R. I., a corporation of Rhode Island Application April 28, 1931. Serial No. 533,381
2 Claims.
he present invention relates to an improvement in shuttles and more particularly to shuttles receiving the skewerless or internal wound ccp wherein the yarn is drawn from the center ci the thread mass.
The object of the invention is to improve this type or" shuttle and the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the shuttle embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section taken on the 'line 2-2 or" Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar section, enlarged, of a portion of the left-hand end of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
The shuttle body 10 is provided with the usual cop cavity 1l to receive the internal wind cop The side and bottom walls of the cop cavity are provided with the usual serrations 13 for holding the cop in place in the cavity. A cavity cover 14 is provided, hinged at one end at 15 on the body of the shuttle. It extends the length of the cop cavity and holds the cop in piace in the cavity. The opposite end of the cop cavity cover is held in closed position by a catch indicated in a general way by the reference character 16. The catch consists of a pivoted double bail 17 which engages two hooks 18 projecting from the end of the cop cavity cover. A coil spring 19 normally tends to turn the bail 1"? clockwise on its pivot pin into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The under side of the free end oi the cavity cover is provided under the catches with two cams 20, each adapted to engage one oi the two portions of the bail 17 and when the cavity cover is pressed downward to close the cover on the cop, the cams 20 engage the two portions of the bail respectively and turn the bail to the left, i. e. counter-clockwise, as viewed in Fig. 3, so that the hooks 18 are depressed with the result that the bail portion 17 may snap over the hooks and engage the hook projections 18. Between the two bail portions is a thread opening 21 (Fig. 4) through which the yarn passes on its way to the shuttle eye 22. The cop cavity cover 14 is pressed downward on the cop and held down by the bail catch 16. Near the catch is provided a support 23 forthe free end of the cavity cover which engages the lateral edges of the cover only and in the illustrated embodiment, it is connected by the portion 24 which is below the level of the ends of the support 23, and leaves a yarn space 25 through which the yarn drawn from the cop passes above the connection 24 (see Fig, 5). rI'he support 23 is a round pin supported i-n aligned holes in the opposite sides of case and created a heavy drag upon the yarn.
This support has also caused a gathering oi lint shed by the yarn as it passes between the cover and the support. The shuttle is also provided with a thread tension device 26 between the opposed faces of which the yarn is drawn and this supplies a tension to the yarn. In threading the shuttle, the cop is rst placed in position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the free end of the yarn is drawn between the jaws of the tension device 26, the coverv is closed, and the yarn is then pulled down into the thread passage 27 by which it is led to the delivery eye 22.
A feature of the invention is the elimination of the cover support tension by providing the shuttle with the edge supports for the cavity cover.
The cop cavity cover is opened by applying pressure with the thumb or iingers of the hand upon the free end of the cover and then sliding the thumb or fingers against the catch bail 17, thereby pushing it beyond the hooks'lS, thereby permitting the free end oi the cover to spring up so that it may be lifted by the hand to afford access to the cop cavity for the insertion of a cop.
What is claimed is:
1. A shuttle having, in combination, a shuttle body provided with the usual copvcavity to receive an internal wind cop, a cop cavity cover to close the top of the cavity fastened at one end of the cavity to the body, a pivoted catch at the other end of the cavity to engage the free end of the cover anda cam on the cover to engage and open the catch on movement of the cover into closed position.
. 2. A shuttle having, in combination, avshuttle body provided with the usual cop cavity to receive an internal wind cop, an imperforate cop cavity cover to close the top of the cavity hinged at one end of the cavity, a cover catch at the opposite end of the cavity, a support for the cover near the catch engaging the side edges of the cover only and having a central recess forming a thread guide space between the cover and the support, said body having a delivery eye and a tension for the yarn between the cop cavity and the eye. v
