18 Claims. (01. 285-49) This invention relates to a socketed wall, and
an object of the invention is the provision of a wall provided with a socket for the reception of a detachable member. Another object is the 5 provision of an efficient and inexpensive method of producing a socket for a wall. A further object of the invention is the provision of a socket for a sheet metal wall, which will be maintained strongly in the opening. and in one adaptation of the invention is well adapted for the pro vision of a socket for sheet metal containers, in which a detachable plug or cap is inserted, or onto which it is attached in order to seal fluids within the container. My new method is economical and highly eflicient for the purposes indicated.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. l is a top plan view, with parts broken away, showing a container wall with a plug inserted therein, the portion broken away exposing an annular groove which provides a seat for a gasket, which may be inserted under the cap or plug;

The preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a sheet metal wall with ap- 5 propriately depressed portion 13 and raised shoulder portion 14. This wall is also provided with an appropriate aperture or orifice 15. In the preferred embodiment as illustrated, the orifice or aperture is circular in form, and the 7 raised shoulder portions of the wall are octagonal in form.
As shown in Fig. 4, my anchoring device, or device for affixing the socket to the container wall, is in the present form a tube 16, one end 17 7 of which is octagonal in cross-section, and of cylindrical cross-section at the other end 18; it will also be noted that the octagonal perimeter is much greater than that of the circular end of the anchoring device. In the cylindrical end of the anchoring device is formed an annular groove 19, which provides a seat for a gasket to be described hereinafter. Fig. 7 shows the socket 20 provided with an octagonal flange 21 inserted in the octagonal portion 17 of anchoring device 16. In Fig. 8, the octagonal portion of anchoring device 16 has been pressed down over the octagonal flange 21 of the socket member, and a smooth surface is presented as shown in Fig. 8 after such pressing because of the cutouts 22, which cause the octagonal portions to fit in miter joints 23. Suitable gasket material or sealing material 24 may be inserted between the octagonal flange of socket member 21, and the octagonal portion of anchoring device 16, in order to insure a more fluid tight joint.
The cylindrical portion of the anchoring device 16 may then be inserted in the circular orifice 15 of the container wall, and the octagonal wall, and the octagonal portion of anchoring deorifice 15 of the container wall, and the octagonal shoulder portions 14 of the container wall. Suitable gasket or sealing material 25 may be inserted between the container wall and the octagonal portion of anchor 16. 105
The cylindrical portion of anchor 16 is then pressed outwardly and downwardly to form a tight fitting engagement over the circumference of the orifice of the container wall. A suitable gasket member 26 may then be placed around 110 suitably threaded plug 27 and the plug then turned into threaded portion 28 of the socket.
It may be seen that in operation, the gasket material 26 will be compressed as plug 2'? is tightened more thoroughly, and thus a very tight seal will be made by the gaskets being pressed into groove or recess 19. It may also be seen that the anchoring device holds the socket very rigidly to the container wall, resists strongly any strain which may be placed on the socket from either side of the wall, and this is especially desirable where there is a possibility that the socket may receive heavy blows from the exterior of the container. It can also be seen that the process of manufacture is relatively simple in that the operations are few and necessitate the use of a relatively small amount of material in the preparation of the socketed wall.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect and in describing my method of manufacture, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the details of construction as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sheet metal wall provided with an orifice and a shoulder surrounding said orifice, a socket provided with a flange, and means for aflixing said socket to the sheet metal wall, said means comprising a tube, one end of which clampingly embraces the flange of said socket, and other end of which is extended through the orifice of said wall, and pressed down over the perimeter of said orifice.
2. A sheet metal wall provided with an orifice, a socket provided with a flange, and means for aflixing said socket to the sheet metal wall, said means comprising a tube, one end of which clampingly embraces the flange of said socket, and the other end of which is extended through the orifice of said wall and pressed down over the perimeter of said orifice.
3. A sheet metal wall provided with an orifice having a polygonal shoulder surrounding said orifice, a socket provided with a polygonal flange, and means for affixing said socket to the sheet metal wall, said means comprising a tube, one end of which is polygonal and pressed around the polygonal flange of said socket, the other end of which is inserted into the orifice of said wall, and pressed down over the perimeter of said orifice, and onto the said polygonal shoulder.
4. A sheet metal wall provided with an orifice, a socket provided with a polygonal flange, and means for afiixing said socket to said sheet metal wall, said means comprising a tubular member one end of which is polygonal and made to embrace clampingly the polygonal flange of said socket, the other end of which is protruded through the orifice of said wall and pressed down over the perimeter of said orifice.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a wall having an opening and a flat rim lying generally normal the axis of the opening and extending radially to the opening with the inner edge of said rim terminating in the plane of the rim and defining said opening, of a ring member having a pair of folds, one receiving and secured upon the rim of said wall,
and a nipple having a flange secured in the other fold of said ring member and formed to receive a closure plug.
6. In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in a wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple or bushing having a bore extended therethrough, and an external flange on said nipple, a flange formed on the container wall about the opening, a member providing two oppositely opening grooves one receiving said container wall flange and the other said nippleflange, said grooves being spaced apart in the direction of the axis of the opening in the container wall and each of said grooves opening generally radially with respect to said container wall opening, and a plug for said bore.
'7. In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in a wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple having a bore extending therethrough, and an external flange on said nipple, a flange on the container wall about the opening, a member providing a groove opening away from the container opening and a second groove opening toward the container opening, with said container wall flange disposed in the first named groove and said nipple flange disposed in the second named groove, said grooves being spaced apartin the direction of the axis of the opening in the container wall and each of said grooves opening generally radially with respect to said opening, and a plug for the nipple bore.
