Description

Oct. 17, 1933. E. L. TEICH LOCK CONTROLLED ELECTRIC SWITCH Filed Dec. 11, 1931 INVENTOR Ernest L. T etch BY gfl/ ATTORNEY5 Patented Oct. 17, 1933 a Z h I ,1931308 j um'reo ST -res PATENT 3; i
.' LooK' CONTROLLED meme swi'ron Ernest L. Teich, New Britain, Conn.) assignor to h The American Hardware Corporation, New p Britain, Connaa corporation of Connecticut f 1 Application December 11,1931 V v Serial No. 580,255 I zolaims. (01, 200-42) The present inventionrelates to electric invention the end of shaft '7 is threaded and a switches and more particularly to lock controlled plate 8 is held in engagement with springs 6 by electric switches, and comprises a new look cona nut 9. Relative'rotation between plate 8 and trolled'switch of this type which may be opershaft 7 is prevented inany s'uitable manner 'as ated by a master key as'well as by a key individby keying tdthe-movablecontact carrying parts ual thereto. x of the switch.. In the embodiment-illustrated Heretofore one drawback of lock controlled the plate 8 is providedwith extending portions" electric switch was that it was not possible to 10 which are cutawayto receive projecting fin operate a plurality of such switches by one and gers 11 carried by the movable contact carrying 10 the same key, unless the locks of each were disk 12. For operation of theswitch by the lock 1 identical. Thus when a supervisor or the like plate 8-carries a projecting finger 13 which for in. the course of his duties, was required to operconvenience is stamped from the body-of the ate any one of avariety of different lock conplate so' asto extend at right angles therefrom. trolled switches, he could not use a master key Cooperating with finger 13 is a disk 14 rigidly 15 but had to be provided with a diiferent key for mounted on the plug 15 of the lock a'nd having: 70"? each look. In accordance with the .presentin two projections 16 :and16 thereon ad p to vention a lock controlled electric switch operable engage finger. 13 .upon rotation of the plug 15. by a master key as well as by a key individual Fingers 16fand 16 ,as shownx-in -iFig. 3 areso thereto may be constructed by. relatively simple spaced that, after plug. 15 has been rotated-in one 20 modification of parts ofstandard devices. The direction or another .tooperatethe sw'itcli -by 75, new lock controlled switch comprises asnap means'of one'or'the other of fingers16 and l6'. switch of usual construction and of :the 'oscilla-"- sufficient lost motion is permitted for oppositev tory type, that is one which is turned in one rotation'of the plug to'key removing-:position'at' direction to close, and turnedin the opposite diwhich time finger. 13 engaged by the other;
rection to open, and a lock having'a set of pin finger of the lock ready for operation in theop. 80 tumblers and-but one set of spring pressed ,posite direction... .1 v} i drivers, including a master section in at least one Plug 15 is provided with the-usual tumblers 17 of the tumblers, and lost motion means for percooperating with spring pressed drivers 18 in mitting withdrawal of the key irrespective of the lock cylinder 19. Two of the tumblers 1'1 whether the switch is open or closed. are sectionaliz'ed in the usuallmanner to permit 851; For a better understanding of the invention of operation of the lock by a master key; thev reference may be had to the accompanying drawkey 20 illustrated in Fig. 2 being, jof'course, the ing of which: i master key, not one individual to the particular Fig. 1 is a front view of a lock controlled eleclock illustrated. To prevent complete rotation Switch embodying e t of the plug by the key a stop 21 is carried by 90:
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device of Fig. the lock cylinder l9 and a disk 22 rotatable with 1 taken along the line 2-2 thereof and showing the plug 15 and cut away through an extended.

In this latter position as shown in t e line -5 of Fig. 2. g dotted lines stop 21 is in engagement with disk 100' The Particular embodiment of the inv on 22, preventing further rotation thereof in a clock-' illustrated in the drawing includes a snap switch wise direction. e c in a casing 1 and apted to be set The cover 2 of the lock has the usual opening into a wall in the usual manner of fiush switches, therein for the plug. The words on and off and a lock enclosed within a cover 2 and car-' are. engraved or stamped upon" the "cover 2 to-' 105 ried by a plate 3. As the flush switch is a standa gether with a double headed arrow indicating the ard snap switch of oscillatory type only portions direction in which to turn the key. for operating" thereof, such as the movable contact arms 4, the switch. I Y fixed contacts 5, springs 6. and operating shaft 7 a It will .be understood that the switch casing 1 g have been illustrated. In accordance with the may be enclosed in a suitable box sunk into a wall or other fixture and that the lock may be secured to such a box by bolts or screws passing, for example, through holes 23 in plate members 24 fastened to the supporting plate 3. Prefer-- ably casing 1 is also mounted on plate 3 by means of the same screws utilized for fastening plate members 24'to plate 3 and indicated inFigs. l and '5 at 2 5. Screws 25 pass through aligned passages in casing 1 and in plate 3 and thread into threaded holes in members 24, so as to prevent removal of the lock from the switch after installation of the casing within a wall.. Any
suitable apertured cover plate for covering all of the device except the casing 2 may of course be provided; threaded holes 26 in members 24 being provided for securing sucha plate into po sition; 7
When it is desired to open the switch, assuming it closed as shown in Figs. 2,- 3 and 5, the key 20 may be inserted when and only when the posite direction. If. a key individual to the lock,
instead 01 the master key. 20'is used, the opera,
tion will be the. same except that, the short master sections of two" tumblers 17 will be forced.
u-p"with the drivers-in thexusual manner.
The invention has now beendescribed in connectionfwith the preferred embodiment thereof. Obviously various changes in the construction of the parts could be .made 'without departing from the scope of the invention; the principal features thereof being the combination ofian oscillatory snap" switch with a. lock operable. by a master'as well as by an individual key and the provision of lost motion means between.the
lock and switch for permitting withdrawal oi the key after operation of the switch. As'in lock controlled switches heretofore known the present device is so constructed that the switch and the member thereon which cooperates with the necessity of constructing the entire device at a single plantwhich would not ordinarily be provided. with experts in both lines of manu facture. I I
1 The following is claimed:
1. A lock controlled electric switch comprising in combination an oscillatory snap switch having an actuating member operable to open and close the switch upon rotation in opposite directions, a key operable plug having a single predetermined angular position at which a key may be inserted and withdrawn, and connections, between the plug and switch actuating member for thus rotating said member upon respectively turning the plug in opposite directions; said con-- nections having provision for lost motion Whereby the plug may be returned to said predetermined angular positionafter operation thereof in either direction. a
v2. A look controlled electric switch comprising in combination an oscillatory snap switch having an axial actuating shaft, a-disk carried by'said shaft and keyed thereto, a projecting finger on said disk, a lock having a lock cylinder with a single set of drivers and a plug having a set of pin tumblers, including master tumblers, therein, a member carried'on the rear surface of said plug, rotatable therewith and having a pair of projecting fingers, and means for so securing said switch. and saidlock together as to causesaid finger on'said disk to be. engaged and moved by oneor the other of said fingers on said member 'wh'en the plug is rotatedby a key; said fingers carried by said member being so spaced as to permit return of the plug into key withdrawing position after operation of the'switch.
