The rather sudden opening of the cover has the tendency to carry the cover upward after the lever 9 has reached the extent of its upward movement and this added movement is gradually checked by the spring 18 which is compressed and the cover is finally returned to a position of rest with the pin at the lower end of slot 14 when the spring again has expanded. Thus it will be seen that a very efiloient and simple means has been provided for effectively raising the cover and while all this may be accomplished by manually raising the lever 7, it is preferred to use a power means set in motion by a simple key mechanism mounted on the front or" the housing, and which means will now be more fully described.
Mounted in the lower part of the housing are brackets 20 and 21 having upstanding ears forming bearings for the shafts 22, 5 and 8 and which are driven through any suitable gearing, such as shown in Fig. 2, from the driven shaft 5. Thus shaft 8 is always rotating.
Rigidly mounted on this shaft is a ratchet wheel 23 and loosely mounted thereon are the member 24, spring drum 25, ratchet wheels 26 and 27 and arm 7. Arm 7 is rigidly connected to ratchets 26 and 27 by pins 28,.see Figs. 4, 7 and 15, so that they all turn in unison about shaft 8.
Drum carries a spring interiorly thereof and the spring is fastened at its outer end by a struckout portion 30 on drum 25 engaging a hole formed in the end of the spring, while the inner end thereof is similarly fastened at 31 to an annular portion 24 on member 24 which encircles hub 25 of drum 25. This spring is wound up by rotation of member 24 while the housing 25 is held relatively stationary. This is accomplished in the following manner: A pawl 32 is adapted to engagethe ratchet 23 when the spring has unwound because of the fact that the outer end 33 of the spring 29 will at that time be near the inner side of the casing 25 and will rock the lever 34 clockwise about pivot 35 as seen in Fig. 6. The lever 34 has the end which engages the spring notched as at 36 so as to straddle the spring and move therewith, see Fig. 12. When pawl 32 engages ratchet 23, part 24 is rotated and winds the spring 29 until the proper tension has been given thereto, whereupon the outer end of the spring is caused to move away from the inner wall of the casing 25 and rock the lever counterclockwise, as seen in Fig. 6, and thus withdraw the pawl 32 from engagement with the driven ratchet 23. The member 24 is kept from reverse rotation by means of pawl 37 mounted on pivot 38 and spring-pressed by means of spring 39 into engagement with. ratchet 40 integral with member 24. A cover plate 67 mounted integral with member 24 protects the spring 29 from dust and dirt.
The energy thus stored in spring 29 is used to raise the cover 3 when the drum 25 is released.
'The drum is normally held stationary by a projection 41 on lever 42 engaging one of four struckup lugs 43 spaced 90 apart on the outer face of drum 25, but when the lever 7 is in its lowermost position it is released as shown in Fig. 7. This allows the drum to rotate just slightly past the projection 41, but it is kept from rotating farther by pin 44 engaging one of the lugs 43 spaced oppositely in respect thereto. This pin 44 is spring-pressed to the left as shown in Fig. 5 and moved by cam 45 to the right into the path of lugs 43. The pin 44 has one fiat face 46, best seen in Fig. 14, and projects through ratchet wheels 26 and 27 and through a hole 47 in arm 7 having a complementary shape to the end of the pin 44, see Fig. 15. The fiat face of the pin 44 engages lugs 43.
The tendency of the spring 29 is to rotate the arm 7 and ratchet members 26 and 27 in a clockwise direction, as seen in Fig. 4, through the intermediate members 25, 43 and 44, but is unable to do so as long as the pawl 47 is in engagement with ratchet 27 mounted on a pivot 43 fastened to the framework 21. To release this pawl a lever 49 mounted on pivot 48 is provided with a pin 50 which when rocked to the right in Fig. 4 will release the pawl from engagement with ratchet 27. This allows the energy stored in the spring to raise the arm through connections 25, 43 and 44 until the arm 7 is in its extreme upward position, at which time the left end of the pin 44, in Fig. 5, has come down off the cam sur face 45 and is retracted by action of the spring 68.
The drum then is free to rotate until one of the projections 43 engages the lug 41 on lever 42 which is carried to its uppermost position by spring 53 when the lever 7 is raised.
