This invention is directed to package winding machines of that type in which the packages are wound by their frictional surface contact with driving rolls. The object of my invention is to provide a novel and simple winding mech- While two winding mechanisms are shown in each embodiment of my invention one only in each embodiment will be specifically described as they are similar in construction, arrange ment and operation. In both embodiments the anism which will effectually break up the ribbon Winding machine frame is denoted by 1 and in wind on the package, i. e., the tendency of the yarn to lay one turn upon a preceding turn thereby causing undesirable lumps or protuberances to be produced in the wound package.
My invention comprises, generally, a package winding mechanism in which either the winding roll shaft or the traverse guide actuating cam shaft is driven at a constant speed, a resilient driving connection being provided between the two shafts and a brake also being employed for intermittently reducing the speed of the cam shaft or the winding roll shaft, as the case may be, against the tension of the resilient driving connection, said brake being perfectly operated through a speed reducing mechanism by the means which drives the constant speed shaft; it being understood that when the brake is released its shaft will speed up due to the in- 2 creased tension or stored up energy of the resilient driving connection, until the shaft reaches its normal speed with respect to that of the constant speed shaft.
Two practical embodiments of my invention are represented in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 represents a detail end view of a winding machine with one embodiment of my improved winding mechanism applied thereto thereto, wherein the cam shaft is driven at a constant speed and the winding roll shaft at a variable speed;
Fig. 5 represents a detail side view of the same; and V Fig. 6 represents a detail longitudinal section showing the resilient driving connection between the cam shaft and the winding roll shaft.
wherein the winding roll shaft is driven at a this frame are rotatably mounted the winding roll shaft 2 andthe traverse guide actuating cam shaft 3. The position of the package 4 being wound is indicated in dotted lines. The winding roll is denoted by 5, the traverse guide by 6 and its actuating cam by 7.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive the winding roll shaft 2 is driven at a constant speed by any suitable means, such, for instance, as an electric motor 8 which is shown as driving the saidshaft through the belt and pulley connection 9 and 10, ll.
The resilient driving connecton between'the winding roll shaft 2 and the traverse guide ac-- tuating cam shaft 3 is shown as comprising the following elements: A gear 12 fast on the winding roll shaft 2 drives a gear 13 whose sleeve 14 is loosely mounted on the traverse guide actuating cam shaft 3. A spring tension driving connection is provided between the driven gear 13 and the cam shaft 3 by means of a coil spring 15, one end of which is attached at 16 to the sleeve 14 and'the other end of which is attached at 17 to a sleeve 18 secured at 19 on the shaft 3. 85 Suitable washers 20 and 21 may be interposed between the opposite ends of the sleeve 14 and. the sleeve 18 and collar 22 respectively, which collar 22 is secured at 23 on the cam shaft 3.
The brake for intermittently retarding and speeding up the cam shaft 3 to breakup the ribbon wind on the package, is shown as operated by the motor drive for the winding roll shaft through a speed reducing mechanism as follows: The motor 8 is shown as having a belt and pulley driving connection 24 and .25, 26 with a longitudinally disposed worm shaft 27 mounted in suitable bearings in a bracket 28 carried by the main frame 1. In the present in-" stance the pulley 26 is loosely mounted on the worm shaft 27 and has a one-way driving connection therewith through a pawl 29 which engages a ratchet 30 secured to said shaft. This worm shaft 27 is provided with a worm 31 which meshes-with a gear 32 on a cross shaft 33 also mounted in suitable bearings in the bracket 28. One end of this cross shaft 33 is provided with an eccentric pin 34 which rides in an elongated slot 35 in one arm 36 of a rock lever fast on a cross shaft 37, the other arm 38 of which lever and another adjustable stop 4'7 on said rod.
The speed reducing mechanism may be employed for the winding mechanisms on both sides of the machine by providing the other motor 8 with a belt and pulley driving connection 48 and 49, with the worm shaft 27, the pulley 50 being loosely mounted on the worm shaft 27 and having a one-way driving connection therewith through a pawl 51 which engages the ratchet 30 fast on the said shaft. It will be understood that the cross shaft 3'7 will carry the lever arm 38 of the brake connection for the other winding'mechanism.
In the alternative form shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the cam shaft 3 is driven at a constant speed and the winding roll shaft at a variable speed. In this form the electric motor 8 drives the cam shaft at a constant speed through the belt and pulley driving connection 9 and 10, 11," the pulley 11 being fast on the cam shaft in this instance instead of fast on the winding roll shaft as in the first described form.
In this alternative form the resilient driving is connected by a vertical rod 39 with one-arm with respect to the other and means for intermittently actuating said retarding means.
2. In a winding machine, a package winding roll, a winding roll shaft, a traverse guide, a traverse guide actuating cam shaft, a resilient driving connection between the two shafts comprising a driving gear fast on one shaft, a driven gear loose on the other shaft and a tension spring connecting the driven gear with its shaft, means 'for retarding the rotation of said other shaft and means for intermittently actuating said retarding means.
3. In a winding machine, a package winding roll,-a winding roll shaft, a traverse guide, a
traverse guide actuating cam shaft and means for causing the cam shaft to alternately slow down and speed up, said means including a resilient driving connection between the two shafts, a brake for the cam shaft, and means for intermittently actuating said brake.
4. In a winding machine, a traverse guide, a traverse guide actuating cam shaft, a package winding roll, a winding roll shaft and means for causing the winding roll shaft to alternately slow down and speed up, said means including a resilient driving connection between the two shafts, a brake for the winding roll shaft, and means for intermittently actuating said brake.
5. In a winding machine, a package winding roll; -a winding roll shaft, driving means therefor,-,, a traverse guide, a traverse guide actuating cam' shaft and means for causing the cam shaft to alternately slow down and speed up, said means including a resilient driving connecconnection between the cam shaft and the wind-z. tion between the two shafts, a brake for the ing roll shaft is reversed, the driving gear 12 being fast on thecan'i shaft, the driven gear 13 and its sleeve being loosely mounted on the winding roll shaft and the coil spring 15 yieldingly connecting the sleeve with the winding. roll shaft.
- Also, in this alternative form the brake drum 44 with which the brake is arranged to be brought into and out of frictional contact, is fast on the winding roll shaft instead of on the cam shaft.
The remaining parts of this alternative form are arranged and operated as in the first described form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and therefore they will not be again specifically described.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and effective means for effectually breaking up the ribbon wind on a package by introducing a resilient driving connection between the winding roll shaft and the traverse guide actuating cam shaft, together with a brake for intermittently retarding and speeding up the cam shaft or the roll shaft, as the case may be, it being understood that the timing and extent of the variable'speed may be readily adjusted-to suit different conditions.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention,
connection and henceI do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiments herein shown and de- Y scribed, but
what I claim is:- j 1.
