2 Claims. ,(01. s1 1oa) 10 a worm coacting with one of the clamping ele- 15 apart.
Another object is to provide a wrench with the jaws thereof adjustable by remote control for reaching and turning a clamping member or a pipe confined in a narrow space.
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specification and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the wrench partly in section and partly cut away to show'the mechanism for adjusting the wrench jaws or clamping elements.
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2--2,- of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3--3, of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in elevation, showing a modified manipulator for operating the worm. v
Fig. 5 is a section across the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective of the saddle or yoke member. I
As illustrated, the wrench includes a lower jaw, or clamping element generally designated, 10
40' having an upper serrated face 11 and a saddle supporting intermediate portion 12 provided with a worm receiving recess 13 and a spindle or stem receiving groove 14.
Associated with the saddle support portion 12 and preferably integral therewith is the depending extension 15 having a longitudinally disposed slot 16 adapted to receive the spindle 17, although, it is to be understood that extension 15 may be a tube or the like for receiving the spindle.
A hollow handle 18 is secured to the spindle receiving extension 15 and abutsshoulder 19 of saddle support 12.
Secured to one end of the spindle is the worm 20 in mesh with rack 21 of clamping serrated jaw 22. Worm 20 is suitably guarded in recess 13 for proper coaction with rack 21 in any well known fashion.
Spindle 17 lies within groove 14 of the saddle support and slot or channellfi of extension 15 and its free end has secured thereto a'knurled manipulator 23 for rotating the spindle to actuate worm 20 and adjust upper jaw 22 with respect to the lower jaw 11.
A hollow yoke or saddle 24 hinged to the lower jaw 11 by means of pin 25 loosely embraces the intermediate or saddle supporting portion of lower jaw and the rack 21 for guiding the latter when actuated by the worm.
In order to maintain the worm and rack in mesh, a leaf spring 26 secured to saddle support 12 has its free end abutting against an inner wall 27 of the saddle to yieldingly maintain the latter against the rack.
In operation, to adjust the jaw 22 with respect to jaw 11, motion imparted by the operator to manipulator 23 is directly transmitted to the worm which in turn causes the upper jaw to move relatively of the lower. Of course relative adjustment of the jaws may also be had by directly operating the worm, a portion of which projects beyond suitable alined openings 28 in the sides of the saddle.
Where it is desired to increase the mechanical efficiency of the wrench, manipulator 23 (see Fig. 4) instead of being knurled may be provided with laterally or radially extending arms as 24.
With the present invention and an advantage thereof resides in the fact that a member, say a nut or pipe, in a relatively small space and in accessible for an operator to reach, may be adjusted or turned by the device herein disclosed in first applying the clamping elements to the nut or pipe, and secondly clamping the elements to the nut or pipe from a point remote thereof by actuating the manipulator 23.
The foregoing disclosure has been given by way of example for clearness and understanding of the principles underlying my invention. Hence no unnecessary limitations should be understood and the appended claims should be construed as broadly as the state of the art permits.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a wrench having a clamping jaw including an extension having a longitudinally disposed slot, a handle secured to said extension and enclosing said slot, a spindle arranged within said slot and having a portion projecting beyond the handle, said jaw having a transverse opening in communication with said slot, a worm disposed in said opening and conliii nected to one end of said spindle, a rack having a complementary clamping jaw, a saddle hinged to the first mentioned. jaw to interconnect the rack and worm, means to hold the latter and rack in mesh and means carried by the portion of the spindle projecting beyond the handle for adjusting one of said jaws relative to the other.
2. As an article of manufacture, a Wrench having a slotted clamping jaw and including a depending extension having a slot in communication with a longitudinal slot of said jaw, a handle secured to said extension and enclosing a major portion of the slot thereof, a spindle disposed in to the 7
