This invention relates to woodworking tools, and more particularly to a carpenters plane.
, One object of the present inventionis to provide a plane of the above nature having means for laterally adjusting the cutting blade, said means being located above the clamping plate in a readily accessible position.
A further object is to provide a carpenters plane of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to adjust and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in View there'has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
This invention is an improvement upon the invention disclosed in my prior application, Serial No. 594,088, filed February 19, 1932.

It has been customary in the past when setting the cutting blade of a plane in the proper longitudinai position, to operate under the unscientific cut and try method, and duplicate settings could be obtained only by the use of considerable time and effort. adjustment of the cutting blade was generally accomplished'by complicated means under the cutter blade. i
By means of the present invention the above and other disadvantages have been avoided by providing a micrometer head on the adjusting screw by means of which the cutter bladeniay be readily set with great precision, and also providing simple and easily operated means above the cutter blade for adjusting it in lateral position.
Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates the body of the plane having the customary fiat smooth bottom plate 11 and two integral parallel longitudinal side walls 12 and 13 with curved upper edges.
The plate 11 is strengthened'by a pair of upright front and rear cross-ribs 14 and 15 integral with thebottom plate 11 and side walls 12 and 13, the rear rib 15 being considerably higher than Moreover, the lateral the front rib 14. Intermediate the twocross-ribs edge of the rear cross-rib 15.
In order to lock the cutting blade 18 in any desiredposition,provision is made of an adjustable clamping plate 20 having a wedge shapedforward nose 21, and a reduced rear section 21a provided with a longitudinal slot 22. At the ends of the slot 22 are a pair of integral upstanding lugs 23 and 24 which are adapted to limit the'up and down movements of a rectangular traveling block or nut 25. The upper end of the traveling block 25 is providedwith a tapped hole for surrounding the threaded shank 26 of a jack screw 27, while thelower end of said block 25 is loosely fitted within a rectangular hole 28 transversely formed inthe upper end of the cutting 3 blade 18. The forward or lower end of the jack screw 27 is provided with a reduced'extremity 29, rotatably journaled in the lug 23, while the rear end of said screw 27 has an enlarged section 30 journaled in the rear or upper lug 24 of the clamping plate 20. The jack screw 2'7 is adapted'to be locked against longitudinal movement by means or an upwardly extending pin 31 rigidly. mounted within said upper lug 24 andhaving its top end engaged within a peripheral groove32 in said enlarged section 30 (see Fig. 2).
In order to provide a'close micrometer longi-v tudinal adjustment of the blade 18, the rear end of the jack screw is provided with an enlarged knurled finger knob 33, adjacent and below which is an annular drum 34, upon the periphery of which is inscribed a graduated'scale 35 having designating numerals 36. The top rounded surface of the lug 24 is provided with an index groove 3'7 by means of which the graduated drum 34 may be setto produce any desired predetermined depth of cut of the blade 18.
For the purpose of providingalateral adjustment of-the cutting blade 18, provision is made of a lever 38 embracing the reduced section 29 of said screw 26 and adapted to have a limited pivotal movement thereon. The lever 33 has an integral depending arm 39 adapted to engage in a central elongated longitudinal slot 40 in the blade 18, the upper end of said slot being in close proximity to the transverse slot 22. The upper end of the lever 38 is located above the clamping plate 20 and is formed into a winged finger gripping section 41 having knurled opposite faces 42 in convenient reach of the operators thumb and index finger without requiring him to remove his hand from the front handle 47 of the plane.
In order to lock the cutter blade in any desired longitudinal and lateral adjusted position, the clamping plate 20 is provided with a transverse rounded groove 43 partially fitting around a cross-shaft 44, the extremities of which are securely attached to the side walls 12 and 13, as by heading over the ends thereof.
Intermediate the groove 43 and the forward upright lug 23, the clamping plate 20 is provided with an inclined locking screw 45, the lower end of which is adapted to engage against the blade 18, while the upper end is provided with an integral knurled knob 46.
By means of this construction, it will be obvious that when the locking screw 45 is forced down upon the blade 18, the clamping plate 20 will be pressed upwardly around the cross-shaft 44 as a fulcrum, causing the nose 21 to press the blade 18 tightly against the triangular crossrib 19 and the rear rib 15. The body 10 is provided with the usual front handle knob 47 and a rear S-shaped gripping handle 48. The front knob 47 is securely attached to the upper surface of the bottom plate 11 by means of a screw bushing 49, which is threadedly engaged upon the upper end of a vertical threaded spindle 50, the
1 lower end of which is screwed into a raised boss 51 integral with said bottom plate 11.
