BRACELET CHAIN Filed July 9, 1931 I N V EN TOR.
/ a/zz/ v'0e Warsaw A TTORNEYS.
Patented Oct. 17, 1933 UNITED STATES BRACELET CHAIN Maurice Anderson, Edgewood ltrL, assignor .to Levy, Anderson 00., Inc., a corporation of 5 Rhode Island 1 Application July 9, 1931. Serial No."549,5 84 p 6 Claims. (01. 59- -s0) This invention relates to a bracelet chain and has for its object to provide a construction of chain the links of which are flexibly connected together and consisting of the minimum number of parts.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a chain formed of a plurality of units each of which is a single piece so constructed as to have the appearance of being two separate pieces connected together.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a bracelet having a face in a single plane presenting a smooth and ornamental appearance.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a chain link with the end portion thereof stiffened at the end from which a connecting portion extends to strengthen the chain and at the same time give to the chain the 'appearance of a. separate piece secured to the. body of the link.
With these and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and moreparticularly set forth in the appended clainis.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the bracelet chain.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the units showing the link portion and connectingportion thereof.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
In the construction of bracelet chains it is desirable that the chain be of thin appearance and yet sufiiciently strong-to withstand the strains of connecting the same to a wrist watch or the like to maintain the same on the wrist. It is also desirable to provide a construction which will have the appearance of links connected together by a separate part to emphasize the chain effect and yet from a construction standpoint, it is desirable that the minimum number of parts be provided to reduce construction costs such as assembling and the like. In order to accomplish these results, I have provided a single unit having a link portion and connecting portion extending from one endthereof which may be folded about a downwardly deflected portion of adjacent link to maintain the parts flush along the top and in order that the pended claims.
the appearance of the links being connected by separate connecting parts; and the following is a detailed description of the presentembodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by whichthese advantageous results may be ac complished.
With reference to the drawing, the unit is.il-' lu'strate'd in perspective in Fig. 4 as comprising the link portion 10 and a connecting portion 11 extending from one end thereof. The link portion is provided with an opening 12 which removes substantially the center of the link and provides side bars 13 and end bars 14 and 15. The end bar 14 or the portion between the opening 12 and one end of the link is deflected downwardly as illustrated while the bar 15 atfthe other end may be considered as a part of the connecting portion 11 and is left with its top surface flush with theside barslti. v
The connecting portion 11 is substantially the width'of theopening lzand extends beyond the end of the link. The cross bar 15'or part of the connecting portion is stiffened by longitudinally extending ribs 16 providing recesses 1'7 in the top or upper face which form a line of separation between the link portion 10 and the connecting portion 11 giving to the connecting portion 11 the appearance of being separate from the link portion 10. i
The connection portion 11'of one link extends through the opening 12 in the next link in the series and has its tongue portion 18 folded about the deflected cross bar 14 of this next link to hingedly connect the same thereto.
By the use of stiffening ribs on the bottom of the unit the connecting portion is prevented from bending to break the unit along its narrow lines of connection thereto and thus provides a link construction which has a minimum number of parts each of which is formed in multiple for assembly to form the length'and appearance of the chain desired.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the ap- I claim:
1. A bracelet chain comprising a plurality of connected units, each unit having a link portion generally rectangular in form and provided with an opening inwardly from the peripherial edge thereof, the stock at one end of the unit extending beyond the end'of the link in a width substantially the width of said opening and folded through the opening and closely about the stock between the opening and the correspondingly other end of the next link, and means for stiffening the stock of the link at the end from which the extension projects, comprising the deflection of the stock of the link.
2. A bracelet chain comprising a plurality of connected units, each unit having a link portion generally rectangular in form and provided with an opening inwardly from the peripherial edge thereof, the stock at one end of the unit extending beyond the end of the link in a width substantially the width of said opening and folded thru the opening and closely about the stockbetween the opening and the corresponding other end of the next link and ribs on said link extending longitudinally of the link at the end from which said extension projects and in line with said projection to stiffen the stock of the link.
3. A bracelet chain comprising aplurality of connected units, each unit having a link portion 7 generally rectangular in form provided with, an opening inwardly from the peripherial edge thereof and a connecting portion at one end of the link, the stock between the opening and the other end of the link being deflected downwardly, said connecting portion extending beyond the end of said link portion and thru the opening and about the deflected portion of the next link, and means for stiffening the stock of the link portion atithe end from which said connecting portion extends, comprising the deflecting of the stock of the link.
f 4. A bracelet chain comprising a plurality of connected units, each unit having a link portion generally rectangular in form provided with an opening inwardly from the peripherial edge thereof and a connecting portion, the stock be-: I
tween the opening and one end'of the link being deflected downwardly, said connecting portion extending beyond the end of said link portion at the opposite end and thru the opening and about the deflected portion of the next link and ribs on said link extending longitudinally of the link at the end from which said extension projects to stiffen the stock thereof.
5. A bracelet chain comprising a plurality of connected units, each unit having a link portion generally rectangular in form provided with an opening inwardly from the peripheral edge thereof and a connecting portion, the stock between the opening and one end of the link being deflected downwardly, said connecting portion being of a width substantially the Width of said opening and extending beyond the end of said link portion at the opposite end and through the opening and about the deflected portion of the next link, and means for stiffening the stock of the link portion at the end from which said connecting portion extends, comprising the deflection of the stock of the link.
6. A bracelet chain comprising a plurality of connected units,'each unit havinga link portion generally rectangular in the form provided with a generally rectangular central opening inwardly from the peripheral edge thereof, and'aconnecting portion the stock between the opening and one end of the link being deflected downwardly, said connecting portion being of a width substantially the width of said opening and exte'nding beyond the end of said link portionat the opposite end and through the opening and about the deflected portion of the next link andribs on the under side of said link portion extending longitudinally of thelink portion between said opening and the end of said link portion atthe end from which said extension projects and in line with said projection to stiffen the stock thereof.