The lever 7 is kept in raised position by pawl 54 engaging the ratchet 26 and when it is desired to lower the cover, lever 49 is rocked to the left to release this pawl and allow the lever 7 to descend clue to the weight of cover 3. When the lever has almost reached the limit of its downward movement it strikes projection 55 on lever 42 and the final closing movement of the cover cushioned because of spring 53 acting through lever 42 against downward movement of lever 7. At the same time the lowermost lug 43 is released from lever 42 and the pin 44 which has been moved to the right by cam 45 again engages the uppermost lug 43 and the device is ready to be operated again. Spring 56 yieldingly holds the desired pawl in engagement with its respective ratchet and against pin 50. To rock the lever 49 a simple toggle mechanism is provided comprising lever 51 which is moved back and forth by bell crank 52 pivoted at 57. This bell crank is in turn rocked by a pivoted bell crank 58 having a notched end 59 engaging a projection 60 on lever 52. This bell crank is in turn rocked by levers 61 and 62, the latter being pivoted at 63 and having two projecting arms 64 and 65 which when pressed, alternately rock lever 49 through the connecting levers 61, 58, 52 and 51 to either raise or lower the cover 3. Depressing the member 65 opens the cover and depressing lever 64 closes it. Obviously other arrangements may be used to rock lever 49, but the present means places the operating key near the operators hands and therefore is preferred.
The keys may be suitably marked with an O for open and a C for close as shown in Fig. 1, but other designations may be used and obviously it is not necessary that they be marked at all, if desired. Lever 58, Fig. 3, is held to the right or to the left by means of spring 63 which is always on the corresponding side of pivot 69 as is the lever 58.
The cover 3 is preferably provided with a glass panel 66 so that the operator may view the work as the typing progresses, but this is not essential to the operation of the machine.
The operation of the device is as follows: With the; cover in closed position as shown in Figs. 4

The key member 65 is depressed, thus rcckinglever 49 to the right to releasepawl 47, as seen in Fig. 4, through intermediate levers 62, '61, 58, 52 and 51-. This permits the spring 29 to rotate the drum and consequently move the lever 7 upward. This in turnrocks lever 9 which forces thecover open, the opening movement of the cover being cushioned by pin 15 acting against spring 18. 'At approximately the time the cover reaches its full open position, the pin ie is retracted by spring The cover is held open at this time by engagement of pawl 54 with ratchet 26. The drum 25 now being free to rotate, rotates until one of the lugs 43 comes into contact with the projection 41 on lever 42 which at this time is in a raised position, thus stopping rotation thereof.
When it is desired to close the cover, member 64 is depressed rocking lever 49 so as to release pawl 54 and permit the cover to descend of its own weight. As it approaches the downward extent'of its travel, pin 44 is forced into the path of member .43 by cam 45 and lever 7 moves lever 42 downwardly releasing the drum 25 which can .now rotate until the stop adjacent the pin 44 comes into engagement therewith and the mechanism is again in a position to raise the cover by depression ofthemember 65. It will be noted that after the lever 42 is depressed the lug 43 which was in engagement with the stop 41 will now be moved just slightly past the stop 41, see Fig. '7, and consequently the stop cannot again move into engagement with the same lug 43 to prevent the spring from raising lever '7 when the pawl 47 is released.

Having thus fully disclosed an embodiment of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent oi the United States is:
1. In a sound-deadening housing for typewriters,-the combination with a cover for a typewriter of self-contained power-operated mechanism for opening said cover, means operatively associated with the cover for effecting the closure of said cover by gravity independently of said power-operated mechanism, and manually actuated mechanism operatively associated with the cover and the power operated mechanism for controlling the opening and closing of said cover.
2. In a sound-deadening housing for typewriters, the combination with a cover for a typewriter, of a motor, connections between said motor and said cover for opening said cover by power from said motor, means operatively associated with the cover for effecting the closure of said cover by gravity, and means operatively'associated with the motor and the cover for holding the motor inoperative during the closure of said cover; i
3. In mechanism for operating a cover, the
combination with a cover, of a motor, means connecting said motor to said cover to open the latter by the power of said motor, means operatively associated with the cover for effecting the closure of said cover by gravity, and means operatively associated with the cover for storing power in said motor independently of the closing of said cover.

