial oppositely extending arms 42 and those arms integral to and at right angles to these arms, designated The screw is threaded thru the center of the top lid 21 and above the lid is provided with a suitablev operating handle 4l.
As ameans of manually operating the machine and to push.; and pull it across the floor to be waxed and polished, I provide a long handle 34, secured removably into a conical retainer 33 secured upon a U-shaped bail having the upper portion 32 and the parallel side arms 29, 3Q. The side arms 29, 30 of this bail are pivoted uponthe sides of the casing l0; pivot pins 28 pass thru v the lower ends or portions of the arms 29, 30 and are pivotally journaled in bearings 27 fiXedly secured upon the base flanges l2 of the casing 10 of the machine. The bail is thus pivotally mount-. ed centrally. of the casing.
As a means for effecting the polishing of 4-a floor by the same machine without the necessity of converting the casing, all it is necessary to dol is` to insert the bottom of the machine into a metal tray having the bottom 46 and the side walls 47, the latter having the same curvilinear outline as the machine itself. Around the side wall 47 of the tray is designed to be secured the polishing rag or material in the form of sheepskin or the like B, a iiexible cord or elastic handig being employed to securely tie this material around the tray with the sides of the sheepskiny or Wooly material secured against the side of the tray and with the main body thereof extending across the under surface of the bottom 46'of this tray. The base flanges l2, 14 ofthe machine will snug: ly and frictionally iit into the side walls of the trayivhile the rag sheathing 20 thereof will overlie theioor 46 of the tray. The lid 43 is provided with al pivotal bail consisting of the handle 43 and the right angular side arms having the outturnedv pintles 44 received movably in the lugs 45 carried medially upon the lid 43. When the bail is not in use it will overlie thelid as shown in Figure 7.
In operation, when the machine is used for,l
waxing floors the wax will first be placed in the casing 10. The follower plate 43 will then be pressed against the wax to causethe wax to spread out upon the cloth or rag sheathing 20.
his is eifected by giving a turn or turns Yto the handle 4l of the screw 40 and thereby turning l theAcruciform spreader attached to the bottom of the screw, which is then caused to advance downwardly, 'pressing the plate 43 against the wax. This action will be repeated as often as it is necessaryl to make the wax engage the cloth 2U. As the operator pushes the machine across the floor,` employing handle 34 for this purpose, a film of wax will be placed upon the floor uniformly and quickly. After the floor has thus been waxed and it is desired' to polish it, the operator frictionally inserts the casing 1G, and its rag sheathing 20 into the tray having,` the bottom 46 and side wall 47, and now the wax cannotY come into direct contact with the floor, and the polishing material B may engage the iioor and rub the wax in such a manner as to impart the desired waxy gloss upon the floor. By
removing the retaining string, cord or elastic formed medially upon one end of the casing 10;
this lip has a recess upon its projecting end. There is a bail or rectangular link 38 whose lower shaft is pivotally mounted in a bearing fiXedly secured at 39 upon the base flange 14 of the machine. This link 39 carries upon its upper shaft roller 37, so when the link is in upright positionftheroller 37 may ride wedgingly upon the lug 36 until it fits the recess of this lug, and this having been done the lid 43` will have been drawn into tight engagement with the upper kedge of the casing 10. i
I do not mean to confine myself to the eX- act details of construction herein disclosed.
What I desire toclaim and secure by Letters Patent is:- Y l Y 1. In combination a wax casinghaving a perforated wax, discharging bottom, a follower plate in said casing, a rectangular wire bail hingedly mounted; upon the upper face of the follower, a closure on Vthe casing, threaded into the closure so as to project below the closure, a series of radial fiat arms carried rigidly; by the lowerendof the screw, being enn closed bythewire bail when the latter is in closed position overlapping the follower plate.
2. A wax box having a removable top, a perforated bottom anda continuous base flange an adjustable screw skirting its bottom laterally, a web formed per-l wax holding case having provision-at its bot,m
tom for discharging the wax, a follower `plate adjustably positioned in said case to feed the wax downwardly, atop removably mounted upon the case, a crewrtapped adjustably in said top and having a thumb head thereabove, and a cruciform spreader carried by the lower endvof said screw and engaging the follower plate to adjust the latter.
