' 12 claims. (c1. ,105?223) This-.invention relates 4to journal boxf and frame connections and comprises -all the features of novelty herein disclosed. An object of the invention is to provide an improved seat plate construction for rockably. mounting a load carrying member-With respect to a journal box. Another object is to provide a seat plate construction which provides for close yapproach of .the :load carrying member to the; box, thus diminishing over-allheight. To these ends and also to improvev generally "upon devices of this character, the invention clonsistsinfthe various matters hereinafter described and claimed. In 'its' broader aspects, the invention is not necessarily limited Lto. the lspecific construction selected for illustrative purposes in the accompanying drawing in which i v Fig. .l is one-half end view and one-half cross section of a portion of an-.axle box and its associated members.
Fig. 2 is a side View. Y Y y Fig. 3 isa vertical,A longitudinal section.
Fig. 4 is aplan viewof onehalfof the box ,and associatedparts'.r i
Fig. 5 is an isometric view of one ofthe lower seat plates.- ,l f t The knumeral l0 indicates ishaft or 1axle .carrying a raceway sleeve i2 for a roller bearing 14 having cage'rings 16. The rollers runinan outer sleeve or raceway 18 carried in ahousing .or axle box 20 andthe cage rings are guided by `'bronze `rings 22riveted tooiianges'on the box. The'box is preferably divided into'two sections whieh meet at axle, level, as indicated-at 2E,V the `-upper section having depending portions24 vembracing a lower section 26, the two sections being Vclamped t'ogetherb'yx bolts28.` At each side, the box carries rspaced lpedestal flanges 3i)` which are covered by wear plates 32, the latter projecting from a fiat body plate 34cm/Tering the side of the of the box. One end'of the box also carries arcuate liner plates 38, preferably of bronze, to takethe Wearof the adjacent Wheel hub.
The foregoing is Anot per se apart of my invention which .resides chiey in the construction by which load carryingV members are sup- Vported on the box. At the top ofthel box and at each side Yof the center is a rectangular cavity 40 receiving and confining, from any material shifting, a lower seat plate comprising a base 42 and an upwardly` `projecting end lug 44. The base has its upper surface 46 convex or crowned longitudinally of the axle and the box on'a curve of large radius. There is a small clearance at portion and the lower surface of thisis rounded ,longitudinallyof the axle andthe box as indiy Ycated in Fig.Y 3 to insure a clearancev during flugs andfcavities have a little clearanceland Abars canfrock .a little and'adjust themselves to the, upper seat plate. 'The provision of :the two ,the one which usually is subjectedto the greatest 48 between thel top of the box7 and an. equalizer or. upper seat plate 50. Plate'50 has a comparatively thin section along its longitudinal middle ofthe above mentioned surfaces 46 of the lower Aseat plate. The upper seat plate has the middle of its opposite sides cut out to leave Y,cavities at 54,. each cavityreceiving one of the lugs 44. The
theirk adjacent side surfaces are curved on sub'-` -stantially the same radius so thatthe upper seat plate and the .two lOWerseatplateScan yhave a,
"rocking motion with respect-to one another without allowing. the upper seat plateto shift lbodily orfbecome displaced from theboxv v. v
to v
fThe seat plate 50 has transverse rfi'nforcing lrbsor Webs 56 running' crossw-ise .of the box :whilevextensions of theplate have parallel ribs GOmaking channels462-V for loadcarrying members such'as equalizer bars 64. The bottomv ,of eachV channel is slightly 1 crowned transversely of the seatplate and box so that the ,equalizerv lower` seat plates at opposite sides of the'jaxle reduces the overall .height because. the kequalizer d bars can be-broughtf close to the box with'only the thicknessof theupper seatplateand the little clearance at 481 intervening.L The load is Vnot only 10W-.with respect 'gto the box but .is .better distributed onV the bearing rollers;` the tendency Vbeing to vvdecrease-the load on that roller which is directly over .the axle, this being stress. v