In mechanism for operating a typewriter cover, the combination with a motor, of power transmission mechanism operatively associated with the motor and the cover of a typewriter to open such cover by power from said motor, means operatively associated with the motor and cover for controlling said power transmission mechanism to effect the opening of said cover by power from said motor and the closure of said cover by gravity independently of said motor, and a source of power operatively connected with the motor separate and independent of the closing operation of said cover.
5. 8. In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with a motor, of power transmission mechanism connected between said motor and the cover to be operated and comprising an actuating arm, reversely arranged ratchet wheels connected to said arm, pawls associated with said ratchet wheels, means for driving the wheels through said pawls, and means for releasing one of said pawls to effect the opening of said cover and the other pawl for effecting the closing of said cover.

In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with a motor comprising a rotatable element of a plurality of cireumierentially spaced lugs on said rotatabie element, power transmission mechanism adapted to be connected to the pressed pin, a cam in position to move said springpressed pin for engagement by one of said lugs when the cover'is closed, and means for restrainthe opening of said cover bypower from. said i I no 1. and

10. In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with a motor comprising a rotatable element, of a plurality of circumferentially spaced lugs on said rotatable element, power transmission mechanism comprising a pivoted arm, a spring-pressed detent carried by said arm, a stationary cam for moving said detent into the path of said lugs for engagement by one of them when the cover is closed, pawl and ratchet mechanism for preventing said motor from opening said cover, means for releasing said pawl and ratchet mechanism to cause said motor through one of said lugs and said cletent to operate said power transmission mechanism to open said cover, and latch mechanism in position to engage one of said lugs to prevent rotation of said rotatable element after said power transmission mechanism has been operated to open said cover.
11. In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with a motor having a rotatable element, of a plurality of lugs circumferentially spaced on said rotatable element, power transmission mechanism comprising a pivoted arm, a spring-pressed detent secured to said arm for bodily movement therewith in position to be moved into the path of said lugs, a stationary cam for moving said detent into such path when said arm is in cover-closing position, pawl and ratchet mechanism for preventing said motor from moving said arm to ceveropening position, means for releasing said pawl and ratchet mechanism to cause saidmotor through one of said lugs and said detent to move said arm to cover-opening position, pawl and ratchet mechanism for preventing rotation of said rotatable element after said arm has been moved to cover-opening position, additional pawl and ratchet mechanism for holding the cover in open position against closure by gravity, and m ans for releasing said additional pawl and ratchet mechanism to permit said cover to close by gravity independently of said motor,
12. In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with a motor, of power transmission mechanism comprising an arm operated by said motor to move said cover, a pawl and ratchet device associated with said arm to hold the cover open, and another pawl and ratchet device associated with said arm for holding the cover closed.
13. In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with motor comprising a rotatable element, of power transmission mechanism comprising an arm adapted to be connected to the cover to be opened and closed, pawl and ratchet mechanism for holding the cover closed, additional pawl and ratchet mechanism for holding the cover open, and latch mechanism for preventing rotation of said rotatable element after said cover has been moved to open position and until said cover has again been closed.
14. In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with a motor, of power transmission mechanism operatively connected to a cover to be operated, operative connections between said motor and said power transmission mechanism for normally urging the latter to open the cover, mechanism for releasably restraining said power transmission mechanism against opening of said cover, means for releasing said restraining mechanism without moving said motor to thereby cause said motor through said connections and said power transmission mechanism to open said cover, means associated with the cover and normally biasing the cover toward closed position, mechanism associated with the cover for holding the cover in open position, and means for releasing said last-named holding mechanism to effect the closure of said cover.
15. In apparatus for operating a cover, the combination with a spring motor comprising a spring connected between a normally stationary element and a rotatable element, of power transmission mechanism adapted tobe connected to the cover to be operated, connections between said rotatable element and said power transmission mechanism to cause said spring to normally urge said. power transmission mechanism acting on said rotatable element to open said cover, pawl and ratchet mechanism for restraining said power transmission mechanism against movement to open said cover, and means for releasing said pawl and ratchet mechanism to permit said spring to exert its power to open said cover.

In a sound deadening housing for typewriters, the combination with a closure, of spring operating means for opening said closure, means associated with the closure and its operating means for disconnecting said operating means from said closure after said closure has been opened, means for closing said closure while the latter is detached from said spring operating means, and additional means associated with the spring operated means for storing energy in said spring to compensate ior the energy lost during the opening movement of said closure.
