3 Claims.
This invention relates to rotary braiding machines and particularly to a raceway for the carriers of one set of bobbins of the braiding machine.
My invention will be described in conjunction with a rotary braiding machine having two sets of bobbins rotatable in opposite directions about the braiding point in spaced horizontal planes and in which a raceway supporting member for the upper set of bobbins rotates with the lower set of bobbins and is provided with slots for receiving the thread from the lower bobbins over which slots the carriers for the upper set of bobbins pass in their rotary movement.

Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, of part of a braiding machine and shows an upper bobbin and carrier and the raceway therefor; and
Figure 2 is an elevational view, partly in section and partly broken, away, of a portion of a braiding machine embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a platform rotatably mounted on a fixed hollow standard 11 and carrying a plurality of brackets 12 each of which supports one of the bobbins 13 of the lower set. Suitable gearing, not shown, is provided for causing rotation of a member 21 about standard 11 in the same direction as platform 10 and in unison therewith.
The threads 22 from bobbins 13 extend around suitable guiding and tensioning devices 23 and through a sinuous channel 24 between the adjacent edges of a pair of stationary. cylindrical plates 25 and 26, the. latter-being mounted on a spider 1'7 non-rotatably mounted on standard 11. As bobbins 13 are rotated with platform 10 relatively to plates 25 and 26, channel24 causes threads 22 to be alternately raised from and deposited in slots 27 in a vertical circular flange 28 on member 21 to pass alternately over and under one or more of the bobbins 30 of the upper set as the individual carriers 31 for the latter.

A driving shaft 32 for carriers 31 extends through standard 11 and carries a plate or bracket 33 provided with a rotatable flier 3'7 for each carrier 31. The fliers 37 have axially and angularly spaced lugs and 41 adapted to alternately engage slots in blocks 38 on the related carriers for establishing a driving connection between shaft 32 and the respective carriers. On passing a slot 27 in flange 28 the operative lug 40 or 41 is turned as the flier is rotated by suitable gearing so as not to'engage a thread 22 which may be in slot 27 and another lug 41 or 40 is simultaneously turned to maintain the driving connection for the carrier.
Each carrier 31 is horizontally guidedby a rib 34 thereon engaging alined grooves 35 extending circumferentially of flange 28 between slots 27 and by a groove 42 in its contact block 38 engageaole with alined portions of a guide rib 43 on an inwardly extending annular flange 36 on vvertical flange 28, the flange 36 being cut away in alinement with the slots 2'7. The blocks 38 are preferably of fibre, or other low-friction material, and their outer faces contact with antifriction' rollers 44 rotatably mounted on vertical studs 45 secured to the shelf like sections of flange 36. Rollers 44 are mounted on opposite sides of and between slots 27 at intervals substantially equal to, or less than, half the length of the carrier blocks 38 as measured along the edge thereof which contacts with the rollers.
The above construction permits the rotating parts of the braiding machine to be driven at very high speeds with resulting increase in the productivev capacity of the machine. Inasmuch as the spacing of the rollers 44 is equal to, or less than, half the-length of the carrier blocks 38 the latter are centrifugally held in contact with at least'two of the rollers at all times. This constant two point bearing and guiding contact for the carriers prevents tilting of the latter due to centrifugal forces'as they pass over the slots 2'7 provided in the raceway supporting member 21 for the passage of threads 22 from the lower bobbins 13 to thebraiding point.
As a result smooth operation of the carriers with a minimum of friction in traversing their raceway is assured and noises such as knocking in passing over the thread guide slots are eliminated.
What I claim is:
1. In a rotary braiding machine; a circular track; a plurality of rollers mounted on spaced axes on said track; and a series of bobbin carriers guided to traverse said track, each carrier 1. having a contact surface bearing at all times against a plurality of said rollers.
2. In a rotary braiding machine having a bobbin carrier and a circular member traversed by said carrier having slots for receiving threadsf'l 1 I said flange; and a block on said carrier having a contact face engaging said'rollers, said roll---?.

3. In a rotary braiding machine having a bobbin carrier and a circular member traversed by said carrier having slots for receiving threads extending beyond said bobbin carrier to the braiding point; a sectional annular fiange on vals not greater than half the length of said block along said face to provide two point guiding contact for said carrier at all times.
