' 5 Claims. (01. 248-l' This invention relates to clips and more particularly to clips suitable for use in combination with instrument casings.

In instruments such as aneroid type of sphygmomanometer, it is highly desirable to, provide suitable means whereby the instrument may be readily supported on any available means within easy view of the observer. The present invention, therefore, has for its purpose a combined hook and clip whereby a sphygrnoinanometer may either be hooked on an article such as the cuff forming part of the sphygmomanometer system, when wrapped around a patients arm, or may be clamped to the bedding or clothing of the patient, so that it may be securely held in position for easy reading by the observer. Specifically the invention relates to a clamping member provided with one or more hooks, which member cooperates with one of the walls of the instrument casing so that the instrument may be either clamped or hooked on any available supporting means.

For a clearer understanding of the invention, reference is made to the drawing in which Fig. 1 shows a sphygmomanometer and its clip hooked on one of the folds of an inflatable cuif which is illustrated as being wrapped about the arm of a patient; Fig. 2 is likewise a side view of the sphygnioinanometer of the present invention shown as being attached to a pillow; Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear view; Fig. 4 is an enlarged side View of a spb momanometer provided with the clip of the present invention; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the relation of the'serrated portion of the clips and instrument casing.

As is well-known, sphymornanometers of the aneroid type such as is disclosed in the patent to Collinson #1239555 include a casing 5 within which there is mounted, pressure-responsive actuating mechanism and indicating means, including a needle actuated thereby in indicating relation to a graduated scale or dial, neither of which are shown but both of which are visible through the face 6 at the front of the instrument. The pressure-responsive mechanism is connected by a conduit 7 to a cuff 8, which may be wrapped about the arm 9 of the patient and which may be inflated to any desired pressure by means not shown. It is necessary that the face 6 of the instrument be visible to the person taking the blood pressure measurement all during the time this measurement is being taken, and in accordance with the present invention a combined clip and hook element 10 is provided to support the instrument in convenient reading position. It is usually desirable to have the instrument support- .ment casing and is provided with a serrated edge ed on the inflatable cuff if the patient isnot rep clining, but since the clip would in time injure the material of the inflatable cuff, the hooks 17 are provided so that the instrument may be hooked on one of the folds of the cuff 8. On the 80 other hand, if the patient is reclining the hooks are no longer effective and the instrument may then be clamped to some article of bedding such a pillow 13. The combined clip and hooks of' the present invention satisfy both of these requirements.

structurally this combination clip is provided with two down-turned ears 11 by which it may be pivoted on a pin 15, supported in the upstanding lugs 16 on the back of the casing 5. As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4., the clip is provided at: each edge thereof'with integral hook'members 17 having their free ends extending away from the upper end of the clip in a plane parallel to the main body thereof and sufiiciently spaced therefrom to frictionally engage a fold of the cuff 8 or similar article. The upper end of the clip has an angular portion 18 in flush engagement with the upper surface 21 of the instru- 1 which engages a similar serrated portion formed on the cooperating portion of the casing. The clip is held in the gripping position shown by spiral spring 19 engaging the clip and the back of the casing, but may be opened by depressing handle portion 20, when it is desired to clip the instrument to an object or detach it therefrom.

I claim:

1. Means to attach an instrument casing to a support comprising a clip'pivoted on said casing and having a portion spring-pressed to en-v gage said casing, said clip being provided with an integral hook.

2. Means to attach an instrument casing to a support comprising a clip pivotally mounted at its intermediate portion on said casing and having an end portion spring-pressed to engage said casing, said clip being provided with an integral hook at a point between said pivotal mounting and said end portion.

3. Means to attach an instrument casing to, I a support comprising a clip formed from a single piece of material having means intermediate its ends whereby it is pivotally mounted on said casing, a spring engaging said casing and said clip to press one of the ends of said clip to engage said casing, and an integral hook at each edge of said clip.

4. Means to attach an instrument casing to i a support comprising a clip formed from a single 110 piece of material and having an end portion spring-pressed to engage said casing, and a hook at each edge of said clip, each hook having its free end extending away from said end portion.