32. In a sound deadening housing for typewriters, the combination with a closure, of spring operating means for opening said closure, means associated with the closure and its operating means for disconnecting said operating means from said closure after said closure has been opened, means for closing said closure while the latter is detached from said spring operating means, and additional means associated with the spring operated means for storing energy in said spring to compensate for the ener y lost during the opening movement of said closure comprising a constantly driven member normally disconnected from said spring operating means but selectively connectable to said spring operating means to store ener y in said spring operating means after said spring operating means has lost a predetermined amount of energy.
33. In a sound deadening closure for typewriters, the combination with a closure, of a motor operatively associated with the closure for opening said closure, said motor having a coiled spring adapted to expend its energy in opening said closure, means normally holding said closure and motor disconnected from each other as said closure moves to closed position, a continuously driven shaft operatively associated with the motor, and means operable to connect said continuously driven shaft with said spring to wind said spring to thereby store in said spring energy lost upon successive openings of said closure by said spring motor.
34. In a sound deadening closure for typewriters, the combination with a closure, of a spring motor for opening said closure having a coiled spring therein adapted to expend its energy in opening said closure, means for holding said closure and motor disconnected from each other as said closure moves to inoperative position, a continuously driven shaft, and means automatically operable to connect said continuously driven shaft with said spring to wind said spring to thereby store in said spring energy lost upon successive openings of said closure by said spring motor comprising pawl and ratchet mechanism normally out of engagement with each other to disconnect said continuously rotating shaft from said spring but movable into engagement with each other to connect said continuously rotating shaft with said spring by means controlled by the tension in said spring.
35. The combination with a sound deadening closure or housing for typewriters, of a power winding mechanism for spring motors operatively connected to open the closure, an element connected to said spring for winding the same, a continuously rotating shaft, a ratchet on said continuously rotating shaft, a pawl connected to said element adapted to be moved into engagement with said ratchet to thereby cause said element to rotate with said ratchet, and an operative connection between said pawl and a portion of said spring for moving said pawl into engagement with said ratchet when said spring becomes unwound a predetermined amount.
36. In a sound deadening housing for typewriters, the combination with means for covering a typewriter, of a self-contained power device for raising said covering means, said power means being detachably mounted on said covering means and being removable only when the covering means is in a predetermined open position, and means for holding the covering means in open position after the power means is removed, said power means comprising a spring motor, a winding element connected to the motor for tensioning the spring thereof, a rotating shaft driven by the spring, a ratchet on the shaft, a pawl connected. to the winding element and adapted to be moved into engagement with the ratchet to thereby cause the shaft to rotate with the winding element and an operative connection formed between the spring and the pawl and operative, when the spring is unwound to a pre determined degree, to move said pawl into engagement with the ratchet.
37. In a sound deadening housing for typewriters, having a shiftable cover, the combination with the cover of cover actuating mechanism, and a spring motor for operating said actuating mechanism, said motor comprising a spring connected between a normally stationary elem I and a shiftable element, said shiitable elen t being operatively connected with the cover actuating mechanism whereby the spring normally urges said actuating mechanism to open the cover, latch means operatively associated with the shiftable element for restraining the operation of the cover actuating mechanism and means to release said latch means to permit the spring to exert its influence to open the cover.
38. In a cover raising mechanism, the combination with a cover to be raised, of means operatively associated with the cover for raising same, said means comprising a shiftable member, a spring operatively associated therewith for shifting said member, an operating member detachably connectible to the shiftable member and operatively associated with the cover to actuate the same, means for holding the operating member against cover actuating movement, means for releasing said holding means, means for hold- 1 ing the cover in open position, and means adapted for operative connection with a power actuating part for automatically storing up energy in the spring.
39. In a cover actuating mechanism, the combination with a shiftable cover adapted to move between open and closed position, of forming a motor for actuating said cover, cover actuating mechanism operatively associated with said cover and said motor to transfer the power of the motor and apply it for shifting the cover, and means operatively associated with said cover actuating mechanism to provide a resilient buffer for cushioning the movement of the cover at an extremity of its operative movement.
