BenewedMarcli 11,1933 '2 Claims. (01. 71-141 7 The object of invention is to provide a motor. in which a number of cylinders "are mounted radially with reference ,to the shaft,-
reference to the pistons, and thrust beingimf parted to a double cam on the driven shaft by .means of. rollerssuitably mounted and interposed between the connecting rods and cam.
A further object is to provide, in connection with the foregoing, a plurality of arms or links extending between the connecting rods of the pistons at the points where the rollers are mounted, and to provide stationary guiding means for relieving the connecting rods or piston rods of undue strain.
A further object is to provide a unitary member, on each side, by means of which the guiding operation may be effected. v
A further object is to provide in this type of engine or motor a predetermined order of operation of elements, as hereinafter disclosed.
A further object is to provide an engine or motor of increased efliciency, the weight of the structure being reduced, compared with the weight of many other engines, and to provide for operation on the minimum quantity of fuel.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming part of the application:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical section, transversely thru the driven shaft.
Figure 2 is a section longitudinally thru two of the cylinders, oppositely located, and thru the intermediate mechanisms including the cam carried centrally by the driven shaft.
Figure 3 is. an elevation showing the cam detached.
Figure 4 shows one of the pistons in longitudinal section.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view showing a portion of the structure constituting a guiding frame with radial slots for directing the movement of the pistons.
Figure 6 is a detailed view showing a two part connecting element, with provision for the use of a shim in order to effect slight variation in the length of the complete device.
a Figure '7 is a view in section on line 7-7 of Figure 6.
.Figure8 is'in section, and shows the mounting ofone of the rollers and the cooperation thereof with the cam, a portion of which appears in the lower part-in section.
The cylinders are designated by the positions referred to inthe description of operation, the
numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, '7 and'8 being applied,
and these cylinders may be of approximately'the usual type including the body portion 10, the flange 11" and the connecting flanges 12, by
means of which the cylinders are individually secured to a housing shown at 13. 7
An exhaust connection for each cylinder is designated 14, an intake connection isshown at 15, and the position of the spark plug is designated 7 V Each piston 1'7 cooperates with the cylinder in which it is mounted, and has formed therewith or logitudinally connected therewith a rod 18 v a to be considered as a connecting rod, and roller 19 pivoted on each rod cooperates with the cam 20 shown in detail in Figure 3, and elsewhere illustrated. This cam is rigid with reference to shaft 21 to be driven, and the positions of the rollers with reference to the cam at a particular time are shown in Figure 1.
In order to guide the pistons and their rods, 1 provide a plurality of frames 25 including a centralannular portion and radially extending portions, the latter being slotted at 26 and the ele-' ments 27 cooperating with the slots for the purpose indicated. The laterally extending devices 28, formed with the guiding frames, are connected by means of pins or bolts 29 at the points shown, this connection being with ears or the' like formed on the inner portion of the housing.
The ends of the connecting rods or piston rods 18 are pivotally connected by means of the devices of Figures 6 and 7, each comprising ele-, ments 33, 33' adjustable regarding length by meansof securing devices shown at 34, adapted to retain shims when required. The elements last named are not illustrated in the drawings, but their use in this connection will be readily understood. The rollers are mounted at the: points of connection indicated in general by reference character 35 in the several figures.
It will be observed that the engine is of the air cooled type and that no crank shaft is em-' ployed, the central cam taking the place of the crank elements and a straight shaft'beingprovided.
Referring to the numerals designating the cylinders, the order of firing the charge is 1, 6, "1, Y 4, 5, 2, 3, Ii.
The cam in Figure 1 is beingthruSttowardthe left, under the force of *the explosion in cylinder 1, and simultaneously the pistons of cylinders 2, 3, 6, '7 are raised, whereasjpistons4,
5 and 8 move inwardly. Cylinder member 6-is on compression when the charge in cylinder l is fired. Cylinder 6 is fired and the pistons are :raised; or moved. . outwardlydn cylinders 17,,8, 3, 4, :tbe iDiStOIlSfIOf :cylimiers 1,2, :5 :moving inwardly, :or to therloweraposition.
The charge in cylinder No..B1is-;next;fired;-and 1 athe ;remaining charges are fired in ;the order abeforeiindicated. .;Emphasis-isg.placeds.on thefact .that zthezpistonrrods. are Jheld :to direct radial :movzement, athat a ztrue balance .is always maini-taineli, and-:thatzthe arms, ,such;as elements m zconnecting, alternate piston rods, are included in two setszofatoggle joints, the entire assembly of moving parts being linked'together with a View of efiiciency in service and the elimination of non-productive motion, including friction.
Without the use of gearing, the device produces the equivalent of a two to one gear ratio, and upon each revolution of the propeller, the pistons complete four cycles.
\What'is claimed= is: x v 1..'In;;an;engine,;a shaft, .a pluralitytof cylinders and pistons therein, piston rods fixed with reference to the pistons and movable in a path varadially of the. shaft, being aligned with the longitudinal axesof the cylinders, piston guiding -elements and' unitary means connecting the'inner ;po rti,ons-ofzthese elements, said elements including outer laterally extending members, a housing,
zlmeans connecting adjacent laterally extending "members-with each other and with the inner wall of the, housing, rollers connected with the piston rods, axial elements for the rollers, a cam engaging the rollersan'ditransmitting thrust) exerted by? the-pistons, and strain: distributing: ele- ,ments connected -with the aforesaid axial i-ele- -ments.
2. .-An 1 engine astructure :comprising .the ele- 2-100 ments .of ,claim 1, "and ,combined ecompression producing :elements .;.and strain :distribntingflevices connected with the :..axial';.elements ,of the rollers.