8. In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in the wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple having a bore extending therethrough, and an external flange on said nipple, a flange on the container wall about the opening, a member providing a groove opening away from the container opening and a second groove opening toward the container opening, with said container wall flange disposed in the first named groove and said nipple flange disposed in the second named groove, said first and second grooves being spaced apart in the direction of the axis of the opening in the container wall and each of said grooves opening generally radially with respect to said opening, a plug for the nipple bore, said member including a flange extending over said container wall flange on the outer side thereof, and an external flange on said plug disposed over and outwardly of said groove member flange.
9. In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in the wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple having a bore extending therethrough, and an external flange on said nipple, a flange formed on the container wall about the opening, a member providing two oppositely opening grooves one receiving said wall flange and the other said nipple flange, said two oppositely opening grooves being spaced apart in the direction of the axis of the opening in the container wall and each of said grooves opening generally radially with respect to said container wall opening, a plug for said bore, and an external flange on said plug cooperating with said grooves and the others of said flanges for effecting closure of said container wall opening.
10. In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in the wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple having a threaded bore extending therethrough and an external flange onsaid nipple, a member providing two oppositely opening grooves one receiving the portion of said container wall disposed about said opening and the other said nipple flange, said two oppositely opening grooves being spaced apart in the direction of the axis of the opening in the container wall and each opening generally radially with respect to said container wall opening, a threaded plug for said bore, said member including a flange extended over said container wall, and an external flange on said plug cooperating with said grooves and the others of said flanges for effecting closure of said container wall opening.
11. In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in the wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple having a bore extending therethrough, and an external flange on said nipple, a member providing two oppositely opening grooves one receiving the portion of said container wall disposed about said opening and the other said nipple flange, said two oppositely opening grooves being spaced apart in the direction of the axis of the opening in the container wall and each of said grooves opening generally radially with respect to the opening in the container wall, and a plug for said bore.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination with a wall having an opening and a flat rim lying generally normal the axis of the opening and extending radially to the opening with the inner edge of said rim terminating in the plane of the rim and defining said opening, of a ring member having a pair of folds, one receiving and secured upon the rim of said wall, and a nipple having a flange secured in the other fold of said ring member and formed to receive a closure plug.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination with a wall having an opening and a flat rim lying generally normal the axis of the opening, a nipple having-a flange disposed in a plane generally parallel the plane of said rim and lying inwardly of and beneath said rim, and a ring member having an intermediate portion lying radially between the rim and the flange on said nipple, the outer end of said ring member being turned out radially over the top of the rim and the inner end of said ring member being turned in radially beneath the bottom of the flange on said nipple.
14. In a device of the class described, the combination with a wall having an opening and a flat rim lying generally normal the axis of the opening, a nipple having a flange disposed in a plane generally parallel the plane of said rim and lying inwardly of and beneath said rim, a
ring member having an intermediate portion lying radially between the rim and the flange on said nipple, the outer end of said ring member being turned out radially over the top of the rim and the inner end of said ring member being turned in radially beneath the bottom of the flange on said nipple, and a gasket interposed between the rim and the intermediate portion of said ring member.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a wall having an opening and a flat rim lying generally normal the axis of the opening, a nipple having a flange disposed in a plane generally parallel the plane of said rim and lying inwardly of and beneath said rim, a ring member having an intermediate portion lying radially between the rim and the flange on said nipple, the outer end of said ring member being turned out radially over the top of the rim and the inner end of said ring member being turned in radially beneath the bottom of the flange on said nipple, a gasket interposed between the rim and the intermediate portion of said ring member, a plug member threaded in said nipple and having a flange overlying the radially outturned outer end of the ring member, and a gasket between the flange on the plug member and the radially outturned outer end of the ring member.

In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in a wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple or bushing having a bore extended therethrough, an external flange on said nipple, a member providing a groove for the reception of the flange of said nipple, and a second groove for the reception of the wall of said container surrounding said opening.

In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in a wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple or bushing having a bore extended therethrough, an external flange on said nipple, a member providing a groove for the reception of the flange of said nipple, and a second groove opening in a direction opposite to that of said first mentioned groove and receiving the wall of said container surrounding said opening.
18. In combination with a metal container having an opening formed in a wall thereof, a closure structure for said opening comprising a nipple or bushing having a bore extended therethrough, an external flange on said nipple, a member providing a groove for the reception of the flange of said nipple, a second groove for the reception of the wall of said container surrounding said opening, and a plug for said nipple and having an external flange.
