Patented (Jet. 10, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TILE SUPPORT AND FASTENER Application March 26, 1932. Serial No. 601,354
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a support and fastener designed more especially for use with mission roof tiles;
Heretofore it has been the practice to use 5 strips of wood to which the tiles have been fastened after being placed astride the same, or else the tiles have been held in place with cement.
The present invention aims to provide a fastener which is cheaper to make and apply than the means heretofore used, can be more quickly applied than other forms, and results in a roof which is better finished and more conveniently repaired than otherwise possible.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the
invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise 2O embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a transverse section through a portion of a roof provided with the present improvement.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the fasteners.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a plate which can be substantially triangular with wings 2 extending in opposite directions respectively from the base thereof, each of these wings being formed with openings 3. Connected to one edge of the plate 1 by spot welding or any other suitable means is a Wire 4 forming a bendable stem which projects beyond the upper end of plate 1.
The fastener thus far described can be made of any suitable material, such as galvanized iron, copper, or the like.
In practice the bottom tiles B are adapted to be secured to the deck D of a roof by means of nails N in the usual manner. The fasteners constituting the present invention are placed at proper points on the deck in the spaces between the tiles B and are secured to the deck by means of nails or the like driven through one or both openings in each of the wings 2. The top tiles T are then placed astride tiles B. The openings O in these tiles are located where they can receive the adjacent stems formed by wires 4 and thereafter these stems are bent downwardly on the tiles in which they are seated so as to hold them to the deck as will be apparent by referring to Figure 2.
By providing more than one opening in each wing 2 it becomes possible to fasten the device in place even though one of the openings should be over a space in the deck D.
By using fasteners such as described it becomes unnecessary to provide wooden strips under the top tiles and/0r cement whereby tiles can be fastened properly in position.
The fasteners can be produced at low cost, are easily installed and produce results superior to those possible with fastening means heretofore employed.
What is claimed is:
1. As an article of manufacture a one-piece tile-fastener including an upstanding plate having a portion bent at an angle to provide an attaching base and a stem fixedly joined to the plate and having a bendable end projecting therefrom for upward insertion into a tile being lowered onto the plate.
2. As an article of manufacture a tile fastener including a plate having a laterally bent portion forming an attaching base, and a wire integral with the plate and projecting therefrom to form a bendable tile engaging stem.