The rear handle 48' is similarly attached to the plate 11 by means of a screw bushing 52, and a long inclined screw spindle 53 located within the handle 48, having threaded engagement at its lower end with a raised boss 54 at the rear end of said plate 11. The handle 48 is prevented from lateral rotation by means of a-small raised nib 55 located on the top surface of the plate 11,
1 said nib 55 having a tight fitting engagement in a countersunk hole 56 formed in the handle 48.
Operation In the operation of adjusting the cutting blade 18, the operator will first loosen the locking screw 45gwith his left hand, and then with his right hand manually rotate the knurled knob 33 of the jack screw 2'7 without relinquishing his grip on the handle 48. The blade 18 will be thus forced downwardly or upwardly to be desired longitudinal adjusted position with respect to the base plate 11, the exact position being determined by the micrometer scale on the'drum 34 and the indexing groove 3'7. The lateral adjustment of the blade may be effected by merely forcing the winged section 41 of the lateral adjustment lever 38 to the right or left of its central normal position, this operation being most easily performed by the left hand. When the blade 18 is properly adjusted both longitudinally and laterally, it may then be locked securely by screwing down on the locking screw 45 with the left hand.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the inventionincludes all the modifications and embodiments coming withinthe scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
1. In a woodworking plane, a base having a transverse slot, an inclined cutting blade adapted to project through said slot, a clamping plate for holding said blade, a locking screw in said clamping plate for forcing said blade against an edge of said slot, an inclined jack screw journaled in said plate, a threaded traveling block on said jack screw having cooperating engagement with said blade for longitudinal adjustment of the same, and a lateral adjusting lever pivoted on said jack screw and also having cooperative engagement with said blade.
2. In a woodworking plane, a base having a transverse slot, an inclined cutting blade adapted to project through said slot, a clamping plate for holding said plate, a locking screw in said clamping plate for forcing said blade against an edge of said slot, an inclined jack screw journaled in said plate, a threaded traveling block on said jack screw having cooperating engagement with said blade for longitudinal adjustment of the same, said jack screw having a micrometer head for closely and accurately determining the thickness of cut, and a lateral adjusting lever pivoted on the lower end of said jack screw and also having cooperative engagement with said blade.
3. In a carpenters plane, a base having a transverse slot, an inclined cutting blade projecting through said slot, a clamping plate for engaging said blade, means for pressing said clamping plate against said blade to lock it in adjusted position, a jack screwjournaled in said clamping plate, said blade having a pair of slots, a traveling tapped block on said jack screw having a depending section fitting in one of said slots, whereby said cutter blade may be longitudinally adjusted by the rotation of said jack screw, and a lever pivoted on said clamping plate and engaging the other slot for laterally adjusting said blade. 7
4. In a carpenters plane, a base having a transverse slot, an inclined cutting blade projecting through said slot, a clamping plate forengaging said blade and having a longitudinal slot, means for pressing said clamping plate against said lade to lock it in adjusted position, a jack screw journaled in said clamping plate, said blade having a pair of slots, a traveling tapped block on said jack screw having a depending section fitting in one of said slots, whereby said cutter blade may be longitudinally adjusted by the rotation of said jack screw, and a lever pivoted on said clamping plate and engaging the other slot for laterally adjusting said blade, said block and lever passing through the longitudinal slot in said clamping plate.
5. In a carpenters plane, a base having a transverse slot, an inclined cutting blade projecting through said slot, a clamping platev for engaging said blade, means for pressing said clamping plate against said blade to lock it in adjusted position, a jack screw journaled in said clamping plate, said blade having a longitudinal slot near its upper end, and a manually operated lever extending upwardly through said clamping plate and operatively connected to said cutting blade for laterally adjusting said blade. 7
6. In a carpenters plane, a base having a trans verse slot, an inclined cutting blade projecting through said slot, a clamping plate for engaging said blade, means for pressing said clamping plate against said blade to lock it in adjusted position, a jack screw journaled in said clamping plate, said blade having a longitudinal slot near its upper end in alinement with said jack screw, and a manually operated lever extending upwardly through said clamping plate and operatively connected to said cutting blade for laterally adjusting said blade.
7. In a carpenters plane, a base having a transverse slot, an inclined cutting blade projecting through said slot, a clamping plate for engaging said blade, means for pressing said clamping plate against said blade to lock it in adjusted position, a jack screw journaled in said clamping to project through said slot, a clamping'plate located above said blade, means connected with a said clamping plate for longitudinally adjusting said blade, a lever extending through said clamping plate and pivotally supported upon said means for laterally adjusting said blade by hand, and means connected with said clamping plate for locking said blade in adjusted position.
