(Cl. 250 -275) This invention relates to transmitting valves, more particularly to those which are used for generating short waves of less than 100 meters and it has for its object to suggest a construction of these valves which permits the load of the valve to be raised without any risk of the valves breaking down from overheating. According to the invention, this object is attained by providing the valve with a device for cooling JDthe leading-in conductor of the grid with the aid of water or any other liquid.
It has been found that under heavy loads a sufficiently long life of the transmitting valve can be ensured only by intensively cooling this -.l6 1eading-in conductor and an efficacious cooling by a liquid appears to be best for this purpose.
The invention further suggests a construction which permits liquid cooling in a practical manner. The construction is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing which represents only that part of a transmitting valve which is necessary for a good comprehension of the invention. The transmitting valve comprises a cylindrical metal anode 1 fl which forms part of the air-tight envelope of the valve and which is sealed at 2 to a glass hood 3 having a re-entrant portion 4. The inner end of the reentrant portion is sealed at 5 to a metal tubular leading-in conductor 6 of the grid. This leading-in conductor serves at the same time as a support for the grid which consists of a plurality of parallel rods '7 on which a grid wire 8 is helically Wound.
In the annular chamber between the glass por- 535; tion 4 and the tube 6 there is inserted a tube 9 the outer end of which is secured to the bottom of a container 10 having an external diameter substantially equal to that of the glass hood 3 'and provided with a nozzle 11 for carrying away ii-4,01 the cooling agent. At its inner end, the tube 9 is provided with several radial side-openings 12 which are directed towards the seal 5.
The cooling liquid is forced into the tube 9 through one or more side-openings 13 provided in the wall of a second tube 14 which embraces An outlet opening from the receptacle is provided at 11.
What I claim is:
1. An electron discharge tube having a sealed envelope and a plurality of electrodes, a lead-in 6. conductor supporting one of said electrodes said' conductor extending through the envelope and sealed thereto, a portion of said conductor disposed outside the envelope, a tubular member surrounding the external portion of said conductor and forming therewith an annular chamber for the passage of a cooling fluid, an inlet connection communicating with said annular chamber, said tubular member having vents to direct the cooling fluid to the seal between the envelope and the conductor, and a second member surounding the tubular member and having an outlet connection for the cooling fluid.
2. An electron discharge tube having a sealed envelope and a plurality of electrodes, ,a lead-in conductor supporting one of. said electrodes and extending through and having an intermediate portion sealed to said envelope, a tubular member surrounding that portion of the conductor which extends outside the envelope, one end of said tubular member having an opening in close proximity to the seal between the conductor and the envelope, an inlet connection to said-tubular member for a cooling fluid, and a member provided with an outlet connection surrounding 8 v the tubular member to form an annular return passage for said fluid.
3. An electron discharge tube having a sealed envelope and a plurality of electrodes, a lead-in conductor supporting one of said electrodes and having a circular flange between the ends of said conductor, said flange being sealed to the envelope so that a portion of the conductor is extended outside the envelope, a tubular member surrounding said external portion, one end of said tubular member being in contact with the flange of the conductor and having openings for directing cooling fluid from the tubular member towards the seal between the envelope and the conductor, an inlet connection for cooling fluid at the other end of said tubular member, a second member surrounding the tubular member and having an outlet connection for the cooling fluid, a flexible member securing the sec-- ond member to the envelope, and a packing joint between the second member and the tubular member.
4. An electron discharge tube having a sealed envelope, and a plurality of electrodes, a lead-in no conductor supporting one of said electrodes, a
' the conductor and having openings at that end adjacent the seal between the envelope and the conductor so that cooling fluid from the second tubular member is directed towards the seal, a third member substantially surrounding the tubular member and the extension member and having an outlet connection for the cooling fluid, a'flexible member securing. the third member to the envelope, and a packing joint between the third member and the second tubular member.
5. An electron discharge tube having a sealed envelope provided with a tubular reentrant portion, and a pluralityof electrodes, a lead-in conduotor for one of said electrodes extending through and spaced from said tubular reentrant portion, a cylindrical flange intermediate the ends of said conductor sealed to the reentrant portion, a tubular partition extending between and concentric With said conductor and envelope reentrant portion forming a pair of annular and concentric passage-ways, an inlet connection for cooling fluid communicating with one of said passage-Ways, and an enclosure carried by the tube envelope having an outlet connection communicating with the other of said passage-ways.
